Who would you vote for in a General Election?

If there was a GE tomorrow, which political party would you vote for?

Personally I would vote Labour as I want to see an end to austerity, more money invested in public services and less inequality.

Conservative. The thought of Corbyn as PM fills me with dread.

incywincybitofa · 16/01/2019 02:15

There is enough of a spread in the Tory party for many voters, but few people find it palatable to say it is it is cuurently broader than the Labour party. Tony Blair has spent a small fortune on Brexit rightly or wrongly, but I would vote against remain just so he didn't get his nasty way.
Nick Clegg let all of us down by betraying his voters because we all lost a party that could help toe a more central line.
I do believe that this next 5 yeaars will see an erruption of change in poltical parties. Tories are a changing and so is the Labour party. Lib Dems are a phoenix in the ashes.
We need to give the parties new policies represented by new names. From ashes we can have hope and a new start

bellinisurge · 16/01/2019 05:44

Corbyn as leader will unite the Tories and stragglers to defeat a vote of no confidence.
Interesting discussion with my 11 year old last night watching the vote." But mum, you'd have to pick Labour or Tory if there was a general election. Realistically it has to be one of them". I would only hold my nose and vote for either of them if they had a Revoke or Remain platform. I have never voted Tory and I despise Corbyn.

I'd go a step further and say we need new parties too. There's too much negative history in all 3 major parties (both Labour and Tory are hopelessly split on Europe and have been for decades) and too many voters who are set in their ways and habitually vote the same way (as their parents/grandparents) regardless of the manifestos. New political parties would make people sit up and take notice.

Deadsouls · 16/01/2019 08:10

Labour or Liberal (not decided)

Kazzyhoward · 16/01/2019 08:11

We use STV in NI for a variety of reasons but fairness is a key reason.

But the UK people rejected the STV option, so that's off the table.

2019StandingforWomen · 16/01/2019 08:12

I think I would spoil my vote and state that I am an adult human female

swimmerforlife · 16/01/2019 08:22

Labour member since I was 19.

First time in my life I would not be able to vote Labour, absolutely cannot stand the tories and do not align myself with the right.

So I would probably vote Lib Dems. Its the best out of a bad bunch.

Moussemoose · 16/01/2019 08:41

Kazzyhoward we voted on AV not STV.

When AV was rejected we didn't have the massive feeling of disenfranchisement and anger. Apathy was the problem.

How many people have been on Brexit threads saying their voice is not heard, and they are right. Perhaps they will realise we need a system that allows people to express their views in a GE so we don't need referenda.

Although, just at the moment my feelings about the level of political thought being engaged in by the British public is not positive.

Sarcelle · 16/01/2019 08:44

I asked my DH, and he like me would probably not vote. We genuinely don't understand what the Lib Dem's have been doing the last few years. They should be targeting all the people who have lost their natural home.

Bodicea · 16/01/2019 09:16

Lib Dem probably, but I live in a Tory strong hold area so would be a waste of time.

RedDwarves · 16/01/2019 09:31

Australian here, but also left with (essentially) two completely shit choices.

I have always voted Conservative, but I will not be voting at our election in May. I will turn up, because it's compulsory, but I will not vote for Liberal/Labor/Greens until they get their shit sorted out.

Kazzyhoward · 16/01/2019 09:57

Perhaps they will realise we need a system that allows people to express their views in a GE so we don't need referenda.

None of the 3 major parties were promising Brexit as part of their manifesto, so whatever voting system wouldn't have avoided the Brexit referendum that none of the main political parties were offering.

Kazzyhoward · 16/01/2019 10:00

We genuinely don't understand what the Lib Dem's have been doing the last few years.

They're leaderless. Vince Cable is far too lightweight and hasn't really much going for him as a leader. His claim to fame is his supposed brilliance in anticipating the crash, but millions of "ordinary" people were expecting an end to Brown's illusionary boom based on debt - it was just common sense it would come to and end. It was only the so-called "experts" in government and media that believed Brown's lies that he'd abolished boom and bust. Cable was lucky being in the right place at the right time saying the right things. In the coalition, he was a disaster and now as party leader, he's a disaster. Libdems won't progress until they get a new, able, charismatic leader and it will take a generation before Clegg's sell-out is forgiven/forgotten.

Moussemoose · 16/01/2019 10:12

If we had a different voting system we would in all probability have more parties.

Labour and the Tories are both two parties bound by the need for power.

PR systems allow for more nuance so people can express their views with clear distinctions.

Kazzyhoward · 16/01/2019 10:38

If we had a different voting system we would in all probability have more parties.

And more risk of needing coalition governments. After the Tory/Libdem coalition fiasco, no thanks.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 16/01/2019 11:15

I have always voted Labour but I will not vote for them until they oppose Brexit. So Lib Dem probably, as a protest against extreme populists.

PestymcPestFace · 16/01/2019 11:25

Check out how the Danish Parliament works.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folketing

We need total Parliamentary reform. Also to move out of London, love the idea of Stoke.

Stompythedinosaur · 16/01/2019 12:49

Either the Greens or Labour. I hate the Tories.

IrmaFayLear · 16/01/2019 13:01

Dh and I are fleeing the country (to anywhere!) if Corbyn got in - and we're certainly not rich - just average.

His bunch of arsehole followers (or puppeteers) would make life a misery for any decent working person - actually any person. Their economic policy would plunge Britain into recession. Companies have contingency plans in place to leave the UK should a Labour government get in. Land value taxes would cripple any homeowner in some areas (predicted £12K/annum for my small 1980s box), no matter how large their mortgage or small their salary.

Looking at Corbyn on tv last night calling for a vote of no confidence... he is a malicious odious toad.

FinnegansWhiskers · 16/01/2019 13:23

Quite! Can we throw the words obnoxious, egotistical, clueless and abhorrent in there as well?

NopSlide · 16/01/2019 13:26

Thing I'd have to write in "None of the Above" this time. Literally nothing I can put my cross beside on offer at the moment.

Honestly it's their penchant for dirty tricks in elections more than any perceived wishy washiness that puts me off the Lib Dems.

icannotremember · 16/01/2019 16:16

@IrmaFayLear £12k predicted by who? Labour has committed to looking at a Land Value Tax- not to introducing it. They certainly haven't got to the stage of telling you how that would be calculated or how they would assess the payment required of someone with a low income but whose LV was high.

His bunch of arsehole followers (or puppeteers) would make life a misery for any decent working person - actually any person.

Ah yes, because life is currently absolutely wonderful for the lower paid in our society. There is no poverty, no misery, no homelessness, no reliance on food banks, no one dying of an illness or condition deemed not serious enough to warrant benefits...

I can't take this stuff seriously when you can't even be bothered to use actual facts and are happy to declare that under Labour, there will definitely be a LVT system that will cripple homeowners in expensive areas and that no heed will be paid to their incomes. If you want to feel the country, go ahead, but perhaps before you take such drastic action you should make sure that what you think you know is actually true.
