Christmas film adoration and rant!

TheZeppo · 25/11/2018 22:40

I love Christmas movies. They are filling my Saturdays currently (tragic).

BUT

I’m getting very hacked off with the ‘re-write history’ ones, as it inevitably seems to say that someone who chooses their career is missing out, and that a —mundane— family life is superior.

They never seem to show it the other way round. I realise that’s not Christmassy, but come on!

They have taught me a valuable lesson though. I’m still single, as I haven’t yet met Santa’s heir 😂

Very off-topic from our cheesy Christmas movies, nevermorelenore, but my favourites during my terrible insomniac period were What About Brian and Being Erica.

Apologies for the derail!

BrieAndChilli · 01/12/2018 20:21

I keep looking for one tree hill to be on. We have Netflix, amazon and sky and it’s never on anything!!

nevermorelenore · 01/12/2018 20:51

Being Erica was great too. I really liked it. Think it was only one or two seasons though.

Brie - there’s an app you can get called Just Watch which allows you to search for shows and movies and see where they are streaming. At the moment, you have to buy each season via Apple Store or similar, but I keep checking to see if it is free anywhere! I always see the DVDs in charity shops but never a complete set. Sad

There's one I love with a woman who goes to a huge house to sell it and it's haunted by the ghost of a man who died there. I can't remember what it's called and I'm trying to find it as I recommended it to my sister who's as obsessed as I am by cheesy Christmas films! Help!

PerverseConverse · 01/12/2018 21:03

Christmas ghost?

PerverseConverse · 01/12/2018 21:04

The Spirit of Christmas (close!)

DMCWelshCakes · 01/12/2018 21:16

After my shit Christmas film marathon yesterday, I've not seen any today. I'm having withdrawal symptoms!

ChristmasWrappingTheWaitresses · 01/12/2018 21:25

Oh help. Being forced to watch Santa Claws by my cat loving 6 year old. It's dire thus far.

NancyDonahue · 01/12/2018 21:34

Santa Claws can't be any worse than Santa Paws. I think there's Santa Paws 2 & 3 as well.

SillySallySingsSongs · 01/12/2018 21:39

Not seen any today but will rectify it tomorrow Wink

Giraffeowlllama · 01/12/2018 22:45

I love Christmas films. So sweet romantic and unrealistic. I want to live in a US town where I'll be able to live in a huge house with cute widower and kid as either a sahp or waitress/bookshop owner after leaving my corporate job.
I'm not being cynical I love Xmas films books. And this thread has inspired me to record all the c5 films this week while I'm at work. Smile thanks

BrieAndChilli · 01/12/2018 23:18

I’m currently watching ‘poinsettias for christmas’
Typical plot - career driven woman returns home to find parents poinsettia farm is on the brink of bankruptcy. Handsome stranger farmhand on hand for initial hatred.

I’m not really sure how this film is going to end........Grin

rosenylund · 01/12/2018 23:31

If anyone is seeking something different, there is a lovely documentary I have added to my Christmas film repertoire over the last few years, I am Santa Claus, a year in the lives of five professional Santa Clauses to find out what the rest of the year is like, It's fab!

nevermorelenore · 02/12/2018 00:49

Cat loving kids will like the Grumpy Cat Christmas Movie too. Yes, I watched it.

12 Dogs of Christmas is terrible but the title always makes me laugh. It’s just so stupid.

Heuschrecke · 02/12/2018 04:02

nevermorelenore, Erin Karpluk (Being Erica) is also in Christmas Lodge!

Lisaturtle · 02/12/2018 05:26

I love the amount of running and sprinting in Christmas films. Kids sprinting in the snow without falling?! Or Dickensian kids sprinting to announce newspaper headlines to other townspeople. Grown men sprinting in long coats to either chase the love of their life or buy presents. And obviously I have to mention the Home alone airport running!

RightOnTheEdge · 02/12/2018 10:07

Thank you for the welcome Heuschrecke Grin
I really want to see the snow man one now and angels.

I watched the one the other day about the grumpy man in the big house he's selling and the woman who goes to value it.

The trouble with that one is it just left me feeling outraged.
How dare she go tidy up that rose room when the housekeeper had told her they are not allowed to be in there and he'd go mad if he found them?
And the father and that client who just assumed that she'd marry the client man and he kept grabbing her and kissing her and stuff Urgh! Angry
And then she told her Dad her heart belonged to grumpy house owner who she's only known a few weeks Hmm

I also watched one with twins who weren't speaking to each other with parents who were splitting up and she asked the man who had bought their old house who they hardly knew if they could all take over his house on Christmas Day and have a family Christmas like the old days and he said yes Grin

They are so funny. I'm having a crappy life right now and I am going to use these terrible films and this lovely thread to escape and get me through the next few weeks.

Heuschrecke · 02/12/2018 10:28

"I also watched one with twins who weren't speaking to each other with parents who were splitting up and she asked the man who had bought their old house who they hardly knew if they could all take over his house on Christmas Day and have a family Christmas like the old days and he said yes."

RightOnTheEdge. There was one on early yesterday evening called Switched At Christmas, funnily enough featuring twin sisters who didn't get on. And funnily enough one was a single 'city-high-flyer' whilst the other was a 'small town' high school teacher (I think), wife and mother - so they swapped their lives. I haven't got a clue what went on though cos DP was yapping at me!!!

A PP, upthread, mentioned the Hallmark Channel (I guess it's American). I'd never heard of it before, but loads of these cheesy films that I've Googled/IMDBd all appear to have been made by, or for, Hallmark Xmas Grin

NancyDonahue · 02/12/2018 10:36

Yes I watched the high flyer/school teacher twins one the other day. It's pretty good but as usual, you can see the ending a mile off but that's half the fun Wink

I love the really old (!) 90s ones. Some great shoulder pads and massive long camel coats.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 02/12/2018 12:50

Currently watching Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding. Thought I had seen the first one but evidently not. It doesn't matter though....I think I know the ending Grin

noodlenosefraggle · 02/12/2018 15:13

delores does it end with her not fitting into palace life because she's a common bitch who made her previously too common sil cry?

queenrollo · 02/12/2018 17:04

I love a film called Angels Sing, it has Harry Connick Jr and Willie Nelson in it.

If You Believe fits the trope of high flying, oh so serious female has her grumpiness challenged. It's one of my favourites.

A Christmas Romace with the saccharine Olivia Newton John, struggling business woman encounters city high flyer who threatens her livelihood etc.

I now have a list of new ones to watch, thanks to this thread though.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 02/12/2018 18:28

No sadly not noodles she married the King of Aldovia and became Queen of course. Grin

Oh and she foiled a corrupt official who was draining money from the country as the same time.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 02/12/2018 18:30

Christmas Chronicles is great and very funny.

Am halfway through an Angel at Christmas but am all saccharined out now, so got Countryfile on and am waiting for Doctor Who.

cricketmum84 · 02/12/2018 18:34

Ok @Heuschrecke I'm already married with children but now am in a fantasy land in a Canadian town with said single parent/widower 😂
