Christmas film adoration and rant!

I love Christmas movies. They are filling my Saturdays currently (tragic).

BUT

I’m getting very hacked off with the ‘re-write history’ ones, as it inevitably seems to say that someone who chooses their career is missing out, and that a —mundane— family life is superior.

They never seem to show it the other way round. I realise that’s not Christmassy, but come on!

They have taught me a valuable lesson though. I’m still single, as I haven’t yet met Santa’s heir 😂

Big Christmas film news! A few pages ago I was whining about missing my favourite Christmas film 'Window Wonderland' on channel 5. It was not available on catch up so I've been checking every couple of days in the hope of it appearing somewhere. I have been rewarded! It is on Paramount on Tuesday at 6.15pm & 7.20pm (its split into two parts so be sure to record both!). It's about rival window dressers in a department store.

PrivateEggnog · 07/12/2018 14:31

I'm watching Season's Greetings on C5. I'm on live pause so no spoilers!! (Because obviously I've no idea how it's going to turn out Grin)

PrivateEggnog · 07/12/2018 14:32

Pie that description makes me think of The Shop Around the Corner - gorgeous film. And quite Christmassy, now I come to think of it.

Thanks piepie I've set it to record.

I watched one of my favourites this morning 'Journey back to Christmas'.. although it always annoys me that she doesn't write down the lottery numbers or smuggle back sports scores as seen in Back to the Future Smile

My ds (3) has just asked if we have a chimney. We don't, so he's asked how FC is going to get in. I've told him we will watch a film in the morning that shows how perfectly: The Santa Clause where the radiator magically changes into a fireplace. One of my favourites.

TheZeppo · 08/12/2018 00:42

That reminds me of my childhood- we didn’t have a chimney, so my parents told me they left him a key 😂

I watched Snowed Inn Christmas yesterday and actually cried. I liked the actors in that one. The guy (Andrew Walker?) is in quite a few of these types of films and he's actually rather attractive.

It does amuse me that these films are completely sexless though. One or two chaste kisses and people in their 30s with long term partners who are like siblings. I guess they are family films though...

Thanks for the recommendation about Window Wonderland Piepie , have set it to record.

Been pretty busy the last couple of days and have built up a backlog of about 6 unwatched Christmas movies. The last one I saw was absolute rubbish - Christmas With A Prince . He's a prince and she's a doctor on a children's ward. I just got so annoyed with the potholes - all the royal court have British or American or Eastern European accents. The prince's country is somewhere European but they speak Russian and send their royalty to American boarding school. The prince breaks his leg so badly he has to be a hospital in-patient, yet within a few days he is released with only a walking boot and doesn't even have to use crutches, and indeed can go to a dance! And when the doctor goes to the royal ball she wears a tiara when no one else is wearing one except royalty?? Ridiculous. And the leads had zero chemistry. Might have to go back and watch one of the better Christmas movies to get over it!

TheMadGardener · 08/12/2018 19:23

Grrr. Plotholes not potholes!

carries · 09/12/2018 16:55

I’ve just discovered this thread! I knew there had to be other people who adored cheesey, Hallmark Christmas movies! My 14 yo and 11 yo Dds and I love the Netflix Christmas movies esp the very handsome Christmas Prince! I’m now off to watch channel 5.

Thank you - you are my people!

carries · 09/12/2018 17:01

There are heaps of Christmas movies on channel 5?!?!???

barleyreed · 09/12/2018 18:40

Any recommendations for Christmassy films for a nearly 4 year old?! So looking forward to snuggling up with him and watching a film!

NancyDonahue · 09/12/2018 19:07

barleyreed the world's your oyster!

Arthur Christmas
The Snowman
Father Christmas
Polar Express
The Grinch
Muppets Christmas carol
Nativity 1/2/3

my dcs were getting onto Home Alone at that age too but preferred the animated films.

barleyreed · 09/12/2018 19:08

Thank you! A great list to work through, I can't wait!

goose1964 · 09/12/2018 23:36

I like the one with uppity interior designer boss is engaged and she gets her assistant to design his Christmas decorations and when he loves them pretends the idea is hers. However when the Dec's are being done they find they have so much in common and when he finds out it is assistant's design he dumps uppity bitch .

Totally forgotten the name though

Figmentofimagination · 10/12/2018 10:55

Goose, I think it's called a Christmas Kiss

Heuschrecke · 10/12/2018 13:42

OK, I'm watching one called My Christmas Love on Ch5 at the moment. Let's see!

But there's one on afterwards (at 3pm) called Christmas Catch which might be more fun.

Heuschrecke · 10/12/2018 14:48

Well ... I wasn't expecting that 'turn up for the books'!

NancyDonahue · 10/12/2018 14:57

A lot of these films have a creepy over friendly Santa. If a Santa addressed me by my name and asked me what I really want this year, I would run away fast!

Heuschrecke · 10/12/2018 15:07

Dang, I've missed the first 7 minutes of Christmas Catch.

tadpole39 · 10/12/2018 15:12

Christmas love was great, although the heroine was a tad over enthusiastic. Not much happened in Christmas catch first 7 mins. Terrible flirting a chase scene, telling off from the captain who’s her mother! It’s my day for films but kids home soon to ruin it!

TheMadGardener · 10/12/2018 18:39

No spoilers for My Christmas Love , I've recorded it!

Watched Mr Christmas this morning whilst decorating the tree. Quite sweet. And unusual as most of it is from the hero's POV rather than the heroine's.

Heuschrecke · 10/12/2018 18:53

Absolutely, TheMadGardener. We don't do spoilers here! I think you'll enjoy it!

PrivateEggnog · 11/12/2018 12:36

Is anyone watching Murder, She Baked: A Christmas Pudding Mystery Xmas Grin it's on C5 now (well, I'm watching on +1).

It's terrible, and I can't stop watching!
