The price of a Costa Coffee mince pie (and other eyebrow raising prices) !

Because I am fat and don't have a sweet tooth I never have anything to eat in a coffee shop so perhaps I'm very behind the times - but aibu to be shocked that they wanted £2.20 for a mince pie in Costa yesterday? They were flogging them at the till. I'm afraid I snorted at the idea I might want to pay that for 1 mince pie (and yes I know I'm sounding like my mother).

Any prices/charges that have made you do a double-take recently?

Oh and I think I go to coffee shops too often as that seems quite reasonable for a mince pie!

formerbabe · 23/11/2018 14:21

I also find wine in pubs a rip off

£7.50 for a standard sized glass of wine in my local pub Shock

In suburban, untrendy part of London.

formerbabe · 23/11/2018 14:23

And two Orange juices and two bags of crisps for my children cost more than £10 Shock

Paw Patrol toys. They are just lumps of moulded plastic and yet cost a fortune. DD wants them for Christmas Hmm

Moominfan · 23/11/2018 14:25

I paid 5.00 for one drink in Starbucks the other week and they didn't even have loo roll in the bathrooms

Stupidity surcharge GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin
Possible the best thing I've seen on MN ever!!!

Don't Pret do a mince pie and filter coffee for about £2.50 during these festive climes?
I bloody love mince pies. Had an Aldi one and an Asda one in the name of consumer research yesterday. The Aldi one won.

MrsPatmore Grin I like your style!

Paid over £7 for a pre theatre medium glass of wine last night.

Then just before paying saw that I could have had mulled wine and a mince pie for £4.85! Bugger! And bugger again!

It was the Crypt Cafe at St Martin's in the Field, and I know they do a lot of work with homeless people, so didn't begrudge it as much as I would have in a purely commercial place.

@Chouetted Scottish pounds would not allow seven of their number to be spent on a sandwich. 😁 Even one with artisan peppercorns and hand sourced flour.

DianaT1969 · 23/11/2018 14:35

A bottle of water in WH Smith at an airport.

missyB1 · 23/11/2018 14:42

Anything at airports or on the plane.

Oh and on the subject of hospital parking they are pretty much all private parking companies, they charge what they like (after all they have you over a barrel), and the money doesn’t even go back into the NHS.

StaySafe · 23/11/2018 14:43

I've really noticed this recently as I have been driving long distances to visit a sick relation. I soon stopped having a sandwich and a coffee in the motorway services when the price of that was close to £10. I know it takes a little bit of effort but now I just take something with me and make some coffee to put in my trendy new style flask. Engenders lovely feeling of smugness

£3.25 for a rooibos latte in starbucks

it's a farking cup of tea with milk fgs!

Dahlietta · 23/11/2018 14:44

Don't know what you're on about, blamethecat, that doorbell's an absolute BARGAIN. It's reduced by nearly £8000!

babybunny123 · 23/11/2018 14:45

My local café advertises everything as either homemade or locally sourced. I saw one of the ladies who works there buying everything in Aldi next door which is definitely local and saw her going back to the café with the goods. She was buying all the cheap range of cheese, bacon, sausages etc. Nothing wrong with Aldi but the café charge top whack for everything.

ImPreCis · 23/11/2018 14:46

£5.80 for a (admittedly large) sourdough loaf in our local artisan bakery.

viques · 23/11/2018 14:50

A friend went into ms and looked at the chocolate acorns they are flogging this year. She didn't buy them but assumed by the price that they must be handcrafted by highly paid fully trained red squirrels with international chocolatier diplomas.

PETROL!!

Agree, same price near me. And this isn't even the larger glasses!

However soft drinks in pubs is the biggest rip off. There's very little difference between alcoholic and non alcoholic prices. I refuse to go in a pub.

I gave my son £2 to buy a bottle of water at a train station as I’d forgotten his. When he came back, I asked how much it had cost; £1.30! I held my hand out for the change and he said he’d dropped it in the tips jar. Imagine my delight 😒

AnnieOH1 · 23/11/2018 15:13

Sorry I've got to chime in, most hospital parking charges do profit share with the trust and charges are usually formulated with a view to the hospital not having the cheapest parking in the area (and thus becoming overrun with commuters). Trusts usually put parking out to tender and it is ultimately the trust who makes the decisions not the parking company. I am in no way suggesting every hospital car park works like this.

I’m getting a right Scrooge! Wait till Sky DVD for films and get on the sofa in comfort and get a copy to give away! Nespresso account coffee pods approx 50p (still expensive) but not £2.50. I have nearly stopped buying magazines as nothing in them and I refuse to pay £4 for adverts.

flapjackfairy · 23/11/2018 15:18

I had a shock when the bill came in a restaurant chain the other day. I thought it was free refills on tea but no! I paid 4.60 for 2 teas which were just a small cup of hot water with a tea bag floating in it! Not even a pot !
Why is tea such a rip off ? . Surely a teabag is a penny or so yet tea seems to be more expensive than coffee in lots of places and in one local pub you get a little biscuit with the coffee but not the tea. What a con !
