Recieved a casserole dish type thing from South African family members for Christmas. It looked like it was in original packaging, so it wasn't until today when I was putting away all our Christmas stuff that I opened it properly.

Inside was 2 packets of biltong, a net to cover your sugar dish, and this insane contraption.

What on earth is it, and what do I do with it?!

We used to live next door to a dairy farm. I’ve never seen one of these.

NameChanger22 · 05/01/2019 22:12

Oat milk is the best milk money can buy. There is no way I will ever drink cows' milk again.

Bunnybigears · 05/01/2019 22:13

Juells because if they knew what really went on this pretty harmless bit of rubber wouldnt be shocking or put them off dairy.

JeezYouLoon · 05/01/2019 22:14

I grew up on a farm and have been around beef and diary farms all my life and I've never ever come across such a hideous contraption.

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 05/01/2019 22:14

Good grief, why on earth would a calf weaning device come included with a casserole dish? Confused

mobyduck · 05/01/2019 22:14

nomfup44- is right! It is to stop calves weaning, an anti -lactation device farmers use. Are you a cattle farmer?

JeezYouLoon · 05/01/2019 22:15

I grew up on a farm and have been around beef and diary farms all my life and have never come across such a hideous contraption.

HildaZelda · 05/01/2019 22:15

@EffYouSeeKaye, thank you! I grew up on a dairy farm and reading this thread I honestly thought "WTF?" when someone said that male calves are slaughtered straight away!

This is why people jump on the vegan bandwagon sighting 'cruelty' when in all honestly they haven't got a blood clue and just believe all the scaremongering shit they read online.

DH has a cousin like this, born and brought up in a city and hasn't got a clue what actually happens on a farm, yet her FB feed is full of mis-information and drama queen attention seeking posts day after day.

People really need to educate themselves.

Frankenterfer · 05/01/2019 22:16

Well I'm vegan and have been for years, I've not seen these things before but seems just another thing to make a miserable existence a bit more miserable.

For those interested in going dairy free, my vote is for oat milk.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 05/01/2019 22:16

I have one of those, in a different style. It's part of my husband's Collection Of Random Crap, along with old metal syringes, cauldrons and agricultural gadgets of various types. He never used it though, it wasn't common even when he started farming (late 60's) and is virtually unheard of now, at least where we live.

Heyha · 05/01/2019 22:17

Anyone worried about the dairy industry, and genuinely interested should go and visit a dairy farm on Open Farm Sunday in June and see for themselves.

RobinHobb · 05/01/2019 22:20

NameChanger22 · 05/01/2019 22:21

HildaZelda - the vegan bandwagon is really good bandwagon to be on. I'm vegan for ecological reasons first and foremost. I also think cows are beautiful, kind creatures who don't deserve to be treated badly.

Frankenterfer · 05/01/2019 22:21

Male calves may not be slaughtered right away but my understanding is that they are removed fairly swiftly from their mothers. Who are inseminated again and kept in that cycle for their useful life to keep them lactating and then they too are slaughtered.

It doesn't really matter what farming practices are actually like when you believe that there is no humane way to kill something that does not want to die.

KarmaWhore · 05/01/2019 22:21

I thought this thread was funny until I saw that pic lol f the calf poor thing. The dairy industry is the cruellest if all. I cut out dairy and use coconut milk in my coffee and I really can't tell the difference it's lovely x

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/01/2019 22:22

Male chicks are dispatched at one day old , there are Chicken Sexers who sit picking up tiny yellow chickens , throwing the males into large containers where they basically suffocate .
They are used for food (pets/snakes)

I don't think anyone would put that on their Wish List at their schools Careers Open Day Sad

EffYouSeeKaye · 05/01/2019 22:23

Well, I’ll say it again. We have 300+ cows and calves. None are slaughtered at birth. Never used one of those devices on a calf, absolutely no ‘portholes’ (WTF!) Just cows, calves, a few bulls, chickens, rabbits, badgers, foxes, owls, a rook of mice and goodness knows what else, all living in the fresh air together.

By all means be vegan, but don’t believe what you read on the internet. Go and visit a farm. Then decide for yourself.

They are on Amazon (that exact one) £10.40. What hideous thing, and what a completely bizarre gift. They can't have bought it accidentally because it's a kind of specialist thing - not something you;d find in some kind of knick knack store and think was something else. They must be trying to make some sort of weird joke about your baby being weaning age or something. Are they usually mad ? (I mean a sugar net is an unusual gift also)

Catsize · 05/01/2019 22:24

Did you talk to them OP? 🤔

RebeccaCloud9 · 05/01/2019 22:27

I'm desperate to know what their reasoning is behind the gift!

Maybe they know your dd is weaning and just googled weaning and this came up? Thinking it was something like a teething ring maybe or any one of the numerous unnecessary pieces of kit like those fruit nets for babies?

BumbleyBum · 05/01/2019 22:28

What is it op? Did you ask?

Yousignup · 05/01/2019 22:30

Something from an episode of Luther????

Loulzze · 05/01/2019 22:31

If that's all it takes to convince people to be vegan I suggest you actually look into farming practices.. You'll be horrified 😂 jfc
