The price of a Costa Coffee mince pie (and other eyebrow raising prices) !

Because I am fat and don't have a sweet tooth I never have anything to eat in a coffee shop so perhaps I'm very behind the times - but aibu to be shocked that they wanted £2.20 for a mince pie in Costa yesterday? They were flogging them at the till. I'm afraid I snorted at the idea I might want to pay that for 1 mince pie (and yes I know I'm sounding like my mother).

Any prices/charges that have made you do a double-take recently?

£1.89 for a small evian at wh smith at the train station.

cjt110 · 23/11/2018 18:48

There's a new place near me. It's £6 for a bacon butty and £9 for a bit of toast with green shit on "smashed avocado" an egg and a slice of bacon... Fuck. That.

longestlurkerever · 23/11/2018 18:52

I foolishly bought a snickers at the work canteen the other day. £1.50. Jaw dropping.

There is always a lot of talk about wages having to go up but hardly ever conversation about the ridiculous cost of living. I don’t know why everyone pays these ridiculous prices.

toxic44 · 23/11/2018 19:01

I saw a chocolate brownie (quite small, maybe 5cms sq x 2.5cms high) with a small scoop of ice cream offered at £5.30. Go twiddle, I thought.

HundredMilesAnHour · 23/11/2018 19:02

I met a former colleague for a catch-up in a coffee bar in Clerkenwell today (admittedly an uber-hipster, pretentious place - but they do excellent coffee) and they were charging between £5.50 and £8.50 for ONE cup of filter coffee (price varied depending on the beans selected). Shock

Now I live in wankery-hipster central (Shoreditch to be precise) so I'm used to micro-sized coffee cups and lots of discussion about how ansd when the beans were roasted but this was a whole new level of taking the mickey. £5.50-£8.50?????!!!! For one cup?????!!!!

christmaschristmaschristmas · 23/11/2018 19:03

Where I live there are loads of these rip-off places.

But more fool me - I end up in them multiple times daily! The lure of a takeaway hot drink...

WrongKindOfFace · 23/11/2018 19:07

If cinemas charged a semi reasonable price I’d fill my boots in there. But there is no way I’m spending £28 on a bag of skittles so I’ll stick to smuggling in my Poundland goodies.

Beamur · 23/11/2018 19:10

On the flip side, my recent discovery (trying to wean myself off high calorie breakfast of yummy Nero flat whites and croissants) is the bargain of a Greggs breakfast roll. Maybe not classy, but a very decent bacon roll and a nice Americano for £2. Not the best coffee ever, but perfectly drinkable. My twice a week treat.

Beamur · 23/11/2018 19:12

Back to pricey. There's some kind of artisan caravan coffee place on the station I commute to for work. Captive audience, if I was waiting for a delayed train on a cold day I'd buy a drink, but the prices are insane. £1.70 for a bag of crisps, not a big bag either. I think I bought a coffee once before I noticed the price, never again.

Serin · 23/11/2018 19:17

National Trust coffee shop prices are terrible. 5 drinks, 3 slices of cake and 1 "cookie"? £32.
It's seldom I get stung but I still can't get over that!

Oogle · 23/11/2018 19:18

I bought a takeaway cup of tea in a Holiday Inn - Starbucks franchise. Handed over £2.20 as I thought she’d said. She held her hand out. “The 20p is there” I helpfully pointed out.

“Yes but it’s £3.20”

THREE POUNDS AND TWENTY PENCE FOR A CUP OF TEA!!!

The queue behind me all started mumbling about it being a complete rip off whilst I begrudgingly handed over the extra £1 as I had nowhere else to go for my tea.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 23/11/2018 19:23

I’m with you on that A580Hojas I too normally will only have a drink as the price for a small cake or biscuit is ridiculous. In fact I’d rather go to McDonalds for one as it’s good coffee and I like their apple pie. I’m really upset they aren’t doing their festive pie (mincemeat & custard) again this year. Absolute travesty, what are they thinking!

peonysandhotcrossbuns · 23/11/2018 19:31

Fruit Salad sweets 5p each in my local petrol station... 5P!!!

Seriously?? That's just put a dampener on my Christmas - MaccyD's pies are something I really look forward to.

Fluffyears · 23/11/2018 19:42

Husband and I went to a sweet shop in a tourist trap twin nearby. Two 99’s and a small bar of tablet (no prices up-devious)....£14.80 I just held out a tenner not comprehending why that wasn’t enough then had to dig out my card.

Pret, I love Pret but £8ish for lunch is just too much.

I’ve noticed the price of desserts in most restaurants are getting silly. Even chain places and pubs seem to charge £7.99 for the worlds smallest piece of cheesecake. It’s no wonder places like Wetherspoons do so well.

user1499173618 · 23/11/2018 19:46

Just say no to cakes/coffees/snacks when you are out. There are so many great reasons not to consume them!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/11/2018 19:49

It’s £3.85 for a piece of cake in Costa in our shopping centre, and it’s not even an actual shop, it’s an ‘open’ seating area with a counter in the middle. To be honest it makes it so easy to just say no, I’d never pay that much for a slice of cake!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 23/11/2018 20:03

I hate being ripped off....luckily i dont drink coffee so easily avoid Costa etc....
I work in a supermarket so can make hot drinks for free in the canteen....i'm constantly shocked at the amount of staff who buy their drinks from the Costa cafe instore...even with a staff discount they are still expensive.

BarbaraofSevillle · 23/11/2018 20:10

Was it Jason Manford who did the service station skit, about going in and getting sandwiches and a coke; and handed over the cash saying "sorry, only got a twenty" to which the answer was "no problem, just put the coke back

Many true a word said in jest. Friend handed over a tenner for a pint and a single G&T at a naice hotel wedding some years ago, expecting change. Barman kept his hand out, expecting just a little bit more than a tenner [Smile].

Mumsnet would have had a field day with that wedding. I was DPs plus one as it was his mate getting married to a bride who was a total princess bridezilla and then some.

Massive shiny wedding and the brides father speech included a joke, that also was nothing of the sort that paying for the wedding had forced him to see delay retirement by some years. There was a dress code that no-one told me about so I ruined all the photos I appeared in because my one nice dress was the 'wrong' colour. The bridezilla made it clear how much she hated me for this. And they separated in less than 2 years.

anotherneter · 23/11/2018 20:23

I went into an M&S food hall recently and there was a sandwich for £4. I thought that was expensive. £2.20 for a mince pie is laughable but I suppose there must be people out there who are stupid enough to pay for it.
