How many staggeringly good looking people do you know in real life?

Just following on from my 'oh my god I've just discovered Richard Armitage' thread (and do watch North and South if you have not already done so!). Musing on how gorgeous he is got me thinking.

How many really good looking people do you know in real life? I'm not talking 'eye of the beholder' type beauty, but real, classical, can't argue with it beauty (male or female)? There's a girl works in our office who I think is just beautiful - she always looks so glamorous without being showy or too made up, long blond hair with a slight curl. Very elegant. She makes everyone else look like saggy puddings. And she's probably very nice too (doesn't work in my section, it's a big place).

It made me think how very few people I know or even see like this on a daily basis - most people are just very average looking (myself included!). I can't remember the last time I saw a really handsome man. I do remember a chap I saw across a bar when I was about 22, with the most amazing cheekbones. He was just beautiful. Not in a fancying kind of way, just in a 'I could look at you for hours' kind of way. But I genuinely can't think of any since. Plenty of men I have found sexy but that's different, the two don't always overlap.

I'm probably not explaining myself very well. Maybe I just move in the wrong circles! Maybe they are all celebrities these days.

Olivander that is definitely true re ‘photogenic-ness’. I am probably a 7.5/10. 8 if I’ve got my face on. I get attention out and about blah blah (not that I want or invite it) but I look weird, lopsided and awkward in photographs. [shrug].

I think people who mention their or someone else's children as stunning cannot do it unless their children are post puberty(then say my adult DD/DS), children change so much.

My sister's DD2 between the ages of 5 and 13 was strikingly beautiful. People commented all the time. She actually couldn't let her walk to school by herself because men would start following her 😶. Anyway, by 13 she had a massive growth spurt and started stooping to conceal her height, and also she suddenly grew a nose 🤔 I mean she obviously had a nose already, and it's not like it became massive, it became slightly bigger and ever so slightly turned, and she's still very attractive, but this haunting otherworldly quality disappeared. To be honest we are all relieved for her own and her two sisters' sake, who were growing up feeling ugly constantly listening to how beautiful their sister is(they started commenting on feeling inferior when still little, obviously family and friends knew not to go on about it, but others did)

Something similar happened to DH's half brother (13 years younger). He wasn't striking as my DN, but extremely handsome but then in puberty grew a proper massive nose :) It changed his face from a model's face to just a nice manly looking face.

That's why nearly everyone in Hollywood and many other celebs had a rhinoplasty, including, if you believe rumours and before and after pictures Brad Pitt and Scarlet Johansson. It's small tweaks usually, not Michael Jackson's job. It's like a small tweak in my DN's face was enough to turn her from heavenly to ordinary (though still very pretty), the same can be done in the opposite direction.

Isayeichnotheich · 14/12/2018 13:23

When I first saw Cillian Murphy I was sure his face was a result of plastic surgery, he looks unnatural though beautiful, but apparently not, it's his real looks. I'd like to see his kids :)

But famous examples of rhinoplasty, and going from slightly peasant looking to sophisticated are, I guess, Bella Hadid, Danni Minouge, maybe Cher (though to me she looked beautiful with her real nose, but undoubtedly more Middle Eastern). Kardashian as well ...

Isayeichnotheich · 14/12/2018 13:27

Chestergrey I don't know who he is but he is beautiful, I agree. I think I understand others who are creeped out because he's very intense in his looks.

Katekat - the link is just to the picture of Robert Redford

thighofrelief · 14/12/2018 13:31

What is photogenic though, how does it change a look? I know a plain woman who looks stunning in photos, and they're snaps, not lighting and makeup.

Inadays · 14/12/2018 13:39

My DSDs. One has recently got a modelling contract and is sooo photogenic it’s ridiculous. The other is stunningly beautiful in a natural, pretty way. They are both tall, slim with perfect figures and have heavenly, peachy skin. They’ve never had a spot between them (they’re 18 & 20). Nature has been v kind to them, and I just make sure that I avoid being photographed next to them. I look like the family hobbit in comparison!

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 14/12/2018 13:51

thigh, I have no idea. It’s weird though. Camera lenses do distort images slightly. That old adage of ‘the camera never lies’ is BS but I must have the sort of face that gets especially distorted on photos. I’m not particularly symmetrical in the face dept, so I think that probably doesn’t help with photos.

BlueStockingUK · 14/12/2018 14:00

Just myself. My husband and my children ...

canigetaliein · 14/12/2018 14:28

I think Angelina Jolie is beautiful, she’s a rare combo of sexy & elegance but she’s a little thin.

One of DS's school teaching assistants is devastatingly hot! I mean "for the love of god man you've been photoshopped surely!?"
30 something, stacked, amazing hair, shirts that cling in every single right place.....

But - after hearing about how he loves living at home with his mum and sometimes he goes home at lunch to give his cat a hug.... he's less appealing .....

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 14/12/2018 15:03

I once stood next to Claudia Schiffer whilst having a fag break at work - I had no idea it was her but just stared at this utter ethereal beauty for 5 minutes (she wasn’t smoking I should add), properly otherworldly. Only realised it was her when I went back into the office and everyone said, “oh yeah, that’s Claudia” - turned out her husband (and Guy Ritchie’s) production company was above us. God knows why I didn’t know as I’d worked there for a while and it was a tiny building.

thighofrelief · 14/12/2018 18:05

I think young Kate Moss was very beautiful but only in a way that appeals to other women.

Jennifer Aniston - if we had a personal chef, trainer, hairdresser, stylist - is achievable. That's just hard work, massive funds and a nose job.

Ollivander84 · 14/12/2018 18:09

@thighofrelief I look like a double chin potato in RL. I have that imposter thing with one day I will turn up to a shoot and they'll ask where the model is Grin

thighofrelief · 14/12/2018 18:29

Ollibander with me it's the mirror. It tells terrible lies about me. I look great until I look in the mirror and this hag looks back at me. When I was about 13 and had short hair i was on a very long flight and very tired. I went to the loo and nearly died of fright that there was a weird boy in there staring at me. It was my reflection.

Ollivander84 · 14/12/2018 18:32

I took this to remind people even the model doesn't look like the model after a 12hr shift with no makeup Grin
(It's a canvas made from a photo of me for a studio)

Lol Ollivander, I'm going to watch out for you in Vogue from now on. Is it fun modelling? When I was getting told to put my foot and arm this way and that by the wedding photographer i was bored. But getting hair and makeup done would be nice. Can you wear the makeup in the street or is it crazy heavy?

Ollivander84 · 14/12/2018 18:53

Sometimes fun, sometimes hard work. Depends on the photographer a lot, it's easier if you've worked with them before
Posing is hard, if it hurts and feels uncomfortable then it looks good in a photo!
Makeup - sometimes. I did a black swan shoot that no way I could leave with that on Grin but most of it would work for a night out. I did my own makeup for that photo

thighofrelief · 14/12/2018 19:09

Paris Hiltons posing is hilarious - she arches her back so much she looks insane. I saw this programme re the makeover of Hillary Clinton and they always got her to raise her hand really high in a wave so the photographer was forced to shoot high and cut out her fat arse. I walk down the street holding a large helium balloon now to draw the eye upwards.

thighofrelief · 14/12/2018 19:11

Ollivander - i read about a GP who had such a bad imposter complex that she retook her medical exams.

thighofrelief · 14/12/2018 19:13

Have you met any famous models and thought - well you're not all that.

Ollivander84 · 14/12/2018 19:15

Not any mega famous ones - I'm plus size so not really my scene! I've met a load of plus size ones and people that model for a living and they've all been really lovely bitches Grin
I fit it in between my main job but I'm experienced enough to charge a decent rate now after a couple of years hard work

thighofrelief · 14/12/2018 19:18

Well I shall look out for you in my next catalogue delivery from The Fat Shop (Evans) Grin

Ollivander84 · 14/12/2018 19:21

I'm doing a workshop soon which should be good. Photographer is teaching other photographers about boudoir photography but needed someone who isn't size 6/8/10 to show posing issues (for stomach or things people are conscious about)
I'm 5ft 10 but a size 16 so that's helpful for him

Belindabauer · 14/12/2018 19:55

Yes I had a fling with a guy when I was in my 20s and he was beautiful. His skin was like porcelain I've never met anyone else with such a beautiful face.
His eyes were blue but very dark and shiny.
It didn't last as he knew he was attractive and all the women flicked to him.
