Do you butter cheese on toast?

Do you spread Margerine or butter onto the toast before melting the cheese on it?
I do, apparently this is wrong.

I do, because I always put Marmite on the toast under the cheese and the butter helps it go on better

I lightly toast the bread first (nothing worse than a soft undercarriage) and butter the side the cheese is going on and then grill the cheese.

Yes Not a lot and didn't realise it was a thing not to have butter. Also toast the bread on both sides.

Yes. Usually spread, because I only really use butter for cooking and baking as I cba getting it soft enough to spread.

Love cheese on toast. It's my "feeling vaguely poorly" light lunch of choice. That with a cup of strong tea is an amazing mood pick-me-up.

Never ever thought to use butter for cheee on toast - I usually use a lot of cheese - wonder if I could use less ifnused butter ?
I do use butter quite liberally when doing grilled cheese sandwich.

Just remembered my consumption of cheese over the last week has been truly remarkable (even had some goats cheese on toast for breakfast) and I was planning a ‘go slow’ for a bit. Very tempted - onion marmalade yum !

No and don't put it on bacon, sausage or fish finger sandwiches either, they are all greasy enough. I do love butter though.

I do, however, butter the outside of the bread that touches the hot plates when making cheese toasties in the sandwich toaster.
