I was just doing an online trivia quiz and one of the answers mentioned that zebra crossings are so-called because the black and white stripes resemble a zebra's coat. I can't believe that not once in my 40-odd years on this planet did I twig the connection!

This reminds me of a pondering my very charming and proper FIL once had. While waiting in a queue behind two young women he overheard one say to the other “naw, yah thick nob jockey”

He has never been able to work out of the recipient of said comment was a jockey of thick nobs or an unintelligent jockey.

I was in my twenties before I realised a mongoose was a real animal. For some reason (I blame my dad) I thought it was a mythical creature like a unicorn.

I was totally confused that the Netherlands was Holland and still confused that the people there are called Dutch.

Did you know the the characters in Frozen; Hans, Christof, Anna, Sven were named so if you run them together they sound like Hans Christian Anderson, who wrote the story that the film is based on (the Snow Queen)

What I didn't know is that HOLLAND is not a country! It's a province of The Netherlands!

There are actually two provinces (North Holland and South Holland) that make up Holland. It’s sort of like Yorkshire being made up of North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. All of which are counties in England.
