Do you spread Margerine or butter onto the toast before melting the cheese on it?
I do, apparently this is wrong.

No, why would you? The cheese melts.

greenpop21 · 02/01/2019 14:31

Like the sound of weasle's version though.

DurhamDurham · 02/01/2019 15:02

A thin but definite layer of Marmite is all that is required under the cheese Smile

Butter must always go on before cheese and toast.

Otherwise what would it stick to?

mywigwamneedsnewflaps · 02/01/2019 15:21

No !

Preference here is doorsteps of local bakery bread with either cheddar or leerdammer !

I chose my new cooker specifically based upon it having a separate grill to make cheese on toast Smile

Skyejuly · 02/01/2019 15:23

I butter every sandwich even cheese on toast and bacon

DontCallMeBaby · 02/01/2019 17:04

Toast in the toaster, ie toasted both sides. Carefully arranged cheese to ensure no burny edges (any burnt bits that creep through get cut off). Cheese grilled until bubbly and crispy (just melted cheese belongs IN a toastie, not ON cheese on toast). I may try butter, but I’m not remotely convinced.

Bacon butty is another matter. DH has butter and/or ketchup. DD ketchup only (she never butters sandwiches, however today pronounced a buttered toasted bagel the most delicious thing ever). I have ... the last bacon butty. They’re eating theirs, I’m still in the kitchen sneakily frying my bread in the fat and oil from all the bacon that has gone before. I never let on that I’m doing this in case either of them takes a fancy to it, it’s very much cook’s perks.

Osquito · 02/01/2019 17:41

Yes, have always done it and DP only realised last week when he caught sight of me making some. He caused a huge fuss, even when I pointed out that for the past 7years he has been happily eating my buttered cheese-toast.

Now people who butter their bread before peanut butter....... THAT’S weird.

whataboutbob · 02/01/2019 17:43

No, no and no. I’m a dietitian.

kateandme · 02/01/2019 17:47

if ur doing it in a pan its a helpful thing to do though.they always tell you to do it on toasties so I don't see the huge difference

DameBurleyChassis · 02/01/2019 17:50

My ex introduced me to buttering the crusts of toasted cheese. Bit fiddly but tasty.

Sparrowlegs248 · 02/01/2019 17:52

I considered starting this thread earlier! Yes I do.

ALemonyPea · 02/01/2019 17:52

Toast, butter, marmite, cheese, in that order.

BackBoiler · 02/01/2019 17:53

No i marmite it

KarinandtheSeaUrchins · 02/01/2019 17:54

Yes, obvs! I grate the butter and the cheese together and mix before putting on the untoasted side of the bread.

Tartyflette · 02/01/2019 17:56

Unsalted butter. (Preferably French like Lescure or Beurre d’Isigny, Président at a push) Toasted both sides.
The cheese doesn’t slide off if you slice it rather than grating it. Splash of Tabasco.
Milk of Magnesia for dessert.

Conseulabananahammock · 02/01/2019 17:58

Yes but butter on top of the cheese...

PreseaCombatir · 02/01/2019 18:04

Hell yeah...
And he’ll yeah to butter in bacon Earnie’s as well, has to be as soon as the bacons done though, and then butter goes all lovely and melty. yum

PreseaCombatir · 02/01/2019 18:05

My auto correct went mad haha

WildCherryBlossom · 02/01/2019 18:11

My husband toasts both sides (yeah, I should LTB).

I, however, toast one side. Then I add grated cheese mixed with mayonnaise!

Serve with a little black pepper and brown sauce, chutney or Tabasco.

Qcng · 02/01/2019 18:18

Some great replies!
Dabbing the melted cheese with kitchen paper Grin

Only putting butter on the gaps where the cheese isn't resting on the toast -genius.

I wish there was as special drooling tongue emoji for this one-

Yes, obvs! I grate the butter and the cheese together and mix before putting on the untoasted side of the bread

😂

Ancient recipe, passed down from my grandmother (who was skinny as a rake!).

No butter though.

longwayoff · 02/01/2019 18:32

One thing to say here. Fried Cheese Sandwich. In butter. Never try one.

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/01/2019 18:37

I like to make a ham and cheese sandwich, dip it in beaten egg and fry it until the outside is crispy and the cheese is all melty. A bit fiddly but totally yum!
