How ill am I?

Temperature of 41, which isn't shifting after taking paracetamol about an hour ago.

Very cold hands.

Feel really cold and can't stop shivering.

No voice, and a disgusting cough. Not really a sore throat.

Very runny nose.

Stomach ache.

I'm compos mentis although I feel a bit woozy when standing up.

I'm not one for going to the doctors and obviously it's a hideous time of day/year to be having to see an ooh gp. Also, Dd is asleep in bed and we'd have to wake her and take her with us because we have no childcare.

But if the consensus is that I need to see a doctor tonight I'll go.

Or tell me to bugger off to bed and stop being a drama queen! Xmas Smile

You need medical assessment and reasonably urgently. Please call and get help now.

madmum5811 · 27/12/2018 21:43

call 111 now please.

purplerainbows · 27/12/2018 21:45

I'd call 111 and see what they say

Call 111 and get assessed rather than dragging your arse to A&E if it's not needed.

You might need to be seen, might not. Do you have cold feet as well?

MamaLovesMango · 27/12/2018 21:45

Sounds like an infection of some sort. I’d get it sorted tonight at OOH, or tomorrow morning at the GP if you really can’t (but you can, it’s just inconvenient). Other option is to phone 111 and wait for a callback from a practitioner and they’ll decide for you.

Bigpizzalover · 27/12/2018 21:46

Are you eating and drinking? It depends, some people’s bodies can cope with a temperature, others can’t. If I was able to keep food and drink down I’d personally keep up with the paracetamol and try wait until the morning, assuming I didn’t get worse in the night.

If I wasn’t able to keep liquids down, and was feeling faint, coupled with the high temp I’d be worried about dehydration and seek medical advice.

Could a friend/family memeber either take you or wait with DD if you feel you need to be seen? Or if ooh is close by are you well enough to travel by taxi?

I have no medical training so just going by what I would do in this situation. Maybe 111 could be of help? Hope you’re feeling better soon.

PleaseJustSayNo · 27/12/2018 21:46

How long have you had a temp for? Have you taken ibuprofen? Have you been drinking lots of fluids, passing urine etc need more info than that

Wellthisisunexpected · 27/12/2018 21:48

How are you measuilring your temp?

OwlsAndBears · 27/12/2018 21:48

Feet feel cold too actually. But not as cold as hands.

I took ibuprofen about 3 hours ago.

I am able to drink and have been drinking water and weeing as normal.

No appetite.

Seems like maybe the best thing I can do is contact 111 and go from there.

I was like these a few weeks ago had severe tonsillitis (throat wasn’t particularly sore).

Sound like your fighting an infection your body needs help with. I’d phone 111 for advice

OwlsAndBears · 27/12/2018 21:49

Digital infrared thermometer on forehead.

OP posts:
Haworthia · 27/12/2018 21:50

That’s a very, very high temp for an adult. I’d seek advice if I were you.

Wellthisisunexpected · 27/12/2018 21:50

Actually if you've had paracetamol an hour ago and have a temp of 41 c I do t think it matters much. I'd get straight to OOH. your child can easily cope with a disturbed night

VioletCharlotte · 27/12/2018 21:50

It sounds like flu to me. I'd alternate paracetamol and ibroprofen and try to get your temp down. Give 111 a call for advice.

BeakyPlinder · 27/12/2018 21:51

You would probably be dead if your temperature was 41C! You should go to a&e and get proper advice and observations

PleaseJustSayNo · 27/12/2018 21:51

So long as you're keeping hydrated I'd say maybe hold off until morning. Continue with regular paracetamol and ibuprofen?

The majority on here will say 111 and appt tonight, which is fine. It's really dependent on what you feel is best

PleaseJustSayNo · 27/12/2018 21:53

@BeakyPlinder I can assure you that OP would not be dead with a temp of 41 Confused

Looneytune253 · 27/12/2018 21:53

My dh has been like this over Xmas and it’s been flu. Bless him.

Looneytune253 · 27/12/2018 21:54

@BeakyPlinder how do u suppose she’s composing her Mumsnet thread being dead?

TeenagersandFurbabies · 27/12/2018 21:55

Sounds like you have flu. www.nhs.uk/conditions/flu/

polkadotpixie · 27/12/2018 21:56

I would say it depends how bad you feel. 41C is a very high fever but some people can tolerate a very high temp and others would be very ill

I had a 40C fever last week and felt unwell and dizzy but not incapacitated and was able to function. I didn't bother seeking medical attention but if I'd felt I was in any danger then I would have done

Goldmandra · 27/12/2018 21:56

You would probably be dead if your temperature was 41C!

My DD1 had a temp of 41 recorded by A&E when she had appendicitis. It's a seriously high temperature but not fatal.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 27/12/2018 21:57

Do you have a more accurate thermometer? Those forehead ones tend to be a bit hit and miss.

If it were me I'd probably drink gallons of water, head off to bed and let the fever go unchecked but I'm not generally the most sensible with things like that. Fever is an immune response and does have a purpose so unless it is actually endangering me, I tend to let it get on with it and only attempt to lower it if I have to.

111 is probably the most sensible thing to do.

babysharkah · 27/12/2018 21:57

Have you got any ibuprofen? Take it and if temp doesn't drop I'd call 111. There's probably an infection somewhere that needs antib's. Biggest concern would be sepsis.

BeardedMum · 27/12/2018 21:59

I would say that if you can be on MN typing and reading responses its not even proper flu and peobably just a virus.

I am not medically trained!!
