Do you like the film Love Actually?

I always cry at the beginning, when Hugh Grant is talking about love around us and the arrivals terminal at Heathrow. How the messages from people at the Twin Towers were all messages of love and not hate 😭

But I feel somewhat stabby at Miss Knightly saying "I look quite pretty" - Well of course you do, you're a bloody actress/model.

I adore Alan Rickman, even though he was a fool.

I love Colin Firth, and Billy Mack the rockstar makes me chuckle.

Emma Thompson (obviously).

Roman Atkinson, he helped the boy get through security. I didn't notice that before.

All my in laws say it's rubbish Grin they are not in my good books

It seems to be one of those films that is terribly divisive.

Some people talk about it like it was supposed to be some hard hitting documentary. I really don't think it was ...

redexpat · 05/12/2018 06:19

"Thank you Ant or Dec" makes me giggle.

jillytots · 05/12/2018 07:02

I'm confused, who is Alan Rickmansworth actually so mesmerised

Alan Rickmansworth! GrinGrinGrin

The film is so terrible but I kind of have to watch it and shout at it while drinking baileys and wrapping presents as some kind of Christmas tradition.

jillytots · 17/12/2018 07:23

Ha laura linney's beanie hat at the wedding always bothers me!

madeyemoodysmum · 17/12/2018 07:25

I like it but I hate the Keira storyline too a lot!! It ruins the film for me.

RedForShort · 17/12/2018 08:30

Like the stupidity of it for differing reasons:

hugh Grant / Martina Mc - unrealistic stupid with comedy scenes slapped on.
Old rocker / manager - just general stupidness.
Colin F / Portuguese woman - daftness of subtitles.

Pointless and wouldn't make any odds if it weren't there:
Martin thingie / Joanne page: just too sex is something to snigger at, schoolboy idea (and like a shoe it to get a pair of tits on show)
Dopey guy goes to America has a fiveway - same pathetic schoolboy pathetic sex story line
K knightly and egg/Rick - just no. Plus she's an awful actor

I don't know how I feel about the Liam/step-son story. It's just so clumsy. Why add any unrealistic plot to it. It could have done well as one one the more serious couple. A step-dad/step-son relationship. (I'm guessing it's because that wouldn't involve a female to decorate.)

Emma/Alan and Canadian bother and sister are well acted and unhappy. Odd they are in such a daft film. Feel out of place.

That said I do watch it if it's on and I catch it. In fact watched it the other day when I was ill. Admittedly drifted in and out of sleep during it.

TomPinch · 17/12/2018 08:30

It's a totally retrograde film, but I really, really doubt that a woke remake would be the slightest bit successful.

Love Colin's American adventure. It's just too ridiculous. And there is an irony being demonstrated on this thread considering that he has to get away from the UK to find romance...

Also love the "let's get pissed and watch porn" scene.

E20mom · 17/12/2018 08:52

Keira knightly ruins it.

Bunbunbunny · 17/12/2018 09:13

Hate it

CarolDanvers · 17/12/2018 09:18

It’s watchable but I really dislike how the Emma Thompson role is held up as a wonderful example of a dignified wife and mother on here. That reaction is not realistic and certainly not one to aspire to.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 17/12/2018 09:20

I love it. I always watch it when I see it on tv and never get bored of it.

wendywoopywoo222 · 17/12/2018 09:21

I've never watched it.

In case anyone missed this..

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 17/12/2018 10:50

It's awful, but I still watch it every year Confused

The scene when Hugh Grant and Martine McCutceon first meet when she swears and makes a tit of herself "oh piss it" is the worst! I actually have to fast forward that bit. Seriously awful.

I like the music and the Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman storyline, but that's about it.

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 17/12/2018 10:53

Carol, I know what you mean, but that scene in the bedroom, with Joanie Mitchell playing and Emma Thompson crying, really gets to me and is the best scene of the film, imo.

KurriKurri · 17/12/2018 11:57

Am I the only person in the world who has never seen it ?

Fadingmemory · 17/12/2018 12:01

It is naff, simplistic & lacks any reality but I like it for those reasons.

UnapologeticallyUnhinged · 17/12/2018 14:13

Hate with a passion. All the women depicted are either undesirable nags or walking vaginas.

I'll get my coat.

kenandbarbie · 17/12/2018 17:13

What year was the comic relief update?

kenandbarbie · 17/12/2018 17:14

I watched it again yesterday because of this thread!! Love it!!!

nottakingthisanymore · 17/12/2018 17:42

It is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen. Thought I’d love it because of the cast but I didn’t. It’s rubbish.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 17/12/2018 18:51

Kurri, I've not seen it. I've seen clips and that's enough to tell me I'll hate it. Similarly Titanic.

Meralia · 17/12/2018 19:06

No, it’s fluffy crap. I much prefer ‘this years love’, so much more realistic and the acting is fantastic (especially Kathy Burke).
