Hey y’all, my sister-in-law is having a baby so I’m gonna be an auntie!! And we’re trying to think of names and we both kind of like the name Beca (not short for Rebecca, just Beca) and of you like it could you give us some middle names!! Thanks❤️❤️

I'm with the overwhelming majority - call the little one Rebecca and use the nick name you like when she is little and let her choose when she is adult. You can't give a baby a name that's going to give them problems throughout their life 'cos its kinda fun'. It's not fair on her.

Unless the OP's SiL is Welsh speaking (and I'm guessing that would have been mentioned by now if she was), then it doesn't make sense to use a name from a language which has it's own phonics. Lovely if you are Welsh speaking. Odd if you are not.

safetyfreak · 19/01/2019 16:07

Eh I do not like Beca, I am a Rebecca myself and it leaves it open to many nicknames and Becca (correct spelling!) Is one of them.

Like another poster said, if your getting over 100 replies arguing about a name then your onto an loser.

Friend's daughter is Rebeca and is always know as Beca. We are Welsh though. Her middle name is Haf which is Summer in Welsh.

Oh and Haf is pronounced Ha-v

Chloejean · 19/01/2019 16:50

@Shmoobarb I’m not picking it for her we’re all just helping her think of names, why do people think that’s so strange?

@BackforGood we’re from the United States but my grandpa is welsh

Stupid question alert - is the Welsh for summer, haf, because summer is half way through the year? Or am I just very ignorant (probably!)

Horsemad · 19/01/2019 17:23

I don't think so, 3out but happy to be corrected! 🙂

Horsemad · 19/01/2019 17:24

@Chloejean do you have children yourself?

Chloejean · 19/01/2019 17:26

@horsemad I have two daughters Adalie and Stella

Beca is not a name. As someone who grew up with a "unique" spelling of a normal name, I would plead with you to convince her not to give her child a daft name. It is awful constantly having to correct people and having to say, no it's not short for anything.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 19/01/2019 17:30

Probably not relevant in the US, but to me in the UK sounds like a make of washing machine.

chaoscategorised · 19/01/2019 17:39

The only Beca I know is Welsh, and it's not pronounced like Becca (BEKK-eh), it's pronounced 'Beh-cah' with almost like a pause between the two syllables?

MaisyPops · 19/01/2019 17:46

Nice enough name if you've got Welsh heritage and enough people will pronounce it.
If not then becca is a nice nickname but I don't see why you wouldn't just use the longer name (rebecca) and have becca as a common diminutive. Unless of course mum doesn't want a name that people will know properly.

If you're simply seeking for fun yoo-neeqk names then I feel for the poor child who will, whatever name gets chosen, probably have a lifetime of 'no it's not short for anything, yes that is a silent h, yes there are 2 ks in the middle, I know it's also a nickname, It's hyphenated, the 2nd syllable is pronounced differently' because the parent is more concerned with making their child a fashion accessory.

3out · 19/01/2019 18:50

Thanks @horsemad , thought it was perhaps too much of a coincidence right enough :)

jessstan2 · 20/01/2019 00:15

Dreadful name, never heard it before. As someone above said, it sounds like a washing machine. I've known people called Rebecca who have a nickname of 'Becca', with two Cs but not Beca.

whiteworld · 20/01/2019 00:21

Beca is not a name.

I called dd Rebecca. She prefers Becca. Which is a thing, not
Beca.

‘Kinda fun?’ You need to put a lot more thought into baby names. Fun does not matter. How the name will be seen by others matters more.

whiteworld · 20/01/2019 00:24

Chaos - Becca is pronounced Be-cca as well. Not beK-eh.

HolaHola · 20/01/2019 03:06

My friend's name is Becky. Not Rebecca, just Becky. She has spent her entire life correcting people when they refer to her as Rebecca and it drove her mad at secondary school when every single teacher did it

Roomba, do you know me??? Shock I don’t think there’s many of us out there

Mamimawr · 20/01/2019 08:00

Can people PLEASE stop saying that Beca isn'tt a name. It might not be an English name, but it is a name!

guineapig1 · 20/01/2019 08:15

I’m also in Wales where Beca is a perfectly normal and accepted name. I know several including more than one Beca Mai. (Incidentally Mai is often a middle name given to girls born in May in Wales). Nothing remotely odd about it.

The level of ignorance and rudeness towards names which are not immediately recognisable as English names is sometimes quite staggering!

peachypetite · 20/01/2019 08:16

You mean Becca?

A lifetime of botched coffee orders...

chaoscategorised · 20/01/2019 08:47

Ahhh interesting @whiteworld - in my accent I'd say Becca as identical to Becker, which means the Welsh name sounds totally different to me! I wish I could remember IPA notation...
