Muriell walking past her Mum in “Muriel’s Wedding” and then the happy photo of her her they find afterwards. Just one of many.

Nobody has mentioned My Dog Skip yet! If anyone makes it to the end of that with dry eyes they have literally no heart. The scene where he's in the vets, and the one where he's old and struggling, and the one where he's died? Bloody hell that film just about broke me!

Also the film Fluke. Another dog one. It's not massively well known I don't think but it's marketed as being a family film. I think most children would be scarred for life, as I was.

And yes, Titanic. The most upsetting original scene was cut out - the one where Cora and her family are trapped and drowning. Absolutely horrifying. The saddest one left in has to be Rose hoarsely whispering 'Jack!' as she sees the light from the boat.

And the last episode of Six Feet Under where they show how every main character 'ends'. With the exception of poor Keith, they all live reasonably long lives and die of natural causes but it's such a perfect closure to the end of a show.

MrsJoker · 12/12/2018 20:51

The end of Philadelphia, where the family are playing videos of Andy as a child. It almost destroys me every time I watch.

TheVanguardSix · 12/12/2018 20:51

Oh yes, as mentioned The English Patient! When Almásy carries K out of the cave. Such a sweeping, gorgeous, heart-breaking scene.

The beginning of Up.

And Inside Out, so many scenes.
My kids look at me during the scenes they know make me cry! I now have an audience!

There’s this Korean film called Poetry about an elderly grandmother who is taking a poetry course and struggling with it as she’s slipping into Alzheimer’s. Meanwhile she’s also dealing with her teenage grandson’s involvement in the gang rape of a girl who ends up committing suicide. The film ends with her reciting a poem she’s written to the girl her grandson raped. I think it’s the most powerful ending of a film I’ve ever seen. My heart cracked.

Ginger in Black Beauty

When Bobby says "Daddy! My Daddy!" in the Railway Children. Gets me every flipping time

The end of Black Adder goes Forth. The men going over the top fading into a field of poppies

When Snape dies in the last Harry Potter film (And the part "Always")

These every time.

Jarviscockup · 12/12/2018 20:55

When the horse dies in The Never-ending Story.

Highginx · 12/12/2018 20:55

Marley and Me: You’re a good dog. As he’s dying!

LittleSwede · 12/12/2018 20:56

Moana, when she's lost her confidence and her granny's spirit comes back and sings to her.

Mamma Mia, Slipping through my fingers. I cry my eyes out every time.

Dr Zhivago, the bus scene.

The Outsiders, the Nothing Gold can Stay scene.

The first of the new Star Trek films, when Kirk's dad dies at the same time as Kirk is born. Bawl every time

Not so high above the eyebrow perhaps but can't think of any other examples now.

crappygilmore · 12/12/2018 20:58

I never cry at Denny's death in GA. My sob's are waiting for the musical one. The lady who plays Callie has an amazing voice and she sings to her unconscious self in such a passionate way. Then at the end of season 14 they play it again. It kills me. Also the reoccurance of the song chasing cars even in Spanish it sends tears a flowing.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 12/12/2018 21:00

Bigstripey oh no, you’ve reminded me of Hachi now! Sad

Stylinson · 12/12/2018 21:05

Many episodes of Offspring. I properly sob at a few things (don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it. Watch it. It’s brilliant.

TheLastNigel · 12/12/2018 21:05

Lord, all of jack and Sarah really.

BigStripeyBastard · 12/12/2018 21:06

Sorry Judas I honestly don't know why I participate in these threads.
For future reference, there is a great website called Does The Dog Die and will tell you in advance if the movie you are about to enjoy contains an upsetting animal demise.
I can happily watch humans pretending to tear seven shades of shite out of each other, man, woman and child. Show me an inferred pet death and I'm scrabbling for the remote and hiding behind a cushion. 😁

2ducks2ducklings · 12/12/2018 21:12

@PuppyMonkey That scene in Dumbo makes my heart physically ache. To be a mom separated from her baby like that seems torturous. I adore the song though.

WingsofaDragonfly · 12/12/2018 21:13

The Road, pretty much all of it, if you haven’t seen it don’t watch it, took me weeks to get over and I don’t cry easily.

Todayillbebetter · 12/12/2018 21:13

The Great Gatsby - You can't turn back time and Gatsby says "why of course you can"

Im always a wreck when people lie to themselves to self preserve. Otherwise they know they would die. It's like a person's final defence.

Graphista · 12/12/2018 21:13

"Caitlins death in NCSI but worse was Zivas" I've seen up to ziva leaving that was bad enough! I'm struggling to find somewhere to catch up on NCIS as its now way ahead of me on 5 I think Tony's now left too?

Father of the bride 2 - when they're giving birth & especially when Nina & baby aren't doing so good and it has to be emcs.

"Kit when she said, take care of you" I find that scene so moving. I would have LOVED to have written a pretty woman sequel, I'd have had them go to viviennes home town, viviennes's mother be quite an acerbic type like Shirley MacLaine in terms of endearment or grace zabriskie in officer & a gentleman. Disapproving of Edward initially, viv stuck in the middle trying to deal with them both, then as she gets to know him coming around and have the wedding as a finale.

GrubbyHipsterBeard · 12/12/2018 21:14

@crappygilmore yes that musical episode in Greys is incredible

myhamsteratefreddiestarr · 12/12/2018 21:19

PS I Love You, the bit where she’s singing and imagining him there

Casualty , baby Harry 😢
Casualty, after Geoff dies when Dixie walks into the department and they all look at her and Tamsin breaks down

North and South, when Orry returns at the end and the house is on fire “you’re gonna he a grandmomma momma” but she’s gone

Friends , when Monica proposes to Chandler

My Sisters Keeper

Marley and Me. I used to do a “phoebes grandmother” and turn off before the end if young DD was watching it

Cold Feet, when Rachel dies 😢

Soldier Soldier “not my Tone”

so many more! I’m far too emotional Grin

myhamsteratefreddiestarr · 12/12/2018 21:20

OH, and the new Dumbo trailer made me cry too 😂😢

Hels20 · 12/12/2018 21:25

The end of the Elephant Man.

The last scene in galipoli - so powerful and Mel Gibson’s finest film.

Rhett walking out of Scarlett in Gone With the Wind.

Breaking the Waves - I think I cried solidly.

NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten · 12/12/2018 21:26

Brooklyn 99. The episode where Ross comes out as Bisexual and her parents cancel "family game night" because they can't accept her sexuality and the whole squad shows up for family game night instead!

Scenes in Films or TV that still break your heart
FuckBrussel · 12/12/2018 21:32

Yy to the execution of John Coffey in The Green Mile. "I'm sorry for what I am..."
And the end of Marley and Me.

Also, in House, the death of Wilson's girlfriend, and in a later episode House's expression as he looks at Wilson's cancer scan on the screen.

Robin2323 · 12/12/2018 21:32

The final scene between Delen and Sheridan in B5
'The brightest star in my sky' 😪
When Sun and Kim died in Lost
After all they been through.,.,

MrsFassy · 12/12/2018 21:32

@Graphista it's on 5USA every evening 7-9 I think, two episodes and is heading to the end of the season after Ziva left.
