How’s your Christmas morning going?

It’s just me, DW and DMIL this year chez nous. It’s 10:25, I’ve been up since 9:00, made DMIL her morning cuppa at 8:40 and not a movement upstairs yet. DW put her head round the door at about 9:30 to check that DMIL had had her morning cuppa and went back upstairs.

We’re having Christmas dinner this evening, so not much to do on that front just yet. I’m tempted to go out for an hour on my bike, given the complete absence of any Christmas atmosphere. Merry Christmas all!

Not quite going to plan. BiL and his lovely partner (J) were coming for lunch. All food bought etc etc. BiL phoned last night to say J's mother had been diagnosed with a very serious illness, so she's gone home to Scotland to be with her immediate family, go to hospital etc etc and therefore, he's staying home (40 miles away) and fending for himself today "to save us the trouble" of cooking. I'm cooking anyway, so if anyone wants to drop round for the full on turkey cook up at about 14.00 ...... Smile ....

Frosty66611 · 25/12/2018 13:19

@4strings my gran used to always say things like that to me. “Oh you’re filling it out a bit” etc. she would never say it to my sister, only to me and it drove me mad

jinglebells123 · 25/12/2018 13:27

We had some last minute change of plans for Christmas after DM took I'll with a bad chest infection so dinner is being prepared at mine theb taken to hers so she can go to bed if she's feeling too unwell.

On the plus side it means I don't have to tidy the house and she also wasn't well enough to turn up at ours at 7 am to watch DD open her presents - the first time since DD was born and it was the nicest Christmas morning ever without DM charging around (she's a rotund woman) getting in my way abs and getting in the way of poor dds unwrapping by constantly pointing a camera in her face trying to take videos of her to send to far flung relatives that DD has never met - I think this is the way forward as Christmas mornings go - no doubt this will cause an argument next year!

Have a good one everybody;

Woke at 8 and grabbed a slice of toast.
DS1 ( he's 25 but was rather excited for a good reason) woke the rest in a very loud manner, and we gradually gathered around ( 3 of my kids, two partners, my Mum and brother) and gave gifts and then DS1 proposed to his girlfriend :) :)
We are all very happy, several wines down and I will be serving dinner shortly!

GreyGardens88 · 25/12/2018 13:57

I had an upset stomach first thing, I think it may have been the spring onions i had last night. I got a set of plates as my only present so didn't exactly get my heart racing. I went for a long walk. I haven't yet had a drink which is unusual for me!

mycatplotsdeath · 25/12/2018 13:57

Picked Mil up on way to Dd1s
Just swapped presents and she has got everyone something apart from me.
Who needs a drink? 🙅🏻‍♀️😀

Have read through the thread and thought I’d embarrass myself as being the only person who’ll admit (it seems) spending Christmas alone. Did receive “invites” but I think the “ marks say it all. Anyway, enough of that.

Enjoying not being at work, listening to the radio and reading. The peace and quiet is a Christmas present in itself.

GreyGardens88 · 25/12/2018 14:38

Christmas alone sounds fantastic, I would even buy my own gifts Grin

Frosty66611 · 25/12/2018 14:40

I would enjoy Christmas alone. I find family gatherings tedious

Deathraystare · 25/12/2018 14:55

In work now. Waited 2 hours for a cab!

princessspotify · 25/12/2018 15:02

I'm sat on sofa watching avengers infinity war drinking coffee and eating celebrations. today very chilled. eldest ds playing subbuteo and youngest holed up playing minecraft

Enko · 25/12/2018 15:08

lovely day so far stockings opened and laughed at silly presents then breakfast with buck's fizz smoked salmon scrambled eggs. dd1 and I prepping veg and made but roast for dd2. had smoked salmon sandwiches (butternut squash pate for dd2) now waiting for Turkey to finish before doing veggies. aiming for a 4 30 dinner.

expatmigrant · 25/12/2018 15:09

Great day here. Opened presents with DC and Dh this morning, had a hearty breakfast then went out to ski for the day. Back in apartment now, turkey in the oven (brought it with us), popped a bottle of bubbles and feeling very chilled. Only downside VPN not working so won't be watching BBC. But I'm sure we'll survive 😁🎄

Girlsworld92 · 25/12/2018 15:12

Both DH & I have woken with stomach cramps ☹️ mine seem to have calmed down now & I'm looking forward to Xmas dinner
I didn't get much sleep due to his post beer snoring so just closed my eyes for 30 mins
DH is struggling a bit. Tried to send him to bed but he won't have it
Kids seem happy enough though & we've had a nice chilled day

tinkerbellone · 25/12/2018 15:16

I'm on my own. Children at their dad's. Feeling crap. Cleaning eldest DD's bedroom.
Cried. Slept. Hate Christmas.

Figmentofimagination · 25/12/2018 15:20

We all slept till just after 8am. DS (19mo) is a bit overwhelmed by it all so we are having to open presents in stages. I am currently drinking a bottle of Prosecco with cranberry juice to myself to make myself feel better as the turkey hasn't defrosted. So we are trying to quickly defrost it using cold water. Was supposed to be in the oven 2 hours ago.

RedToothBrush · 25/12/2018 15:46

DH after moaning yesterday that the supermarket had 'nothing in' and that we have 'nothing for Christmas', and his declaration this morning we were having fries for christmas dinner has now gone to the fridge and exclaimed we have too much food (no shit sherlock? It was all massively under control), has now decided he wants to barbeque the beef...

labazs · 25/12/2018 15:49

i wish i could join someones chaotic happy christmas dp asleep after his dinner i had a vegi thingy from asda but wasnt nice too spicy for me opened family gifts all nice me and dp dont do gifts oh well

Excited101 · 25/12/2018 15:54

Oh it’s fine. Me, DM, DF, DSis and DSis-bf. Pretty much the usual I guess. I haven’t had a partner for 5 years now, I suppose I should be used to it as I only ever had 2 christmas’a with someone but hey, looks like I’m not. DSis bought the bf tickets to a show and got our DF to buy tickets for the same show for him and DM... I’m sure they’ll all have a lovely time. Lots of little presents —that I don’t need or want— , nothing from my wish list. But I won’t be ungrateful. I’m lucky to have family around me that care and a place to go. That’s much more than a lot of people.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/12/2018 15:58

It's just 7 am here now. DH, (adult) DS2, and I have opened gifts and had coffee (with Amaretto or Kahlua). DH and I are lounging around and DS2 is upstairs installing the new monitor we got him for his PC.

At 11 DBro and I will sit with Mum for the luncheon at the care home. Her dementia is too far advanced to be brought here anymore. The rest of the family will show up around 12 or 1 pm.

So for now, I intend to relax and watch A Christmas Story.

Annandale · 25/12/2018 16:11

Dm has just gone home so I've finally got some crap telly on and am mnetting on the sofa. Ds trying out new tech. Dm very upset not to be able to help with the washing up - was great to be able to put my foot down and ignore it (we have a dishwasher, it'll get done in time, I spent the morning cooking solidly so don't want to spend the pm there as well). She very kindly drove us down to dh's grave though. Slowly floating off the sofa with cava and a cheeky extra pudding.

AlessandroVasectomi · 25/12/2018 16:27

Interesting to read how the Christmas experiences differ. Some are very familiar, for example the domineering mother, but sympathies to those whose Christmas is not going well for other reasons. We’ve had a light lunch, Facetimed DS4 and turkey is now in for evening dinner. The cooking smells are driving us all mad so it’s difficult not to pick at snacks and nibbles until dinner is ready.

Having 4 children, we had some great Christmases while they were growing up but they are all in foreign lands now in different time zones. Some of the experiences on this thread bring back very happy memories.

Dinner went well and all leftovers are now safely in the fridge! We did presents after dinner, then the Queen, and we've been half-watching the Jungle Book since then.

I am hoping someone else will wash up as I'm exhausted after cooking!

I've got salmon and cream cheese canapes and a cheeseboard for later if anyone can manage it.

PartTimePunk · 25/12/2018 17:52

Woke up with kids at 7.30 and immediately knew I was ill. Managed to make it through present opening. Since then I've been wearing a tread between the bathroom and my bed. DH has stepped up and cooked his first ever Christmas dinner though; he's shattered now GrinGrinGrin

ScreamingBadSanta · 25/12/2018 17:55
