Do you like the film Love Actually?

I always cry at the beginning, when Hugh Grant is talking about love around us and the arrivals terminal at Heathrow. How the messages from people at the Twin Towers were all messages of love and not hate 😭

But I feel somewhat stabby at Miss Knightly saying "I look quite pretty" - Well of course you do, you're a bloody actress/model.

I adore Alan Rickman, even though he was a fool.

I love Colin Firth, and Billy Mack the rockstar makes me chuckle.

Emma Thompson (obviously).

Roman Atkinson, he helped the boy get through security. I didn't notice that before.

All my in laws say it's rubbish Grin they are not in my good books

I think I’m watching a different film. It’s all the flaws and crap that make it for me. And make it British over American. None of its perfect. And yes Emma is far and away the best, that’s a lot of people’s reality. You know that Prime minister is going to be torn to shreds for the panto fiasco. No way the best friend can keep his obsession secret, it’ll destroy the marriage or the friendship, Colin Firth’s marriage will be a disaster, the poor lady with the dependent brother already sacrifices her happiness and the stupid twerp cant make accommodations. But the point is everyone is trying to be in love. Trying to be happy. And the little boy succeeds. Which is the worst part for me. I hate anything that encourages children to be “in love”. But I get it’s meant to be hopefull.

Do people in New York feel like this when they see their town on film?

Not a NY dweller, but I have come across people talking about several films in terms of "it's set in New York, but the whitest New York you've ever seen!"

Doilooklikeatourist · 04/12/2018 09:59

Love it , especially Billy Mac,
Dont buy drugs children , become a famous rock star , and you get them for free !
Ant or Dec 👍

GrumpyOldMare · 04/12/2018 09:59

Am I the only one that's never seen it?

Conventicle · 04/12/2018 10:02

The bit where Emma opens the present is so realistic, you can feel your own gut being kicked, as every woman alive knows what it feels like to be cheated on.

What an odd statement. No, they don't, any more than they know what it's like to be be perved over by your husband's best friend with a boom box and a stack of index cards, or to move to the UK because a man whose house you used to clean and with whom you've never had a proper conversation has proposed to you.

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 04/12/2018 10:02

Really hate it. Emma Thompson's acting is phenomenal, but it's a bloody awful film (and I love schmaltz and corny films). As pps have said, the gender politics alone are disgraceful.

The Holiday on the other hand...

Silkie2 · 04/12/2018 10:03

I find Richard Curtis films a bit of a pastiche. Somehow the sets aren't that believable, acting a bit OTT. I read that British film making grew from the theatre whereas American grew from silent movies. That would explain it to me. It's like everyone is playing a part.
Ok I know they are in US movies but you aren't aware of the fact in the same way.

Clawdy · 04/12/2018 10:03

Loved the update on all the characters, think it was Comic Relief last year, pretty amazing that virtually all the stars returned to film it! Happy endings for most of them which was nice!

Enko · 04/12/2018 10:04

@crimbobimbo
Don't like the story with the woman whose brother calls all the time.

I always thought it was a shame they cut the scene of their relationship where she goes to see him as I think it explains just why she loves her brother so well. to me it gives an interesting twist i how love works its not always romantic love.

I like it well enough but it's not a go to for me. dont recall when I last watched it

Yutes · 04/12/2018 10:12

They cut a story about Bernard’s (Alan Rickmans son in the film) teacher and her partner who had cancer. And also a story where we saw the people in the advert they kept showing (at the company Alan Rickman worked at).

And Rowan Atkinson was supposed to disappear at the airport because he was an angel (trying to get people to do the right thing).

I still love it though. The Holiday, not so much.
Love Actually is one of those ensemble cast films that’s cheesy and ridiculous but you come away feeling kind of nice.

Patroclus · 04/12/2018 10:41

What happened to Kris Marshall? He was my 2nd favourite Strelnikov then either Love Atually or the BT adverts destroyed him.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 04/12/2018 10:51

I like the film in general but Keira Knightley running up to her secret admirer/stalker and kissing him was irritating,in fact she is irritating full stop.

twosoups1972 · 04/12/2018 11:02

Kris Marshall's character was the best! The bit where they're comparing how they pronounce words.

'Bottle'
'Same'

Patroclus he was in the original series of My Family - loved his character in that too.

DaphneduM · 04/12/2018 11:03

It's up there as one of my absolutely favourite films. I watch it every Christmas. Already watched The Holiday, another fabulous film, that I watch every year. I think both of these films capture quirky British humour with pathos - a difficult balance to achieve. My other go-to film is Leap Year - it's definitely a 'love it or loathe it' film (non Christmassy) but amazing performances from Matthew Goode and Amy Adams. Again that balance between humour and emotion. Also beautiful Irish scenery which always brings back so many happy memories of holidays in Ireland. Also I think all these three films have great musical scores. Pure escapism!!!!!!! (Oh dear, I think I might have re-watch Leap Year this afternoon, while my other half's out!!!).

SeaWitchly · 04/12/2018 11:10

I judge people negatively if they tell me that Love Actually is their favourite film.
This film is so shallow, deficient and unpleasant, it is an abomination to cinema and reflects badly on the cultural taste of anyone who says they enjoyed it or even just found it mildly entertaining, let alone loved it Confused

SeaWitchly · 04/12/2018 11:12

Oh X post Daphne

DaphneduM · 04/12/2018 11:16

Lol SeaWitchly - no problem -I can take a bit of constructive criticism!!!! I would add I have taught Media Studies in the past so can deconstruct any film objectively - part of the fun is suspending reality for me!!! Harmless watching to distract from life's harsh realities - not to be taken too seriously!!!!

I absolutely bloody love it. Just went to have a look for it off the back of this thread to watch while I'm ironing. Can't find it on sky cinema sadly, so it's Die Hard for me this morning now. I will find it though, it's a great film. Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman are the best things in it.

AndThereSaw · 04/12/2018 11:43

I love it.
All the negative things in the relationships and the unrealistic timeline and people with no jobs living in fancy lofts and all of that stuff aside.
Love it.
The look on Liam Neeson's face as 'Bye Bye Baby' plays.
The look on Emma Thompson's face as 'Both sides now' plays
'There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Christ?' 'Well Derr!'
'Eight is a lot of legs David'
'Who do I have to shag around here to get a chocolate biscuit?'
'Just in cases'

Onemorefireball · 04/12/2018 11:53

I like it. I always cry at "'over my dead body' 'no dear, over mine'"

Lottapianos · 04/12/2018 12:34

The look on Hugh Grant's face when his close protection officer bursts into song at the front door Grin

Hugh Grant's dancing Grin I love that scene even more since I saw an interview with Hugh Grant where he said he found it absolutely mortifying to film, and they shot the scene at around 7am and he was very much not in the mood for it!

Batteriesallgone · 04/12/2018 12:38

Yes I heard they deliberately filmed it when he wasn’t in the mood to add the right level of awkwardness haha.

kenandbarbie · 04/12/2018 12:48

I love it. Over sentimental and funny. Like a giant John Lewis ad. I am going to watch it ASAP!

Clawdy · 04/12/2018 17:29

Patroclus Kris Marshall starred in the last but one series of Death In Paradise, in the main role.
