Do you spread Margerine or butter onto the toast before melting the cheese on it?
I do, apparently this is wrong.

Thanks those who make me feel less alone.

I might try without butter now though, at least once.

Yes. Otherwise the cheese doesn't stick to the bread as much. Tastes nicer too

BarbaraofSevillle · 01/01/2019 16:09

No, doesn't seem necessary but thanks to this thread I'm going to try marmite or pickle. I only toast one side of the bread too.

YABVU to even consider eating margarine.

But... like, margerine is healthy.

Yes I am also going to try a spread like Marmite or Ketchup underneath the cheese now.

OP posts:
Sitranced · 01/01/2019 16:18

No that's where the marmite goes.

tartanlass · 01/01/2019 16:22

Yes, it's not needed but oh so good!

AdaColeman · 01/01/2019 16:26

I've never buttered for cheese on toast, but I'm going to from now on!

BareBelliedSneetch · 01/01/2019 16:28

I’ll have cold slices of cheese on buttered toast. But if I am melting the cheese under the grill or in a sandwich toaster then no, no butter.

I’m not sure why I have a distinction!

JillScarlet · 01/01/2019 16:29

Some margarine is heathy-ish, some is extremely unhealthy.
All is nasty.
IMO.

DappledThings · 01/01/2019 16:31

Definitely. Wouldn't occur to me not to. I put butter on toast regardless of what else is going on it. So yes to butter under jam or Nutella as a PP asked. And peanut butter, lemon curd etc.

Butter is a primer. You always need a good undercoat to get the best results.

LaBelleSausage · 01/01/2019 19:06

DappledThings I’m not sure I could do butter under Nutella or peanut butter. I think they’re oily enough.
Yes to butter under jam or cream cheese though.

And I caused absolute outrage the other day by topping a scone with butter, then jam, then cream. Apparently there are people out there who think that’s excessive

CrispbuttyNo1 · 01/01/2019 19:09

Butter (in moderation) is much better for you than margarine.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 01/01/2019 19:30

Yes. But I only have it 2 or 3 times a year so I doubt it'll kill me.

snowone · 01/01/2019 19:31

Yes! Butter belongs on ALL toast, regardless of the toppings! Oh and it has to be proper butter - marg is just disgusting!!

starfishmummy · 01/01/2019 19:41

If the cheese doesn't completely cover the toast then I butter the bits if toast that have no cheese. I inherited this habit from my mother

fussychica · 01/01/2019 19:50

No, the cheese would practically slide off the toast. Enough fat without.

TheRhythmlessMan · 01/01/2019 19:50

Yes!

PotteringAlong · 01/01/2019 19:52

I do!

HeronLanyon · 01/01/2019 21:14

Now see there is a debate about how many sides are toasted before putting under grill ! Who knew cheese on toast could be so complex. I toast both sides but that does always mean I have to be careful to cover all the surface carefully with cheese to avoid burning already toasted bread. Can’t believe I have never thought how to avoid that and it’s not as though you don’t already have the grill on so why not just toast one side ! Thanks MN - always helpful in the big issues. Grin

VioletCharlotte · 01/01/2019 21:22

No, but I spread tomato purée on the toast before putting the cheese on.

MorningsEleven · 01/01/2019 21:38

Yes I am also going to try a spread like Marmite or Ketchup underneath the cheese now

Now you're in the realms of pizza toast, which is toast, ketchup, cheese and oregano. Nothing beats a cheap and dirty lunch

HeronLanyon · 01/01/2019 21:43

Thinly spread ketchup under cheese ? Feels like it would be too wet to me but I find it hard to go light on ketchup. Sounds good ! My version is toast rubbed with garlic then Parmesan and oregano. God cheese is so good. Veggie all my adult life and struggle when I think of giving up cheese but would like to for welfare issues. It’s tough.

ree348 · 01/01/2019 21:59

Yep, I do

Mummylife2018 · 02/01/2019 00:24

I've known some animal actually put butter on a BACON sandwich!!!!!

Stephisaur · 02/01/2019 00:25

I wouldn’t, but I would butter a cheese toastie so I don’t understand my own logic there!
