Do you spread Margerine or butter onto the toast before melting the cheese on it?
I do, apparently this is wrong.

I do.

Not sure how people think that the cheese would slide off-it doesn't create an oil slick!

Who has been telling you that it's wrong, Op?

Definately agree that butter is the primer, goes on first then everything else just slides on nicely.
If only margarine was available my toast would go naked

morningconstitutional2017 · 03/01/2019 13:44

Yes, you can never have enough butter.

Absolutely yes. It's UDDERly delicious. Grin

bellinisurge · 03/01/2019 14:45

I do. Lightly toast the bread in a toaster. Then a thin layer of butter. Then cheese. Under the grill. Bubbling deliciousness. Maybe add beans first for a cheese beanie.

I'm amazed people use both a toaster and the grill Shock. I am one of those that toast one side under the grill then turn over and put cheese directly onto the naked bread to grill/ toast the edges of the other side.

Any additional steps are a waste of time/ faffing in my eyes. Cheese on toast is supposed to be simple. Buttering, making sure the edges don't burn, what a load of faff.

drfoxtrot and others, many others. Reporting back here. For first time in fairly lengthy adult life I have just had cheese on toast to a new one side only toasted recipe

Absolutely mind blowing.

No more trying to cover all edges with cheese etc. No more burned crusts cos they were already toasted.

I cannot report on buttering as this
Seems to me to be a step too far have never liked fat on fat.
Also not yet delved into delights of under layers of marmite/onion marmalade etc. Those are on back burner for now.
Thank you mn !

I butter two slices of bread then turn them over so the unbuttered sides are facing upwards. I then put a load of grated cheese on one of the slices, before placing the second slice on top. The buttered sides of the bread should both be facing outwards - kind of like a reverse sandwich.

I then fry one side of the toastie on the hob (the butter on the bread stops it sticking to the pan) and turn halfway through to cook the other side.

Delicious!

HeronLanyon · 03/01/2019 18:35

Crimson72 - yes ! That there is a classic grilled cheese sandwich.

WildCherryBlossom · 03/01/2019 18:49

Yay @HeronLanyon 👏👏👏🥳🎉🎈🥂. Enjoy!

slappinthebass · 03/01/2019 20:07

No, never heard of this and I usually go a bit overboard with bitter. Although I do butter the outside of the bread if cooking it the old fashioned cheese toasty way in a pan, it is amazing like that.

DP.
I've made it with marg for years, but he's only just commented saying he makes it without due to the excess of grease, and my way was not the right way! Pah!
I use Marg mainly to stop the edges burning, never thought to only marg the edges.

When I was a child my mum had one of those cheese sandwich toasters that you press the bread in between, you were supposed to butter the outside of the sandwich to stop it sticking. They were great.

We've been loving this thread. Thanks Mumsnet!

Excellent @HeronLanyon Grin the one sided way is definitely the best. Forget fagging about with marging the edges and all sorts of other madness.

Toast bread in halogen oven. Lightly butter and then add a thin smear of either tomato puree or Dijon mustard. Cover with grated cheddar - I prefer extra mature - then back in the halogen cooker until cheese is all melt and bubbly. Yum.

HeronLanyon · 03/01/2019 22:23

Oo er I just got rid of the toaster element in all of this (and was enjoying the simplicity of a one grill dish) and now I have to add a new halogen oven Shock ! (Not entirely sure what a halogen oven is - Googling)
