I’m talking the ridiculous ones, so not meaning to offend anyone. If you remember the story how you heard it please include that too!

Mine Grin
When I was in hospital after my c section 6 weeks ago, lady across from me was talking to a nurse. The conversation went like this-

Nurse “he’s gorgeous! Does he have a name?”
Lady “yeh he’s legend king, after my dad”
Nurse “ooh....lovely!”
Lady “yeah named him after my dad as my dad died yesterday, same day e was born”
Nurse “oh I’m so sorry!”
Lady “it’s alright happened years ago, he was stabbed never liked the bastard serves him right!”
Nurse “okay! Right you can have these pain killers...”

😂😂 know I shouldn’t laugh but me and my mum told everyone at Christmas.

Names and stories please!

The lengths some people go to make themselves feel big.

I was on holiday in Mexico and we went to a cenote (natural swimming hole) and there was an American family with 3 kids, Honour, brave and journey. Brave went up to the high point that you can jump off into the water and the mum and dad were shouting c'mon Brave you can do it! I guess he kinda had to with that name bless him (he was only about 8)

I would have guessed Amyleah to be pronounced Amy-lee

That's exactly what I thought when the mum spelled it for me. Nope...Amyleah, pronounced Amelia... Confused

chilledteacher · 10/01/2019 13:29

Oceana- which would have been fine if her surname wasn't Blue. Raised a few eyebrows in the waiting room at the doctors Grin

thegardenfairy · 10/01/2019 13:29

If there was a hyphen between Amy and Leah it would be Amy-Leah pronounced as spelled, surely?? 🤔

DameSquashalot · 10/01/2019 13:33

I love Tabitha Twitchet

MrsHares17 · 10/01/2019 13:34

My friends 80 year old Gran was called Denver.

Another friend has a Lilac-Poppy.
Do lilac poppies even exist?! Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 10/01/2019 13:34

Irish girls names always look so pretty but I can never remember how to pronounce them.
Anyone want to give me a lesson on "Aoife and Caoimhe"?

DameSquashalot · 10/01/2019 13:35

Aoife sounds lovely. Especially when Irish people say it.

Nothisispatrick · 10/01/2019 13:36

Aoife is pronounced ee-fa, like Eva with an f.

Caoimhe is Keeva

caperplips · 10/01/2019 13:41

Aoife is EEfa
Caoimhe is Queeva def not Keeva where i come from!

RedLife · 10/01/2019 13:43

Whyislarryhappy · 10/01/2019 13:46

Knew a woman called her son rhyno.
I taught a girl called Mabel, (which is fine) but her middle name is sunshine! Confused
Knew a family once upon a time, their daughters were called Dakota, Callie and Parris. Their sons were called Milan and Rio... Confused the parents had normal names, and their dog was Dave!
Dp is adamant where he lived as a child, twin girls were called Pepzi and fayenta (Pepsi and fanta)

Dowser · 10/01/2019 13:47

Sisters olive and Agnes

NoughtDegreesNought · 10/01/2019 13:48

Eric, Benedict and Hugo are all pretty standard, surely? You might not like them especially, but they're hardly ridiculous.

Also, Roman is a very common name in central and eastern Europe.

Beerflavourednipples · 10/01/2019 13:49

Caoimhe can be Queeva or Keeva. I know both! I prefer Keeva I have to say.

I'm hearing of more and more Caoimhes now in both Ireland and England.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/01/2019 13:53

Caoimhe is pretty. Aoife doesn't work great with a Brummy accent but then it was never meant to.

I quite like place name names like Dakota but at least spell it correct so Paris not Parris. Let keen on animals, so Rhyno is a no for many reasons.

I think you need to think how quickly you can think of mean things about a name and if it's less than?30 seconds then I. So the farty kid called Breaze or the fat kid called Rhyno. Its hardly making life more fun for them is it?

NoughtDegreesNought · 10/01/2019 13:58

Milan is a Slavic name, another that's very common in central and eastern Europe - nothing to do with the Italian city. It's also the German word for a kite (the bird of prey, not the flying toy).

Though fair enough Whyislarryhappy, in that company I might have my doubts too.

ShadyLady53 · 10/01/2019 14:03

The Caoimhes I’ve met in England have all been Keefuh’s.

In the ROI I’ve heard Queeva and Quayva dependent on the county.

My friend’s a Gaelic teacher from the South-West of ROI so I’ll ask her which is right or if they are all right.

Shockers · 10/01/2019 14:05

OP, I was so out of it after having DS1, I told the physio that his name was Parsley (the name of our cat).

They both had black hair/fur.

I remember knowing that it wasn’t his name, and registering her shock, but I couldn’t correct myself.

FranKatzenjammer · 10/01/2019 14:05

'Smamfa' (mentioned upthread) is the worst misspelling I have ever seen on any of these threads- truly appalling!

dannydyerismydad · 10/01/2019 14:06

There was a lady in the waiting room in the antenatal clinic with me. Her precious children were Levi and Denim. Neither terrible in isolation, but definitely themed together.

I'm sad that I didn't see her postnatally. I'm keen to know what baby 3 was called and if they followed the theme.

dannydyerismydad · 10/01/2019 14:06

Precious? They probably were to her.

I meant previous though.
