How ill am I?

OwlsAndBears · 27/12/2018 21:40

Temperature of 41, which isn't shifting after taking paracetamol about an hour ago.

Very cold hands.

Feel really cold and can't stop shivering.

No voice, and a disgusting cough. Not really a sore throat.

Very runny nose.

Stomach ache.

I'm compos mentis although I feel a bit woozy when standing up.

I'm not one for going to the doctors and obviously it's a hideous time of day/year to be having to see an ooh gp. Also, Dd is asleep in bed and we'd have to wake her and take her with us because we have no childcare.

But if the consensus is that I need to see a doctor tonight I'll go.

Or tell me to bugger off to bed and stop being a drama queen! Xmas Smile

I would have said it sounds like flu too. Hope all is well after the appointment.

Kittykat93 · 27/12/2018 23:16

Glad you're being seen op.

DragginBallsEEEE · 27/12/2018 23:20

Glad you're being seen so quick, hopefully you'll be back home in bed soon enough x

I'm of the opinion that while serious illness is unlikely, it's always worth getting checked out if you're unsure. Plus if you do have an infection the sooner you start antibiotics the better.

OComeAllYeFaithful · 27/12/2018 23:26

I’m a nurse and I would say anyone with a high temperature that doesn’t come down with paracetamol should seek medical attention. I’m glad you called and are getting seen Owls. I hope you don’t have to wait too long and are diagnosed and treated quickly.

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2018 23:27

Hope you feel better soon x

Justbackfromnewwine · 27/12/2018 23:29

No harm in asking 111

I’ve experienced similar symptoms and put it down to a nasty virus (unless there was obvious source of infection like agonising thoat or ear or cough/shortness of breath, OR any kind of little scratch or wound) and would not have tried to see a doctor unless it went on more than a few days.

BUT you know what’s normal for you and I am not a doctor.

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 27/12/2018 23:30

Dc has had swine flu twice. She was more than capable of texting her friends & surfing the internet!

Justbackfromnewwine · 27/12/2018 23:31

And my temp has always come down after paracetamol and ibuprofen (sometimes not just from paracetamol). Good luck and hope you are not kept waiting too long.

Hezz · 27/12/2018 23:34

Hope you've been seen now.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 27/12/2018 23:46

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

SageYourResoluteOracle · 28/12/2018 00:09

On reading your OP my immediate thought was sepsis too. DH has developed it 3 times. It's terrifying to watch and I'm very glad you're being seen. Fingers crossed it's 'only' flu and I hope you start to feel better soon.

For posters suggesting that someone that ill wouldn't be able to text, even when DH had a temp of 41, was tachycardic and had sats of

Ollivander84 · 28/12/2018 00:23

Sometimes you don't realise how ill you are. I drove to OOH after they suggested an appointment and was in the waiting room. Doctor came out and asked for a nebuliser, I'm looking around the room all "oh who is poorly?"
That would be for me Blush I didn't realise the coughing so much was the fact I couldn't breathe and had pneumonia Blush

I've also made my own way to hospital straight before emergency spinal surgery so my judgment is frankly a bit shit

thaegumathteth · 28/12/2018 00:29

I had sepsis recently with a uti so make sure that’s checked if no other obvious source

OwlsAndBears · 28/12/2018 05:37

Just got home. They've prescribed antibiotics and I had a blood test. The will call tomorrow with the results. They said that the sepsis was caught before it got really serious so thank you all for your advice. The alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

I’m really glad you’ve been seen and have medication. I hope you’re feeling much better soon Flowers Get plenty of rest now!

xsahm · 28/12/2018 07:44

Gosh that's really frightening OP, so glad you were seen.

Equally frightening the number of people here who said take some paracetamol and sleep it off. Rest well.

Glad you made the cal op and hope you are better soon

Jazzhan · 28/12/2018 08:26

How are you feeling today?

BifsWif · 28/12/2018 09:30

I’m so glad you got seen.

I’m glad that sepsis awareness is becoming much more common. As soon as I read you post that was my first though, but it wouldn’t have been a year or so ago.

OwlsAndBears · 28/12/2018 12:35

I'm ok. My temperature has been around 39 since they sent me home. (It was 41.3 when the ooh gp took it and she then sent me straight round to a+e - luckily the ooh gp service here is run out of the a+e department) and I feel less shaky.

I haven't been able to sleep though - a combination of feeling too ill and too freaked out. My gp just called me and has prescribed something to help with that this evening. Dh will go and collect it for me this afternoon.

I'm one of the lucky ones - it was caught early and I'm able to drink and keep my hydration levels up myself.

The a+e staff think it is pneumonia which has triggered the sepsis but the blood test and swabs should confirm that.

OP posts:
ChestyNut · 28/12/2018 14:08

Hope you recover quickly OP.
I’m surprised they’ve let you home when your systemically unwell with sepsis.

Don’t hesitate to go back if your symptoms worsen or don’t improve with oral antibiotics Flowers

GobblersKnob · 28/12/2018 14:57

Glad you are out, and hope you have a swift recovery Owls.

I don't think it's unusual ChestyNut, not if it's caught quickly.

SageYourResoluteOracle · 29/12/2018 00:00

Phew. So glad to read that you've had antibiotics. Keep a watch on yourself though as pneumonia is a heck of an infection. Hope you feel better soon and the panicky feeling can be partly due to the infection but also the shock, which is understandable.
