How ill am I?

OwlsAndBears · 27/12/2018 21:40

Temperature of 41, which isn't shifting after taking paracetamol about an hour ago.

Very cold hands.

Feel really cold and can't stop shivering.

No voice, and a disgusting cough. Not really a sore throat.

Very runny nose.

Stomach ache.

I'm compos mentis although I feel a bit woozy when standing up.

I'm not one for going to the doctors and obviously it's a hideous time of day/year to be having to see an ooh gp. Also, Dd is asleep in bed and we'd have to wake her and take her with us because we have no childcare.

But if the consensus is that I need to see a doctor tonight I'll go.

Or tell me to bugger off to bed and stop being a drama queen! Xmas Smile

I’ve had a viral flu with a temp of 40 and rigors (sheeting sweats and freezing cold, shaking my boots off). Only thing to do is keep your fluids up, keep warm and watch if you stop weeing, feel confused etc as they are signs of sepsis

xsahm · 27/12/2018 22:00

Get yourself checked out, if it's a bacterial infection (ie not a virus) then you'll need antibiotics ASAP. You're not wasting anyone's time with SHS you've described, the doctors are there to help. Call 111 for ooh appt as first port of call

hippoherostandinghere · 27/12/2018 22:00

Ibruprofen also brings a temp down so if it hasn't worked after 3 hrs then I think you need seen by a dr.

111 have arranged for a nurse or doctor to call me in the next hour.

I'll update when I know more.

I won’t tell you to bugger off and stop being a drama queen because it sounds horrible!
But from the info you’ve posted, it sounds like a virus, not something to be going to OOH with.
High temp, sore throat, shivery, runny nose and cough etc sounds like you need to sleep it off and wait it out.
Only you really know how bad it is though.
Best thing is to seek medical advice.
Hope you feel better soon, it sounds rotten Flowers Brew

MamaLovesMango · 27/12/2018 22:03

BeardedMum many people can do more than you think with proper ‘flu.

Medically trained here Grin

Nat6999 · 27/12/2018 22:04

Get lots of fluids, sponge yourself down, get a fan on if you can & keep up with the paracetamol & Nurofen, if you aren't any better by morning then contact your GP

CakeNinja · 27/12/2018 22:04

X-posted. Hope it’s put your mind at rest and you get your call sooner rather than later. :)

MamaLovesMango · 27/12/2018 22:05

Actually thinking about it, on a personal level, I had proper flu once and walked the quarter of a mile to my GP because my car was having it’s MOT. Not quite sure how I did it but I did 🤷‍♀️

thaegumathteth · 27/12/2018 22:07

Have you tested the thermometer on someone else?

Calling 111 is the right thing. What’s your pulse rate and respiratory rate like?

BifsWif · 27/12/2018 22:09

Call 111.

Ask them if it could be sepsis.

BeakyPlinder · 27/12/2018 22:12

I'm suggesting a temperature of 41C is not accurate since she's well enough to ask Mumsnet and not seek actual medical advice

Helspopje · 27/12/2018 22:12

From the NHS website

Sepsis symptoms in older children and adults

Early symptoms
Early symptoms of sepsis may include:
a high temperature (fever) or low body temperature
chills and shivering
a fast heartbeat
fast breathing
Many of the symptoms of sepsis are also associated with meningitis. The first symptoms of meningitis are often fever, vomiting, headache and feeling unwell.

Septic shock
In some cases, symptoms of more severe sepsis or septic shock (when your blood pressure drops to a dangerously low level) develop soon after.
These can include:
feeling dizzy or faint
a change in mental state – such as confusion or disorientation
diarrhoea
nausea and vomiting
slurred speech
severe muscle pain
severe breathlessness
less urine production than normal – for example, not urinating for a day
cold, clammy and pale or mottled skin
loss of consciousness

When to get medical help
Seek medical advice urgently from NHS 111 if you've recently had an infection or injury and you have possible early signs of sepsis.
If sepsis is suspected, you'll usually be referred to hospital for further diagnosis and treatment.
Severe sepsis and septic shock are medical emergencies. If you think you or someone in your care has one of these conditions, go straight to A&E or call 999.

Poor you OP.

You sound exactly how I felt on Christmas Eve.

I was out for a meal and felt horrendous. I started crying in the restaurant I felt that bad Blush Ice cold hands, shivering uncontrollably, sore throat and very hot head and face. I honestly felt so terrible that I couldn’t stop crying and had to ask my friend to undress me at 27 years old.

Get yourself to bed, plenty of water and a flannel for your forehead if you have one. I sympathise, it’s horrid. I felt slightly better on Christmas Day. Still not 100% but I didn’t need medical attention, just lots of lemsip and chocolate

Helspopje · 27/12/2018 22:14

As a consultant physician and someone who has had sepsis triggering the major sepsis bundle twice - get checked out

You are febrile
Have cold extremities
Wobbly on standing- could be low BP

This sort of stuff isn’t to be messed with imho

Bluemascara4 · 27/12/2018 22:21

^ this

Please come back and update OP .

Gunpowder · 27/12/2018 22:24

I’m glad a medic is calling you. I’d be worried about sepsis too.

And I am so Hmm when people say ‘you can’t be that poorly as you are typing on mumsnet’. It’s not like the 90s where you had go downstairs and sit at a desk top and wait 20 minutes for a dial up connection. Most people MN from their phone. Less effort than going to the loo or getting a glass of water.

Of course people shouldn’t run to a&e with a sore toe but people who are potentially very poorly need to be assessed by a medic; even if it turns out to be ‘just’ a virus.

Anyway, derailment over. I hope it is ‘just a virus OP but it seems prudent to get it checked out JIC given your symptoms.

MotorcycleMayhem · 27/12/2018 22:31

My first thought was sepsis, but I'm no expert. Glad 111 are getting someone to call you back.

Hope it's something benign and minor. Keep warm and hydrated.

OwlsAndBears · 27/12/2018 22:40

I just spoke to a doctor and they have arranged an ooh appointment at 11.15pm. Thanks everyone for your advice.

GobblersKnob · 27/12/2018 22:43

Hope you get on okay, and hope the OOH isn't far to travel.

MrsEricBana · 27/12/2018 22:43

That's good owls. Hope you feel better soon.

changingname18 · 27/12/2018 22:58

Sounds like what my DP & DS has had. Son has had it for almost 6 days now. Temp plus cold & shivering but burning to touch was for 3 days. Now they're both in cough & snot mode. They basically didn't move from the bed & sofa for 3 days. Hope you're feeling better soon! It's completely floored these two & they've missed all of Christmas. Get well soon

dinkyprawn · 27/12/2018 23:08

I was very similar on Sunday, had a cold/cough for 5/6 days leading to Sunday but felt pretty much back to normal bar the cough. Woke Sunday with really sore throat, drank lots of water in case dehydrated... kept falling asleep every 90 mins for 30-60 mins and by 2pm my temperature was at 40.3 shivering, cold hands and feet (felt freezing all over anyway) had been taking paracetamol throughout due to sore throat but temperature continued to rise and I continued to shiver. I continued to drink cold drinks, sleep on and off and take paracetamol (can't take ibuprofen) woke up Monday morning with completely white tonsils, temperature levelled off at 39c very obviously tonsillitis. I haven't had it like this for 8 years and it completely caught me off guard. Feeling much better today after lots of sleep, water & hot salt gargling.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
