None 13 is young enough for a phone.

Lovemysofa · 14/01/2019 22:07

Don't have an answer but they are exactly the same ones I am pondering for my dd who is 11 soon, from tescos too.

GertrudeWilloughby · 14/01/2019 22:07

She's 10, why does she need an iPhone? Hmm

Girlwhowearsglasses · 14/01/2019 22:14

iPhone SE.
Smaller phone - size of iPhone 5 but with spec of iPhone 7 (Ish)
Much less likely to be smashed as smaller. iPhone 5 is a no. No - because not supported security wise any more- and lots of apps don’t work.

You can buy an ok one for less than £150 (make sure its unlocked ) and get a Gift Gaff goody bag for around £7 a month. This has around 2GB of date - more than enough.

Make sure you set it up with ‘screen time’ and set the age restrictions though: especially in-app purchases off

(Said from experience - I have 3 preteens.)

noblegiraffe · 14/01/2019 22:20

None. Or a brick phone if she needs a phone.

A tablet for youtube if she doesn’t.

missmouse101 · 14/01/2019 22:23

Really? No phone. She's TOO young.

kittenfun · 14/01/2019 22:29

She already uses mine !!
When I get new one don't want her using it

OP posts:
kittenfun · 14/01/2019 22:30

Looks like the 6s has a bigger screen

kittenfun · 14/01/2019 22:33

It doesn't have to be an iPhone my current one is an iPhone that she uses
I only really know about iPhones

Well you can explain to her that she can use a laptop to watch You Tube, but a phone is for when she is older!!

PhilomenaButterfly · 15/01/2019 08:19

Bog off somewhere, when your DC's walking home on their own is young enough for a phone, which for DS2 will be barely 10. Xmas Hmm

kittenfun · 15/01/2019 08:52

Going to go for a IPhone 6s she is nearly 10 10 on Saturday
Screen bigger than se
£17 a mnth

I’d personally do a brick phone and a tablet.

kittenfun · 15/01/2019 09:13

She isn't keen on tablets

OP posts:
PinkFizzz · 15/01/2019 09:17

I'd go 6s.

SE is a small phone with bigger models spec crammed in - from experience this tends to make them slow and clunky after a while.

A tablet is just a bigger version of a phone really, not sure why so many people have a problem with it.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 15/01/2019 09:27

YOu're setting yourself up for the expectation of always having a good phone. At 10 she needs it at most for texting or calling if she walks herself to school.

As for not being keen on a tablet what bollocks. An ipad is just an oversized iPhone so she'd be fine.

Rockbird · 15/01/2019 09:40

My just turned 11yo has had an iPhone SE for a year. It's just good enough for her because she has access to iPads but the screen is small.

IceRebel · 15/01/2019 09:51

I’d personally do a brick phone and a tablet.

Same. If she needs a phone because she's walking home alone etc then I understand why you'd like to buy one, but even so there's no need for it to be anything more than a cheap brick phone without internet access.

goldengummybear · 15/01/2019 09:54

A 10 year old might be going to secondary school in September so getting a basic iPhone now or before the autumn is not going to make much difference. My only advice is to get a good protective case. iPhones are very fragile without one.

RibenaMonsoon · 15/01/2019 09:54

Can't you just let her use your old one? Don't recycle it and you won't need to pay for a new one for her.

EhlanaOfElenia · 15/01/2019 10:09

I agree with letting her use your old one. What you will get money wise and what you have to pay won't match up.

Get a sim only contract, which doesn't allow them to go over their limits, I think BT has a one at a good price if you have BT broadband at home, or something like giff gaff.

beckyh2502 · 15/01/2019 10:16

Why don't you just keep your old phone for her instead of recycling it & either get her a cheap sim only contract or get her on pay as you go (Giff Gaff is the best!). That way, she gets the keep playing on the phone she already knows, you know how to use it so can set up controls etc & you don't have to spend any money on a new one!

Girlwhowearsglasses · 15/01/2019 10:20

A bigger screen = easier to break
Also said from bitter experience

Getting a really really good case with a place for a lanyard is essential.

If in Year six now is the time for a phone - because they do need to start to be able to go out for short periods on their own. The whole world suddenly expects them to make their way to school via public transport at the beginning of year seven. Not that I agree with that or that it’s easy....

potatoscone · 15/01/2019 10:24

It makes no sense to recycle your old phone and buy her a new one. Just give her that!
