If you had a sweep, did it start labour?

I'm booked in for a sweep tomorrow ahead of being induced Sunday but I'm just wondering what percentage of ladies actually go into labour after a sweep..

No.

NorthernRunner · 15/01/2019 18:23

No, in fact I had two and nothing happened, so I was then induced.

SoyDora · 15/01/2019 18:23

I had three, and none of them did unfortunately.

Nope!

AintNobodyHereButUsReindeer · 15/01/2019 18:28

First baby I had a sweep which did, but the midiwfe said I was already 2-3cm dilated and cervix was very favourable so I probably would have gone into labour without a sweep tbh.

Second baby had 2, neither worked.

MegaClutterSlut · 15/01/2019 18:30

I had a sweep 2 days before I went labour but I also done other thing that's good for starting labour that morning too Blush

MegaClutterSlut · 15/01/2019 18:31

Not the same morning as the sweep, that would be Envy

Bigonesmallone3 · 15/01/2019 18:33

I had one on the Tuesday with the intention of being induced on the Saturday..
I lost my plug and had a feeling it may happen naturally but nope.
Still went for induction and baby still didn't come til Monday night

WeCameToDance · 15/01/2019 18:34

First baby sweep worked. I went into labour about 3 hours later but I dont know if that would have happened anyway regardless of the sweep.
Second it did not work. I was devastated. I thought that after the success of the first I would have the baby in a matter of hours.

KirstieandPhil · 15/01/2019 18:34

First one nope but I gave birth almost exactly 36 hours after the second. However, I was 2cm dilated and cervix was anterior. After the midwife did it she said I wouldn't need to be induced (mine was booked in 3 days later) - she was right Grin

winefortea · 15/01/2019 18:35

I've had 2 kids and had 2 or 3 sweeps with each, none of which had any effect on either child!

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 15/01/2019 18:35

No not effective and deeply unpleasant experience. If it is painful then don't be afraid to tell the midwife to stop which is what I wish I'd done!

Silkyanduna · 15/01/2019 18:36

Dd has a sweep at 12 she was born at 7.45 didn’t realise I was in labour till about 7. Thought my stomach cramps were just the side effect of the sweep Blush

Xmasbaby11 · 15/01/2019 18:36

I had 2.

No!

Incredibly painful too.

merrybloominchristmas · 15/01/2019 18:37

Yes
I was in full blown labour before I left the room. Most disconcerting. Ds was born 6 hours later.

StrawberrySoup · 15/01/2019 18:38

I had three, no effect so I ended up being induced in the end

beforeihit30 · 15/01/2019 18:38

Had a sweep with DC2 and nothing - got some slight cramping following but had to be induced the week after. They offered me a second sweep but at that point I was massive, and tired, and the hospital wasn’t very close, so I didn’t want to drag myself there again just for more cramps and no labour (I might have been feeling a touch miserable Grin).

I remember reading something along the lines of it being successful in 1/7 cases (or something like that).

2019StandingforWomen · 15/01/2019 18:38

Yes. 3 separate births. I had to beg for a sweep on my 3rd birth however. And when contractions slowed down I asked them to see how dilated I was and do a bit of a sweep whilst in there which Kickstarted it all again. I find them very effective and much better than being induced.

nancy75 · 15/01/2019 18:39

I had a sweep in the Wednesday morning & went in to labour on the Thursday morning, Don’t know if it worked or if Dd had finally (10 days late) decided to come out of her own accord!

AragonsGirl · 15/01/2019 18:39

First time they did nothing. Second pregnancy I had a sweep at 39 weeks at 2pm...baby born at 2am

Gunpowder · 15/01/2019 18:39

Yes! Contractions started 3 hours later. Although I also had reflexology so could have been that. And apparently I was 2-3cm when I had the sweep so it was clearly time.

HawkeyeInConfusion · 15/01/2019 18:46

No.

Verbena87 · 15/01/2019 18:48

3 sweeps, still needed induction but induction was way less stressful and difficult than I’d expected.

NoPhelange · 15/01/2019 18:49

No both times. However I had a second sweep with my second pregnancy in hospital as my contractions weren't progressing, shovel handed old gen midwife .. stood up and then they were every 3 minutes from every 10.

December2018 · 15/01/2019 18:55

I had a sweep at 1 and contractions started about 2 hours later and my waters broke at 10pm that night, but I was also 2cm dilated, it was very uncomfortable and I was 40+4, but I was more uncomfortable being pregnant to be honest so I would do it again
