I was just doing an online trivia quiz and one of the answers mentioned that zebra crossings are so-called because the black and white stripes resemble a zebra's coat. I can't believe that not once in my 40-odd years on this planet did I twig the connection!

What else have I missed...? Confused

You know how you can buy Apple chargers with either a large or a small plug? I thought that was simply a design feature until a very patient assistant in JL told me the larger ones carried more power so the device charged more quickly

The toaster one and the petrol pump one always turn up on these threads. The toaster one isn’t true and not every car has the petrol pump arrow (mine doesn’t).

Have we had Portsmouth is an island yet? That’s another one that always comes up, along with the pineapples and Gibraltar ones!

I think it's bonkers that anyone didn't immediately get that Flo Rida is a play on Florida. It's literally the name of the state with a space in it. Confused

Then again, I'm American so I am quite familiar with Florida.

charis · 22/12/2018 08:32

I've seen the petrol arrow thing argued on another forum recently. I think some cars have no arrow but it's the side the handle is on the little daahboard light of a pump corresponding to it...

explodingkitten · 22/12/2018 08:33

I was totally confused that the Netherlands was Holland and still confused that the people there are called Dutch

Well, in English we are called the Dutch. We call ourselves "Nederlands" in our own language which makes more sense.

Graphista · 22/12/2018 08:44

"It took me years to realise that ‘only smarties have the answer’ was a play on words." Ditto I thought there were trivia questions on the packs or something (still think that'd be cool - also I want the old tubes with the plastic lid back!)

Batfurger - nobody knows everything don't get smug, there's bound to be people on this thread know stuff you don't.

My bro was far older than he should have been when he realised the Cuban missile crisis wasn't the USA being just paranoid about communism/nuclear weapons ANYWHERE in the world but practically on their doorstep! When he learned it's technically possible to walk from USA to Russia he was like 😱😱😱😱😱

BellMcEnd · 22/12/2018 08:51

I only found out recently that Banoffi Pie is so named because it contains banana and toffee. I thought it originated from a place called Banoffi.

Twat..........Grin

XmasHolly · 22/12/2018 08:52

Ditto I thought there were trivia questions on the packs or something (still think that'd be cool

There are on the multi packs of tiny boxes (snack size or lunchbox size pack, forget which they call it) Grin

MorrisZapp · 22/12/2018 08:57

Paddy Ashdown: mind blown.

I do feel sorry for people who have called their kids Bear or Tiger without realising that Bear Grylls is called Edward and Tiger Woods is called Eldrick.

BellMcEnd · 22/12/2018 08:57

No wonder we ended up with Brexit. Jesus facepalm.

Oh wow! Thanks to this genius poster I’ve just realised that Brexit is a portmanteau for Britain Exit Hmm. Thank you so much for elucidating me..........

diddl · 22/12/2018 08:58

" but it's the side the handle is on the little daahboard light of a pump corresponding to it"

Pretty sure that that doesn't always work either.

NecklessMumster · 22/12/2018 08:58

On a pelican crossing-if you put your hand under the box where the button is there is often a little cone that rotates when the crossing man symbol turns green...for deaf/blind people

FestiveGanesh · 22/12/2018 09:09

If you say "orange" really fast, six times it sounds like "gullible".

gladheart · 22/12/2018 09:09

The little piggy that went to market wasn't going there with his basket over his arm.

OMFG Shock

ShadyLady53 · 22/12/2018 09:12

@BellMcEnd

I reckon you’d have realised it earlier if you’d seen it spelled correctly- Banoffee. Banoffi looks like a place in Italy to me, like Capri or something.

EarringsandLipstick · 22/12/2018 09:17

pumpedup re nail file - it depends on the file! I just peeled one back excitedly to realise...nothing. Just one wasted nail file 😂

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 22/12/2018 09:17

The thing about lift buttons... surely fairly obvious you press up if you want to go up and down if you want to go down. But the why on the top floor of the local hospital does one pair of lifts have a down button and the other an UP!? Confused

Knittink · 22/12/2018 09:20

I thought Artic lorries were refrigerated

Confused But that would be 'arCtic', as opposed to 'artic' which is short for articulated.

EarringsandLipstick · 22/12/2018 09:22

Oops. I should have read Bondi’s post before setting about my nail file 🙈

borntobequiet · 22/12/2018 09:22

I don’t think piggy in the toes rhyme means little pig. It doesn’t make sense, even as nonsense. I think it’s a (mis)pronounciation of “peg” - a peg is a little protrusion, people still say “toothy-peg” for a tooth. So I’ve always seen it as just a fun toe game, with no meaning.

Icansmellcolours · 22/12/2018 09:58

I didn't realise the why did the chicken cross the road joke had a double meaning until I was an adult. To get to the other side - literally get to the other side of the road.
To get to the other side - to get to the after life.

italiancortado · 22/12/2018 10:34

mrs..

Baa Baa Black Sheep isn’t the same tune as Twinkle Twinkle

Yes, it's is!

italiancortado · 22/12/2018 10:35

You know how you can buy Apple chargers with either a large or a small plug? I thought that was simply a design feature until a very patient assistant in JL told me the larger ones carried more power so the device charged more quickly

Eh?

The bigger ones are designed for iPad charging, the smaller for iPhones.

Caribbeanescape · 22/12/2018 10:52

Baa Baa Black Sheep is not the same tune as Twinkle Twinkle!

Smidge001 · 22/12/2018 10:53

Twinkle twinkle and baa baa Black sheep aren't the same tune! They start with the same 4 notes but after that they're different.
Baa baa black sheep have you any wool
Is not the same as
Twinklw twinkle little star
Not the same number of notes or anything.
