Who would you vote for in a General Election?

If there was a GE tomorrow, which political party would you vote for?

Personally I would vote Labour as I want to see an end to austerity, more money invested in public services and less inequality.

Labour

Beerflavourednipples · 13/01/2019 22:50

There is just no way I can vote for Labour with Corbyn and his lot in.

At least the Conservatives are quite open about the fact that they don't really give a fuck about you.

localfluff · 13/01/2019 22:52

There is nobody to vote for.

I’ve worked in elections for 23 years (including election nights) so I can tell you no candidate or anyone else reads or gives 2 hours about spoiled papers. You’d just be wasting your time.

How many are there normally?

WineCheeseSleep · 13/01/2019 22:56

Labour but I've never felt more negative about them. My values align the most with them though so I'd still vote for them over Conservatives.

Hen2018 · 13/01/2019 22:56

@giantkitten I think there are 20 tables of counters and at my table we’ve never had more than 10 spoiled papers.

Very occasionally, we might wonder if someone meant say Cons or Labour (if there was a scribble) and then the supervisor has a look.

Then they’re dumped in a wire tray and literally NO ONE looks at them. The candidates and bystanders can’t touch the papers by law so they literally couldn’t read them if they wanted to.

And they don’t want to! They’re talking to their teams, double checking stuff, being interviewed by the press etc.

carinamel · 13/01/2019 22:57

Probably just an independent candidate who puts local policies first.

Hen2018 · 13/01/2019 22:58

After the election the papers are bagged and sealed and stored for however many years, just in case of electoral fraud.

Voting isn’t anonymous, by the way...

mirren3 · 13/01/2019 22:58

SNP, female living in Scotland. AND I have voted for independence and always will.

MamaLovesMango · 13/01/2019 22:59

I’d also spoil my ballot

Hen2018 · 13/01/2019 23:00

I’m going to get RSI with all these spoiled ballot papers.

GiantKitten · 13/01/2019 23:02

@Hen2018

Thanks, that's very interesting. I was under the impression that the parties would have sight of spoiled papers.

I wonder though, if there was a sudden massive increase in the number, if someone official might take more of an interest?

linkinperk · 13/01/2019 23:03

I used to be Labour but I think Corbyn has fucked that over with all the anti Semitic stuff and basically having no backbone.

I'd vote for whoever offered a second referendum at this point (Lib Dem) but if no one does then they can all jog on.

This whole country is a laughing stock.

MamaLovesMango · 13/01/2019 23:04

Well @Hen2018, maybe if there was enough to cause RSI, somebody might take notice.

I don’t wish RSI on you though Smile

Hen2018 · 13/01/2019 23:04

@GiantKitten - well, I suppose that would be a possibility but you’d have to have a few dozen in each box before anyone noticed. Still it would only be election staff and they’re not the people you’re trying to deliver a message to.

You’d be better off with a letter writing or other sort of campaign.

AngeloMysterioso · 13/01/2019 23:05

Spoiled vote. I’m politically homeless atm anyway and hell would freeze over before I’d vote Tory, but I’m in one of the safest Tory seats in the country so my vote isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

londonmummy2 · 13/01/2019 23:06

Spoil my ballot. I'm politically homeless.

Lifelong Tory supporter but can't stand them now. No alternative.

Hen2018 · 13/01/2019 23:06

You can look online (district councils) for all the previous election results and see how many ballot papers were spoiled.

HamletMouse · 13/01/2019 23:07

Lib Dem, because I actually like what our Lib Dem MP is doing in our local area.

Normally a Labour voter and am a member of the party, but really struggling to align myself with them right now with Corbyn at the helm.

Would never ever consider voting Tory.

MamaHechtick · 13/01/2019 23:07

I'm a woman, disabled and Jewish. So I wouldn't vote for anyone right now.

MsLucyLastic · 13/01/2019 23:37

What do people honestly think the outcome of lots of spoiled ballots would be?

Not one party would care. A spoilt ballot doesn't tell anyone WHY the ballot has been spoiled.

If no party is willing to see women as adult human females, then that means they are all the same. Not voting won't make them change their minds. But voting in someone who you think may possess critical thinking skills, and who you think may be open to reading gender critical letters from their constituents, prior to a vote on the matter, MAY help the cause.

As all the parties are a shower of shit, and I can't stand Corbyn or May, I plan to vote on wider policies and those whose backbench MPs give me most hope for the future. So Labour. Leaders can change quickly, so I fail to see the point in voting for personalities.

Sometimes, least worst is better than nothing.

These are the figures from my constituency last time. Tell me where my vote is going to help the cause.

Conservative: 25,404 48.6%
Labour: 11,798 22.6%
UKIP: 8,250 15.8%
Liberal Democrat: 2,756 5.3%
Green: 2,193 4.2%
Independent: 1,498 2.9%

blueangel1 · 13/01/2019 23:48

Labour. I'm live in a safe seat, but if I was elsewhere I would be quite happy to vote for the Lib Dems to keep the Tories out.

GiantKitten · 13/01/2019 23:48

Oops, sorry, that was 2015 (hence UKIP!)

This was 2017:

Conservative 31,919 57.8
Labour 18,720 33.9
Liberal Democrat 3,247 5.9
Green 1,314 2.4

Still no chance Hmm

Believability · 13/01/2019 23:52

I have no idea. Life long labour voter but as a British Jew I’m not exactly feeling the love.
