The price of a Costa Coffee mince pie (and other eyebrow raising prices) !

Because I am fat and don't have a sweet tooth I never have anything to eat in a coffee shop so perhaps I'm very behind the times - but aibu to be shocked that they wanted £2.20 for a mince pie in Costa yesterday? They were flogging them at the till. I'm afraid I snorted at the idea I might want to pay that for 1 mince pie (and yes I know I'm sounding like my mother).

Any prices/charges that have made you do a double-take recently?

It does just feel like they're taking the piss.

user1499173618 · 23/11/2018 20:33

Yes, they are taking the piss. But no one has to consume this stuff!

southeastdweller · 23/11/2018 20:36

Well, when you're part of a captive market at a station for example and you're thirsty or hungry, it's hard not to say no!

I cant get over the number of people buying the 50p lindt balls

Protein balls cost £2

Ladygodivasroom · 23/11/2018 20:46

Isn't that what budgies eat.

Depressing to hear about hospital parking charges but not surprised.

Bottles of water in the airport WHSmith piss me off because it feels like they're cashing in on terrorism!

coffeeforone · 23/11/2018 20:49

Buses outside of London are extortionate

BarbaraofSevillle · 23/11/2018 20:56

Any time l buy water in an airport, it is about a pound for half a litre which is stupidly expensive but not that different to high Street prices but I refill my own bottle where possible, because of the plastic in the ocean, you understand Smile

For the people buying drinks all the time when your going to work etc, just get a decent flask. The Ultimate Thermos is good and will keep a coffee piping hot for 24 hours.

strumpetblowingatrumpet · 23/11/2018 21:01

The price of hospital parking is a bloody liability i agree - I was there 62 minutes the other day ((and didn't even get seen because the consultant turned up 45 minutes late for my appointment and I had to leave to collect ds from school)) and I paid £3.10 for the privilege of sitting in the bloody waiting room.

CandleWithHair · 23/11/2018 21:05

I’ve worked in London for too long. I paid £6.80 for a Vietnamese baguette today and it only occurred to me this evening how ridiculous that price was for a glorified ham sandwich Sad

makingmiracles · 23/11/2018 21:39

Yes, costa, also costa lotta money in our house, never go in there. Make a point of never having hot drinks out other than at our local softplay where you can have a delux hot choc for £2.80 with cream and marshmallows and that’s only because they are a family buisness and not a giant chain, they also allow you to take your own food and drink so big vote from me!

Never drink at pubs either other than Wetherspoons as the prices are so high, ,just can’t enjoy it when I’m sat there thinking “could of had nearly two bottles at home for the price of one glass”!!

Totally agree on hospital parking, dd had appt last summer, then we visited her friend who was in long term, we were a little over 4hrs, cost....£12 odd, then to take the mick, I sat in the car quickly scoffing down a overpriced sandwich before leaving and because i took a few mins to do that the barrier wouldn’t lift and the car park attendant wouldn’t let me out!! I had to argue the toss with him as he wanted me to pay an extra £1.50 for the couple of mins I’d overstayed since paying my parking token! I refused and as there was a queue building up behind me, he begrudgingly let me out!!

I won’t eat out anymore either, dp has a habit of saying oh let’s get some lunch if we’re out all day around payday, but just nipping to somewhere basic like Wetherspoons/hungry horse has the potential to cost £60-120 for a family of six, eyewatering when some homemade sandwich’s cost less than £5 or even shop bought pasties under £10, again, can’t really enjoy it when I’m sat there thinking that meals just cost my weekly shop!

PixelDust · 23/11/2018 21:49

coffeeforone Buses in Edinburgh are £1.70 for any distance (within lothian buses area)

Do none of you ever treat yourselves? I read this and I think what a sad existence you must have. Calling Starbucks Megabucks or Costa Coffee Cost a Lot just isn't funny.

I can not abide tight people who constantly moan at the price of things. My DMIL is the same and it is so incredibly boring. It really puts me off asking her and DFIL out to restaurants.

Sofabitch · 23/11/2018 21:55

But you're not just paying for the mince pie... you're paying for someone to serve you, clean up after you, the heating, lighting, and general facilities, rates in a high footfall area and transportation of the mince pie.

I think the problem is the opposite...we are so used to cheap goods we don't value just how much things actually cost.

spinabifidamom · 23/11/2018 22:04

I was shopping with some friends late yesterday afternoon. At some point during the shopping spree we felt peckish so we decided to stop by a popular coffee shop for a snack. A slice of cake there costs you about £3.

user1457017537 · 23/11/2018 22:07

Pixeldust what a sad existence you must have.

I don’t see it that way. I have bought my unborn grandchildren nursery furniture and gifts, treated family and friends, entertained and paid bills this week. Just different priorities.

Equimum · 23/11/2018 22:08

Cafe at local gardens wants £3.50 for a kids gingerbread man!

£6.92 for nothing!!!

dementedma · 23/11/2018 22:10

these over inflated prices will continue to exist as long as people are willing or stupid enough to pay them. you have a choice

myusernamewastakenbyme · 23/11/2018 22:15

@pixeldust...i dont need overpriced coffee to feel like ive had a treat...id rather have nice clothes and trips out with friends and family.

Getoffthetableplease · 23/11/2018 22:18

Smiggle. Everything in that bastard shop is poorly made overpriced tat imo, like crack to my littles though. £32 for two water bottles that broke after a few weeks Shock

Southwest12 · 23/11/2018 22:20

I was charged €40 for a double Hendricks and tonic at a bar in Nice. Though it was the early hours of the morning and we were all very drunk so I think maybe they just asked what they thought they could get away with.

A double G&T was almost £17 at the Hyatt in Birmingham.

Ladygodivasroom · 23/11/2018 22:28

I guess it depends on what you call a treat. I like buying books, going to the theatre, concerts and operas (occasionally, that last one!) and staying in nice places on holiday. To me those are treats, and I couldn't afford them if I was spaffing £80 a month on a daily Starbucks. Plus I don't really think having a cup of coffee is that great a treat tbh.

Bowchicawowow · 23/11/2018 22:31

I agree Ladygodivasroom.

MorrisZapp · 23/11/2018 22:36

Gorman has nailed it with the tea chat. Pret tea is borderline undrinkable, which is a travesty in the UK. If the water isn't boiling then its an exercise in futility. Depressing.

I take Sainsbury's croissants into Starbucks all the time. Fuck them.

Has anyone mentioned ice cream vans yet? I love to smile brightly at the vile crone who staffs the one near our local park in summer as I skip to tescos to buy a three pack of lollies, an egg sandwich and the paper all for less than one of their crappy whippy things. Up yours, Thatcher.
