Recieved a casserole dish type thing from South African family members for Christmas. It looked like it was in original packaging, so it wasn't until today when I was putting away all our Christmas stuff that I opened it properly.

Inside was 2 packets of biltong, a net to cover your sugar dish, and this insane contraption.

What on earth is it, and what do I do with it?!

Just ask them what they think it is, and then ask Why?
Are they vegan?
Cos I'm dairy free as of now. And I love cheese.

dudsville · 05/01/2019 21:17

Crap. I wish i hadn't place marked for this!

Joinourclub · 05/01/2019 21:20

Member341379 oh bugger. I think I might try to 'go vegan' maybe 2 days a week? I'm already veggie but I eat a lot of dairy. But I just try not to think about the calves :(

Joinourclub · 05/01/2019 21:22

MrsTommyBanks are you dairy free because of this thread? I really think I can't morally continue to consume dairy but I'm going to find that so hard. There really is no substitute for cheese.

BluePepper · 05/01/2019 21:24

It’s maybe slightly possible that I didn’t see the exact same thing in Sainsbury’s.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 05/01/2019 21:24

I would phone the giver of said items and ask that person what it is used for. Do let us know.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 05/01/2019 21:25

They're your friends! Just ask!

If any of my friends gave me a random item which looked like a torture device, i'd be asking and we'd all have a joke. I can't think of any friends who i'd feel I couldn't approach with a "wtf is this thing... hahahah".

Just ask them why!

Flossmequick · 05/01/2019 21:25

Why are they seen in supermarkets though?

Flossmequick · 05/01/2019 21:26

Shit sorry Pepper!

No one said it guv.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 05/01/2019 21:26

@BluePepper

It's libel when it's in print. Slander is verbal.

babysharkah · 05/01/2019 21:26

Aside from the obvious hideousness if it why on earth have they given it to you op?!

Flossmequick · 05/01/2019 21:28

Oat milk
Soya milk
Almond milk
Hemp milk
Cashew milk

AP08 · 05/01/2019 21:28

Calf weaner

BluePepper · 05/01/2019 21:30

Ok.

Better? Am I safe from Sainsbury’s legal team?

MrsTommyBanks · 05/01/2019 21:30

@Joinourclub yes because of this thread.

macaroniandpizza · 05/01/2019 21:31

That sounds pretty horrle for the calf wearing that thing :(

NickMyLipple · 05/01/2019 21:31

It's my aunt and uncle who gave it to me - I will ask them tomorrow what they think it is, and depending on the response, ask them why they've given it to me Confused

MrsTommyBanks · 05/01/2019 21:31

I will find it incredibly hard tbf

RLOU30 · 05/01/2019 21:32

I wish I didn’t click on this now Sad how fucking sad

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/01/2019 21:33

I thought it was something you clamp onto a fence to stop the pesky foxes and cats walking along them , but the calf weaning devices......Holy Feck Shock

RLOU30 · 05/01/2019 21:33

“- Leave the weaners in the calves for 4-7 days, then separate the calves from their mothers at the time of removing the weaners”

Sad
BettaSplenden · 05/01/2019 21:33

Can't wait to see what they think it is or why they gave it you x

NickMyLipple · 05/01/2019 21:34

@MrsTommyBanks (and anyone else) I really didn't intend to cause upset or offence - I had no idea at all what this was and I'm genuinely confused as to why I've been gifted it!

Gotta be honest I've been to a fair few cattle farms over the years and I don't recall seeing these in use although that is indeed what they're for...making whatever the calf is trying to suckle move away from the pointy bits. However most calves are either away from adult cows and on milk from buckets, or left on their mothers (especially for beef). I know they sometimes try to suck each others' noses when they're first weaned which obviously isn't good for them but I've never met a calf in real life wearing one, that may be because all the farms I've been to leave the milk feeders in 24/7 so the calves just suck them?
