60,000 cases of measles in Europe in the last 12 months.

72 deaths.

Preventable.

OP posts:

Get off your high horse

FadedRed · 21/12/2018 18:55

As well as the deaths, there will be many children permanently damaged by having had measles: hearing loss, brain damage and respiratory damage for starters, also families who now have to live with this needless loss of children/siblings etc. Awful.

Lemoneeza · 21/12/2018 18:56

Sad. I just don't know what can be done to make them see sense though.

Starlight456 · 21/12/2018 18:56

Why should she . Very valid point I think

Nissemand · 21/12/2018 18:58

72 deaths is very low given the population of Europe.

And even vaccinated people can become ill/die.

Stephisaur · 21/12/2018 18:58

That’s awful :(

Mrskeats · 21/12/2018 18:59

72 is too many
You would think it was a problem if it was your child

Surfskatefamily · 21/12/2018 19:00

Crazy, youd think a proven medicine that stops killer diseases would be taken up by all. I dont understand anti-vaxxers

NotACleverName · 21/12/2018 19:02

OP makes a valid point, InSpace. Unless you're unable to do so for medical reasons, there's no excuse for not vaccinating your child.

Soubriquet · 21/12/2018 19:02

buzz feed link on dumbest things anti-vaxxers say

Unless you genuinely can’t be vaccinated I don’t get why people refuse

flamingofridays · 21/12/2018 19:04

72 deaths is low considering the population or Europe but 0 is lower.

The key word here is preventable

If you could (fairly easily) prevent deaths, why wouldnt you?

Soubriquet · 21/12/2018 19:04

I always find it amazing they refuse vaccines cos “of big pharma” yet will happily go to the doctors/hospital for their medication. Guess who makes that?

GummyGoddess · 21/12/2018 19:05

They refuse because they would rather have a dead child than an autistic one like me.

When that is said to them they massively backpedal but that is what they are saying. They would rather risk death than autism because they believe the stupid stories about it.

LeafCutterAnt · 21/12/2018 19:07

Ha ha at 9 and 10 from that buzzfeed link Grin

MummySharkDoDo · 21/12/2018 19:08

The case I read locally was in a vaccinated child, as I would guess others are.
Considering also the level of immigration with unvaccinated people, that’s also a factor. Also many older people won’t have had boosters and vaccines may have worn off, further adding to lack of herd immunity.
I know in Ukraine where we have family cases went up in our region after the re-started vaccination.
It’s a more complex argument than ‘blame the anti-vaxxers’, people need to stop not-picking each other constantly

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 21/12/2018 19:08

It's the tone of the post that's annoying. All my children are vaccinated by the way, but vaccination is a choice. If people choose not to vaccinate because of the perceived risks of vaccination, then they should not be persecuted for it. Also, many children contract measles even when they have been vaccinated.

NationalShiteDay · 21/12/2018 19:08

Anti-vaxxers are the most stupid people

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/12/2018 19:10

And even vaccinated people can become ill/die.

Yes but in outbreaks it it overwhelmingly completely or partly unvaccinated people that contract measles. And those that are vaccinated tend to be less ill.

This is an issue created entirely by people who decided not to vaccinate their children. It wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

Mishappening · 21/12/2018 19:10

Don't get me started on this! I feel like dragging them round a Victorian graveyard to count the children and babies. Their mothers would have given their right arms to be able to have protected their dead children. But you can't argue with these folk. Madness.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/12/2018 19:12

If people choose not to vaccinate because of the perceived risks of vaccination, then they should not be persecuted for it.

Actually, I kind of think they should. They are choosing to put people who cannot vaccinate for genuine reasons at risk. It's a shitty irresponsible choice that harms society - noewr wrong with a little light persecution...

ImSpeakingFigurativelyOfCourse · 21/12/2018 19:14

I had to take my 7mo DS to the gp today as he had a rash covering his torso and back.
Turns out he could have measles, although gp can’t be sure because he’s not got many other symptoms.

Never bloody occurred to me that he could have measles, and it scares me that he could develop complications which could be really serious.

I feel so guilty and angry that he’s been exposed to this Sad

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 21/12/2018 19:14

I see what you mean itsallgoingtobefine but unfortunately we live in a society with a lot of stupid people in it. Vigilante-ism is not a good idea.

MummySharkDoDo · 21/12/2018 19:15

The GP is meant to swab if they suspect measles, it’s a notifiable disease

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 21/12/2018 19:16

And it should also be remembered that the vast majority of measles cases do NOT develop serious complications
