If you had a sweep, did it start labour?

I'm booked in for a sweep tomorrow ahead of being induced Sunday but I'm just wondering what percentage of ladies actually go into labour after a sweep..

No and it flipping hurt.

I'm still pissed off that when I was in labour with dd2 the midwife did one without asking, she said she was just checking how dilated I was then when I burst until tears because she hurt me so much she said she'd done a sweep.

Meltedicicle · 15/01/2019 18:59

Yes, I had one with my second pregnancy. The midwife said she had a really high success rate (something like 90%) so I was glad as had the sweep on Thursday and went into labour that night. Would have been induction otherwise which was booked for the Monday.

NeonPink · 15/01/2019 19:00

Yes. Labour came on within a few hours and he was born the next day.

No and it really fucking hurt. Refused for second baby

sar302 · 15/01/2019 19:08

Yes, at 41 + 2. Was told it was unsuccessful. Went into labour 5 hours later whilst sulking about it in a restaurant with my husband. I was then in labour for 52 hours with a stick baby however, so although it kicked things off, it wasn't particularly helpful!

sar302 · 15/01/2019 19:09

*stuck! He definitely wasn't a sodding stick of a baby!

No, it did nothing.

December2018 · 15/01/2019 19:10

@sar302 52 hours!
Geez that sounds like such a rough time hun, my labour was 20 hours and that was enough!

Ribeebie · 15/01/2019 19:10

Yes! Contractions started 12 hours after my sweep at 40+3

HumpHumpWhale · 15/01/2019 19:23

First time the midwife did a sweep on a Friday, and said "there's no way you'll last the weekend, the baby's right there, I can feel his hair". It was mildly uncomfy but not painful. A WEEK later I was induced. Iwas so sick of being pregnant.
Second time, I think I went into labour the day after a sweep? But not sure. Maybe two. Only a week overdue that time.

DaisyDando · 15/01/2019 19:25

No, and I didn’t like the sweep. But then I didn’t like any of it. Except the baby, obvs.

BabyNameDilemma · 15/01/2019 19:28

Nope. Happened on its own a few days later. Don't think I'll bother next time.

Toughtips · 15/01/2019 19:51

First birth no. Second birth yes

3boysandabump · 15/01/2019 19:53

No I had 3 and still had to be induced

Jaxtellerswife · 15/01/2019 19:56

I've had five in total over two pregnancies. None worked. They supposedly only work if baby and body are ready anyway.

MrsJonesAndMe · 15/01/2019 20:03

You need to have 3 in 3 days before the induction date...that's what my hypno birth midwife suggested and she was right (in my case). DS was born the night before I was due to go in for induction... at 40+13

Blue25654 · 15/01/2019 20:09

It worked for me. Waters broke about 12hrs after sweep and born 3 hours after that Smile

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 15/01/2019 20:13

DC2, third sweep worked and went into labour while waiting for a bed for induction.

DC3 four sweeps nothing doing. Went in and they broke the waters and she was born three hours later.

PurplePotatoes · 15/01/2019 20:17

No not for me. I had 2 and the midwife couldn't believe nothing happened and I had to be induced at 40+12. I was already 1-2cm dilated and fully effaced when I had them too.

Fannyfanakerpants · 15/01/2019 20:18

Yes, but i was already 3cm and having mild contractions. I think if your not ready, it can do more harm than good and actually stall things.

magpie24 · 15/01/2019 20:20

I had three and none worked I'm afraid

FeelingFlat · 15/01/2019 20:25

No and I'd never have one again. Felt barbaric and intrusive

Lost5stone · 15/01/2019 20:25

Yes I think so! Could have been a coincidence as midwife said my body was very ready for Labour before but had the sleep 4pm Thursday and contractions started 7pm Friday. Lost plug first thing Friday morning

origamiwarrior · 15/01/2019 20:25

Yes, 1 weeek overdue, sweep at 3 pm, backache started at 7 pm, mild contractions started at midnight, painful contractions started at 8 am, hospital by 12 pm, baby born at midnight.

Definitely linked in my view.
