The price of a Costa Coffee mince pie (and other eyebrow raising prices) !

Because I am fat and don't have a sweet tooth I never have anything to eat in a coffee shop so perhaps I'm very behind the times - but aibu to be shocked that they wanted £2.20 for a mince pie in Costa yesterday? They were flogging them at the till. I'm afraid I snorted at the idea I might want to pay that for 1 mince pie (and yes I know I'm sounding like my mother).

Any prices/charges that have made you do a double-take recently?

Just stop eating out other than on special occasions at good quality privately owned restaurants. It’s really quite simple!

ToastedSandwichObsession · 25/11/2018 10:23

I only ever have a coffee in Costa, I'm way too mean to pay for their overpriced food. I don't even have that regularly.

Bus fares, god the price of bus fares. Local city are trying to reduce pollution, they want people to bus it in if local or park and ride if further away. We're local but for me, husband, adult daughter and teen son it's over £20 in bus fares and takes an hour when it's busy. Drive us all in, 20 minutes and car parking charges are far cheaper.

You could get an Uber for £20!

Public transport has to be very good quality (clean, comfortable, regular) and cheap in order for it to compensate for the relative discomfort versus a personal car.

user1499173618 · 25/11/2018 10:29

I actually like public transport as, where I live, it’s fantastic.

^^ This. The high prices of food at the cinema, cafes etc is common knowledge and it only takes a little thought and planning to avoid it if you don't want to or can't afford to spend the money.

Carrying on paying the prices and then moaning about it like you didn't realise the service station or cinema was a total rip off is a bit daft really.

Take your own sweets to the cinema. Take your own coffee, drinks and food when travelling. Or if you want to eat out, use somewhere much more reasonably priced like McDonalds, Greggs or M&S Simply Food.

It's not like the expensive options such as coffee chains, Burger King, or most airport, service station, cinema or theme park shops and restaurants sell better quality or nicer food for their high prices. It's nearly always similar stuff available.

raisedbyguineapigs · 25/11/2018 10:39

Where I live, the Oden still charges ridiculous prices, even though the Vue is £5.99 and the cheapo independent cinema is £4.99and £1.50 for popcorn. I don't know how they get away with it. The service is snail pace too!

Mumshappy · 25/11/2018 10:43

Childs brownie in chain coffee shop 3 quid! She didnt eat it all either. I will stick to greggs in future.

DH and I stopped going to Bill's for our Saturday morning treat - a nice leisurely breakfast with the papers - when they 'upgraded' to an 'exciting' new menu, i.e. removed the bacon and sausage rolls, left everything with eggs in (which we can't eat), and booted up the price for everything, especially the toast - two tiny bits of indifferently-warmed bread was £3.50.

For a while they refused to do sausage sandwiches because they'd been dropped from the menu ('yeah, everybody asks about them!' said the waiter), but graciously allowed you to order said toast plus an additional sausage as a side-order, costing additional ££, and you could make your own if you'd won the lottery

We found somewhere else to go, but I noticed the other day that the bacon & sausage rolls are back on the menu Hmm

I also recently spent £3 on a brownie only for my ds to refuse to eat it because it was too rich...ffs

I've noticed more and more establishments dropping veggie sausages and from their breakfast menu's over the past few years, yet keeping the cost the same or increasing it. Bill's veggie breakfast used to include sausage and charges £8.95 for poached eggs, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, tomato hummus, smashed avocado, sweet chilli sauce, basil and toast. It's just downright meanness.

Have to agree with that. It's no surprise that some places charge what you may regard as "rip off" prices. Luckily, as said, with a bit of forward planning you can avoid it all.

We travel a lot but wouldn't think of using a motorway service station for food, drink or fuel. We just do a bit of "googling" beforehand and make a list of supermarkets close to motorway junctions along the route. Last time, we stopped off for lunch at a Morrisons near Walsall (I think), which was within sight of the motorway. Excellent bacon/sausage buns for lunch very cheap and filled up with fuel at the same time.

Same with train stations - usually there's a mini Tesco or a Greggs or MaccyD's or similar within easy walking distance of most bigger stations, so it's madness to buy your food/drink in the station itself. Again, a few minutes googling and you can find what's close by.

In the old days before the internet and before iphones, then, yes, you were basically a captive audience on motorways and train stations, but nowadays, it takes mere minutes to google alternatives.

Yes, airports are different re the liquid prohibition, but you can still take your own food onboard, and you don't even have to buy it in the departure lounge, you can take your own packed lunch etc made at home or bought from the supermarket the day before.

formerbabe · 25/11/2018 11:41

Last time I went to the Odeon I used one of their self service machines to buy the tickets...it was so much, I pressed the back button on the screen because I assumed i had put the wrong number of tickets!

christmaschristmaschristmas · 25/11/2018 12:07

The cinema is ghastly in price. I took my 2 youngest the other day, so 2 kids tickets and 1 adult and got us all a popcorn each and a drink.....£55 later !

KaliforniaDreamz · 25/11/2018 12:08

I am always running late tho so no time to pop in to supermarket for cheap (shit) popcorn

Minniemountain · 25/11/2018 12:33

20 years ago when I was a poor student the Odeon in Bristol centre was reasonably priced. We'd get our treats from the Tesco across the road.

JemSynergy · 25/11/2018 12:43

Cinema tickets, we just don't bother to go anymore choosing to watch at home instead which I actually prefer! Theatre tickets have always been silly but even at my local touring theatre the prices seem to be getting out of control!

Sniv · 25/11/2018 13:28

It's good to read this thread. I used to live in a different city, and there seemed to be lots of places where you could stop while out in town and have something genuinely nice that seemed decent value (like a hot roasted vegetable baguette for £1.60, or a mint tea and a big bowl of falafel, humus and salad for £5). In my current city there's basically nothing that seems worth it, so I've been worried I've been growing rather mean. Whenever I'm thinking about buying myself something I know isn't worth the cash, a little old lady voice in my head goes 'a fool and her money are easily parted' and I put it back. I generally don't stop in town anymore - just tromp around to get my business done and go home.

I can afford it, technically, but I don't want all my money to be frittered away on bog standard tea, gin and sandwiches that I barely even enjoy.

Our local pantomime is about £120 for a family of four to go to.

user1499173618 · 25/11/2018 14:28

Theatre isn’t expensive - there are lots of real people who need to get paid!

southeastdweller · 25/11/2018 14:29

It is in the west end of London!

Badbadbunny · 25/11/2018 14:58

As there are in shops and cafes too! That's why it's ridiculous that people compare against raw products they could buy. Someone is employed to buy the food/drink, someone to make it, someone to serve, someone to clean, someone to manage it all - that's why it costs more when you have it made for you than making it yourself.

fussychica · 25/11/2018 14:58

We dont go to the cinema anymore and eat out rarely as it's just too expensive. When I'm in Spain I can get a very decent 3 course meal for around 12-15 euros, a coffee for 1-1.50 euros and a beer for not much more so I go out to eat and drink all the time.

When it's close to £3 just for a coffee almost everywhere in the UK these days I really appreciate my free coffee in Waitrose, even if I do have to take my own cup!

abacucat · 26/11/2018 13:14

What I resent more is paying for a meal when I could have made better myself. Lots of places the food quality is not great.
