Do you like the film Love Actually?

I always cry at the beginning, when Hugh Grant is talking about love around us and the arrivals terminal at Heathrow. How the messages from people at the Twin Towers were all messages of love and not hate 😭

But I feel somewhat stabby at Miss Knightly saying "I look quite pretty" - Well of course you do, you're a bloody actress/model.

I adore Alan Rickman, even though he was a fool.

I love Colin Firth, and Billy Mack the rockstar makes me chuckle.

Emma Thompson (obviously).

Roman Atkinson, he helped the boy get through security. I didn't notice that before.

All my in laws say it's rubbish Grin they are not in my good books

This Year's Love. That had Dougie Henshall in it didn't it? I remember it was filmed at the bottom of the street where DH lived. I liked that film.

Watching on Netflix now - got distracted earlier so have "rewound" (what's the correct word when it's not actually a vhs tape but a virtual entity? God I'm old) and am rewatching. Just at the point where Emma Thompson is calming herself after her realising her husband is a cheating bastard (get yourself on mn love! We'll sort you out!) even if he is played by the much missed, adorable Alan rickman (anyone noticed he basically owns Christmas movie wise now? Being in this and die hard - which unfortunately sky have commandeered this year - might be reckless and buy on Amazon to watch Xmas day - gotta be done!)

What would we call all the different types of "love" in the film?

Juliet, Peter and mark - married love, unrequited love.

Jamie & Aurelia - love at first sight?

Harry & Karen - betrayed love

David & Natalie - love across the classes

Sam and Joanna - first love

Daniel & Joanna - bereaved/lost love

Daniel & carol - healing love

Sarah & Michael - sibling love

Sarah & Karl - missed love

Colin, Tony & the American Girls - polyamory?

John & judy - new love

Billy & Joe - platonic love.

I had my own "Emma Thompson moment" that same year as it happens.

I didn't see the film till a few years later, but that scene reminds me of a time I saw her scarf appear in his coat pocket when he'd supposedly been out on a stag do, I was biding my time - on advice from relatives and divorce lawyer, until I had definite proof of the affair. But this meant I had to not show how I felt when I saw this.

...Eventually led to the revelation he was shagging a mutual friend who was also his colleague.

"That reaction is not realistic" you ever actually been in a similar situation? I strongly suspect the reason it's such a beloved scene is precisely because many HAVE been and can relate.

I would quite happily watch ANYTHING with Laura linney in. I almost included Alan rickman but eye in the sky is dreadful!

Have to agree "about time" is a much better film though.

PollyFlinderz · 22/12/2018 04:21

I love it.

RedDwarves · 22/12/2018 04:38

I've just watched it for the first time. I did enjoy it. I'll add it to my annual Christmas movie rotation (National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation still wins the day though).

whatevermaycome · 22/12/2018 05:09

There was only a 4 year age gap between Keira Knightly and the little boy that lost his mum.

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/12/2018 05:15

Used to love it, then I became Emma Thompson's character and have never been able to watch it since. I agree that saying her reaction is unrealistic could only come from someone who either has never been in that situation, or refuses to accept that other people react differently to them.

XmasHolly · 22/12/2018 07:50

Don't think I've ever seen it, might have caught glimpses but can't recall it.

CarolDanvers · 22/12/2018 08:06

Yes I have been in that situation, many times actually with an ex H who cheated repeatedly. I still don't think it's particularly realistic. I think women (especially MNetters for some reason) like to think they'd react like that but most wouldn't and I really hate the idea that quiet dignity in the face of such shabby treatment is THE reaction to aspire to. Agree with the pp who said that yet again it's making women responsible for men's behaviour. I see this insistence on quiet dignity on MN constantly and I actually think it's quite damaging.

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/12/2018 16:28

I didnt say it was a reaction aspire to, but when one has young children in the house and you have just made a discovery like that, what else is there?

I had a similar reaction when it was my daughters birthday and I found the secret phone, quite by chance. Should I have fallen apart, stormed out, screamed and shouted? All of which would have ruined her birthday. So I "straightened the covers" and held it together until such time I could do all the above. ET;s character bringing itup at that school play was relatable too. She needed to say something as it was buring her up inside, but again she couldnt just lose her shit.

Madcatmolly · 22/12/2018 17:09

I liked most of it except the foul mouthed bit by Martine McCutcheon when she was looking for her coat. I hate to see foul language used in front of children. I can say fuck etc as well as the next but it’s not on when children are there.

Rockbird · 22/12/2018 17:59

Watching it now. Don't mind any of it but I cannot bear the kid singing at the end. Kids singing, fab. Kids singing love songs like grown ups. Yuck. Other than that it's ok.

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 18:15

I think it's a total marmite film

I haven't watched it for a while wonder if I'm a lover or hater? Used to be a lover but then I used to not be a Scrooge 😂

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 18:16

Gonna watch it and see!

flumpybear · 22/12/2018 18:40

I love horror films and thrillers etc ... hate cartoons and rarely watch things associated with kids like grinch, Cinderella etc ... only really st the cinema where I can't escape to do the dinner

Don't do romantic cheesy films but LOVE this film! My favourite Chrissy film! Saying that I also like four weddings and about a boy ... a bit of Brigette jones too ..... perhaps ina really DO like Hugh Grant ...... even though I think I don't ShockHmm

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 19:25

Ooh enjoying it so far (it's on Netflix this year if anyone didn't know)

Unlike my ASDA curry 😢 literally the worst korma of my life and vegetable biryani a close second...
