I was just doing an online trivia quiz and one of the answers mentioned that zebra crossings are so-called because the black and white stripes resemble a zebra's coat. I can't believe that not once in my 40-odd years on this planet did I twig the connection!

What else have I missed...? Confused

I didn’t realise about Twinkle Twinkle and the alphabet song until a year or two ago.
I teach reception and my class tend to spontaneously burst into song.
The other day they decided to sing the Alphabet Song and then followed it up with Twinkle Twinkle. I told them that I had be very old before I realised they were the same tune and they looked at me like I was mad.

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 21/12/2018 23:34

Jellie and Baa Baa Black Sheep is the same tune as well.

It's called sand because it's in between the sea and land

OopsInamechangedagain · 21/12/2018 23:38

Sorry for going awol - just done my Christmas food shop. You are making me feel better about myself/worse about humanity Grin

I have to say I'm rather surprised no-one's come up with "pineapples don't grow on trees" yet...

Tin foil/baking parchement/ cling film boxes have push through flaps either end so the roll stays in the box!

CountessOfNowhere · 21/12/2018 23:59

The Beatles were named because of The Crickets, but with a musical beat in!

I also used to think that the University Challenge teams sat on top of one another but I think that that thought was helped along by The Young Ones...

JellieEllie · 22/12/2018 00:00

@LittleLlamaontheduskyroad oh wow! You have now blown my mind 🤯

PorpentinaScamander · 22/12/2018 00:15

Gibraltar will be mentioned sooner or later.

mrsjackrussell · 22/12/2018 00:30

A thing I learned recently was lefty loosy righty tighty when unscrewing or screwing up something.

italiancortado · 22/12/2018 00:32

Never thought about Beatles being ‘beat’ before.

Probably because the name had nothing to do with that!!

That the reason the bed was named 'bed' is because the word actually looks like a bed

Definitely not haha

It's called sand because it's in between the sea and land

Where on earth did you get that one!!

ClashCityRocker · 22/12/2018 00:36

There was a block outside my bedroom window last night, he kept shouting 'stand and deliver!' 'stand and deliver'.

I told him to stop but he was adamant.

MrsFezziwig · 22/12/2018 00:54

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad
Baa Baa Black Sheep isn’t the same tune as Twinkle Twinkle

And Blanche M you can now not only travel more efficiently in lifts, but you won’t be annoying the people already in the lift by causing it to stop and then not getting in because it’s going in the wrong direction
Smile

BoswellandForshort · 22/12/2018 01:03

Watching University Challenge, I always used to wonder how they got them into the top layer of seats

If that was the layout, they’d just use stairs at the side surely.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 22/12/2018 01:03

I’m beside myself at the tomato and basil sauce containing Fox - I have tears rolling down my face.

Thank you mumsnet

Sunflowersforever · 22/12/2018 01:09

I only discovered recently there is a Land of Nod in the bible. I thought it was to do with Noddie from Enid Bligton and going to have a good sleep after a story.

borntobequiet · 22/12/2018 01:14

There’s a (South) Holland in Lincolnshire.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 22/12/2018 01:30

You can also get road crossings with horses in mind - there’s a push button higher up the pole for the rider. It’s called a Pegasus crossing.

Notwiththeseknees · 22/12/2018 01:32

What about Gibraltar?

echt · 22/12/2018 01:49

Does anyone else remember Adam Adamant

I remember it well, the peerless Gerald Harper:

A very Bond-influenced theme song.

brizzledrizzle · 22/12/2018 01:57

That it's not an island, it's always on his kind of thread

I was once at ten pin bowling, wondered to the other half why it was called ten pin bowling..... because there is ten pins 🙄. It’s been brought up many times since

LemonBeachTowel · 22/12/2018 07:48

A lot of these are not true and the type of nonsense people put on FB saying “I can’t believe I never knew that” of course you didn’t. It isn’t true!

BlancheM · 22/12/2018 08:09

...Like the ring-pull on cans of pop are supposed to be pushed round to cover the hole as it turns into a straw holder.
Or that the paper sauce holders in mcDs are meant to be pulled open to fit more sauce in!
