I’m talking the ridiculous ones, so not meaning to offend anyone. If you remember the story how you heard it please include that too!

Mine Grin
When I was in hospital after my c section 6 weeks ago, lady across from me was talking to a nurse. The conversation went like this-

Nurse “he’s gorgeous! Does he have a name?”
Lady “yeh he’s legend king, after my dad”
Nurse “ooh....lovely!”
Lady “yeah named him after my dad as my dad died yesterday, same day e was born”
Nurse “oh I’m so sorry!”
Lady “it’s alright happened years ago, he was stabbed never liked the bastard serves him right!”
Nurse “okay! Right you can have these pain killers...”

😂😂 know I shouldn’t laugh but me and my mum told everyone at Christmas.

Names and stories please!

Used to go to school with someone called Joanne King, and she shortened her name to Jo, so she was Jo King!

ShadyLady53 · 10/01/2019 10:51

Oh goodness SO many...I worked with children for 15 years. The ones with the ridiculous names where always the worst behaved too so you had to say them a lot! All of these children are white British btw.

Miami
Rock
Montana
Leeland
Destinee
Liberty
Wednesday
Pheobe (not Phoebe)
A girl called Jon (pronounced John)
Oceana
Lemonie
Melohnie (Mel-OH-nee)
Auburn
Hunny, Cherri and Currie (sisters)
Luvanna (cos luv innit?)
Jamsin ( not Jasmine)

There’s probably loads I’ve left off but I’ve got a headache just remembering it all...

My DP once told me he heard a man calling his son, he shouted 'Harry Monk come here now'

As usual these threads bring out ignorance and casual racism. Believe or not but the world is not white, Christian and English. Instead of sneering why not learn from other cultures? When people say an unusual name why not admit you have never heard of it and ask does it have a special meaning? My children’s names are non English. One means loving and the other geyser - which makes sense as a geyser is a force of nature and he survived an illness which kills most babies.

Cinnamon

ShadyLady53 · 10/01/2019 10:58

Also went to school with more than one Holly Wood, knew a Robert Roberts and a girl called Tabitha Twitchet which always sounded like a Beatrix Potter character to me.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/01/2019 10:58

It's a shame but these stupid foreigners with their dumb names get everywhere these days
I think you need to check whether the pp knows the family heritage before accusing her of racism. Presumably she'd be less likely to comment on the name of the family were actually Greek rather than Marvel / DC fans.

thegardenfairy · 10/01/2019 11:07

Idris is a well used Welsh name, we have several in our family over the generations

Yes I know Idris is a Welsh name. I'm Welsh and also have several Idrises within the family.
All over 60. I was a bit 🤔 when neighbour named her new baby Idris. It's not a name I would have thought a baby would be called these days. Parents are not Welsh so not as if baby had been named after a great grandparent. I know baby's grandparents. Neither are Idris. Maybe it is going to become as popular as George soon 🤷‍♀️

U2HasTheEdge · 10/01/2019 11:08

I love Bluebell. I know someone with a Bluebell, shortened to Blue. I would have liked to use it myself.

AhoyDelBoy · 10/01/2019 11:08

Loxley. I think it’s awful.

WhyDidIEatThat · 10/01/2019 11:15

I have an ancestor called Loxley, born 1899 in the Bahama islands - I thought it was quite a nice name!

DaphneCanDoBetterThanFred · 10/01/2019 11:15

Bora8 that Romanian/Female story is absolute bullshit. Romanian names can be very similar to British names anyway, and from what I’ve heard from Romanian friends, Romanian schools teach English (like English schools teach French etc). Plus, if people have the ability to say “we see signs for it everywhere we go though” then they obviously have the ability to understand basic words like “male” and “female”. Try engaging your brain before letting xenophobic bullshit fall out, there’s a love.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/01/2019 11:16

I really like Loxley

thegardenfairy · 10/01/2019 11:19

There are lots of Robert Roberts in Wales. Plus David Davies, Thomas Thomas, Jenkins Jenkins, William Williams, James James...

I love Tabitha Twitchet 😁

2019yet · 10/01/2019 11:20

Worst ones I've heard have been very white middle England.

Boo Boo

  • yes seriously for a girl

Jezabelle - is by the far the worst I have ever heard. The child will be an adult now, but hearing it being screamed across the playground back then was just Shock

LuluJakey1 · 10/01/2019 11:20

Beau is pronounced 'Bow'
However, Beaulieu is pronounced ' in England.

Nothisispatrick · 10/01/2019 11:22

Aoiffe is a silly name. Imagine your whole life trying to correct people, and it doesn't even sound nice. Siobhan doesn't look much but is a great sounding name.....

It’s Aoife not Aoiffe, and let’s not start slagging off Irish names

ShadyLady53 · 10/01/2019 11:31

I think Aoife is a gorgeous name.

Noloudnoises · 10/01/2019 11:31

howtobehuman · 10/01/2019 11:35
