If you had a sweep, did it start labour?

I'm booked in for a sweep tomorrow ahead of being induced Sunday but I'm just wondering what percentage of ladies actually go into labour after a sweep..

No it didn't work and as PP's experience, the 3rd one was very unpleasant and I wouldn't have another if you paid me.

HugoBearsMummy · 15/01/2019 20:45

Nope had 3!!! Absolute crap. And very uncomfortable. Wouldn't want one in this pregnancy.

Yes, within hours at a week overdue. Was uncomfortable but not painful. Second child.

sirmione16 · 15/01/2019 20:51

Had one saturday, nothing. Had one this morning still nothing (obviously up to 48 hours before declare unsuccessful so here's hoping)

But neither have hurt! So please tell your midwife if it does, as it shouldn't! They've either not used enough lubricant or are being too rough.

LuckyAmy1986 · 15/01/2019 20:56

Yes both times

localfluff · 15/01/2019 20:56

No. It caused premature rupture of membranes and a failed induction which ended up as an emcs. Ds was born strep b positive and spent the next few days is scbu on iv antibiotics.

I don't agree with them being done. I think they can cause harm.

LuckyAmy1986 · 15/01/2019 20:56

Oh btw I didn’t find it painful

meow1989 · 15/01/2019 20:58

Yes. It was excruciating. Left having mild camps, drove home and went in 8 hours later 2cm dilated (apparently I am a wimp). Ended up in established labour another 7 hours later.

I actually never progressed past 4cm and needed emcs but nothing to do with sweep

mintich · 15/01/2019 21:07

Had 3 of none of them worked. I wouldn't have them again

Stompythedinosaur · 15/01/2019 21:17

My second one did.

PosiePerkinandPootle · 15/01/2019 21:20

I had one for DS 6 days past due date. Labour didn't start for another 3 days but when it did it was quick. No idea if the sweep helped or not. With DD2 I had a sweep at 7 days past and the midwife must've had about 40 years experience said after. Go home and have a hot bath, a hot curry and hot sex and you'll have that baby tonight. I was on the phone placing my takeaway order when I had my first contraction. I had the hot bath waiting for it to arrive, ate it and left for the hospital. Skipped the hot sexGrin

14allall41 · 15/01/2019 21:26

Yes, immediately....possibly because consultant accidentally broke my waters!

14allall41 · 15/01/2019 21:33

Just to add - it didn't hurt, was just a bit uncomfortable.

Millionsofthings · 15/01/2019 21:54

Oh gosh op!!

Sorry it’s not been the best response to soothe you!!

I had one with DC 1 I was a 38 weeks but they wanted to try and deliver early as it was a risky IVF pregnancy and although it was uncomfortable it worked!! I was in labour a few hours late and holding my baby that night!!

DC 2- Had a feeling this was more of a lazy baby as I never got a lot of movement during the pregnancy I had 3 sweeps over the space of the week and nothing seemed to be happening but then the night before I was due to go for induction baby arrived.

Both my labours were quick so perhaps the sweep had something to do with that?!

Just try to relax ( hard I know ) but no matter what it’s always worth it when you see DC ! :)

TheWeatherGirl1 · 15/01/2019 22:02

No

Azure83 · 15/01/2019 22:43

The third one did.. but I was 41+6 so who knows how if it wasn't just a coincidence.

rootsandbranches · 15/01/2019 23:04

No, and refused one with later pregnancy. In the bright side giving birth was a more pleasant experience.

Linwin · 15/01/2019 23:41

Nope and was excruciatingly painful to boot. I’m not sure why it wasn’t explained that it might hurt that much!

Melittlebee · 16/01/2019 11:51

Well after reading all these stories I hardly slept last night and was a bag of nerves this morning, I could have cried with fear sat in the waiting room!
Anyway, I've had my sweep and it was slightly uncomfortable but no way near what I was expecting.

Note to self - stop posting on forums!! Grin

I'm a bit late to the party, but had a sweep with both of my DC and went into labour within 24 hours both times - I was almost 2 weeks overdue with both, though, and due to be induced the next day, so it might have happened anyway.

vampirethriller · 16/01/2019 13:55

I had two, they didn't work but weren't at all painful.

trevthecat · 16/01/2019 14:03

Yes with all 3 of mine it worked. 3rd was over a week early too!

Slatkater · 16/01/2019 14:05

2, didn't work!

trevthecat · 16/01/2019 14:05

Also, it's uncomfortable but I didn't find it painful
