What the actual fuck IS this *pics included*

Recieved a casserole dish type thing from South African family members for Christmas. It looked like it was in original packaging, so it wasn't until today when I was putting away all our Christmas stuff that I opened it properly.

Inside was 2 packets of biltong, a net to cover your sugar dish, and this insane contraption.

What on earth is it, and what do I do with it?!

@Lomondstripe - it's very spiky - it would rip the leather/pleather to shreds!

Ooh, I saw something like this in a shop recently. I had no idea what it was, DP said it was probably for resting hot pans on.

I was so sure I was going to get a load of replies with certain uses of this thing...!

It's not flat, @bluepepper so you couldn't rest pans on it. It also has a clamp bit which wouldnt make sense for pan resting! What kind of shop did you see it in?!

Some kind of nutcracker?! Does the metal loosen the clamp part so you can put a nut in? And then screw it back up again to crack nut? Confused
