The price of a Costa Coffee mince pie (and other eyebrow raising prices) !

Because I am fat and don't have a sweet tooth I never have anything to eat in a coffee shop so perhaps I'm very behind the times - but aibu to be shocked that they wanted £2.20 for a mince pie in Costa yesterday? They were flogging them at the till. I'm afraid I snorted at the idea I might want to pay that for 1 mince pie (and yes I know I'm sounding like my mother).

Any prices/charges that have made you do a double-take recently?

4 quid for a bag of Malteasers in Vue cinema.

Four fucking quid.

2 for a quid in cheap shops.

4 quid😡😲

formerbabe · 23/11/2018 10:44

I was in Primark recently and they had Harry potter chocolates by the till...one piece of wrapped chocolate about the size of a Cadburys Freddo. I thought I'd buy 2 for my dc...assumed they'd be either 50p or £1...they were £4 each! Shock I didn't buy them.

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 23/11/2018 11:04

I don’t live in the UK. A latte here is usually £1.50ish. I think the most I’ve paid is £2.50. But you don’t get a bucketful like you do in Starbucks! Croissants are usually £1. I get a shock when two hot drinks and 2 croissants is under £5!

Anything in Lululemon. A nylon zip up top for £100. Nicer ones on Amazon for £20.

Who are the people who shop in there and how can we develop a special stupidity surcharge just for them ? It could help fund the NHS.

The NHS is overpriced as well, when I buy my lunch it’s usually about £4 for a sarnie/baguette.
Fair enough it’s made as you want, but it’s too much for every week let alone everyday so I bring my own.

I feel for patients who are there all week for treatment.

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 23/11/2018 11:18

Oh and a small salad (about size of small cereal bowl) is £3.50.
For about 20p worth of lettuce!

CryptoFascist · 23/11/2018 11:57

@littlemeitslyn

They don't allow swearing on netmums, perhaps you'd be happier with the posting style over there?

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2018 12:00

@Cheesymonster the costa express machines are cheaper than barista coffee. (And smaller)

thaegumathteth · 23/11/2018 12:08

I keep seeing signs for ‘stocking fillers’ both in store and online. Frequently the ‘stocking fillers’ are £30. That’s not a stocking filler.

Donthugmeimscared · 23/11/2018 12:32

I am always anti the extra 50p to go large on a tea as you are technically paying for extra hot water.

I also raise an eyebrow at things that say gifts for random family members like tvs or ipads etc. Makes my crappy box of smaller to my uncle look a bit sad

i SAW THEM TOO! £4.00 for a crappy (kinnerton probably) chocolate

I think Yankee is so over-priced too

Oh and i love Jerky and biltong to snack on after the gym but its sooooo expensive too xx

AJPTaylor · 23/11/2018 12:52

I have spent the last 3 weeks visiting various hospitals after dmum was diagnosed with urgent heart problems. So I would like to say Hospital parking.
Day 1 I went to exit the car park after 5 hours. The tenner I had wasn't enough. I can't bring myself to add up what I have spent in general but it is eyewatering.

abacucat · 23/11/2018 13:18

Yes hospital parking!! DP was in hospital as an emergency earlier in the year. He is self employed, so no earnings, plus expensive car parking. I was told by a friend it was reasonable as DP wasn't having to pay for food!! The food was crap by the way, but DP ate it as he knew he needed to eat to get better. But most of the time chose a sandwich as the option.

Ladygodivasroom · 23/11/2018 13:28

Hospital parking is a bloody liability. Does the money even go to the NHS? I'm kind of assuming it'll be some PFI buggeration.

I live in a tourist town where most cafés charge around £7 for a sandwich. A fucking sandwich! It's two bits of bread and a fucking filling. Oh yeah and maybe a couple of crisps or a bit of rocket but seven English pounds. We hardly ever have lunch out.

Cuzcothellama · 23/11/2018 13:41

£1.50 for a babyccino in my local garden centre! Shock

WhoisyourDaddyandwhatdoeshedo · 23/11/2018 13:45

£1.50 for a bit of frothy milk?

Chouetted · 23/11/2018 13:45

@Ladygodivasroom Is it a different price if you pay in Scottish pounds? Grin

AdamNichol · 23/11/2018 13:50

Babyccino is normally free!!!!!

There's an artisan bread place around the corner from work. They do a cardamon version of a cinnamon swirl, so I had an eyeball at their sandwiches. Some round focaccia things for £3.50 and some half panini types; so I plucked for one of those. Yeah, they'd be £8 each. Palma ham, rocket, aoili type stuff. £8. Eight. Half a panini. Did I mention half?

CassandraCross · 23/11/2018 13:58

Lunch deal at a local hotel, it was £5.99 and very good value, good options and portions, however, a pot of tea for one was £2.50Shock damn near half the price of the food!!

Was surprised when in Spain recently that a cup of really decent coffee at any cafe was never more than Euro 1.70 and tea, although somewhat hit and miss, was between Euro 1.10 and 1.50

florriepeck · 23/11/2018 14:06

Bus fares!
On holiday on the Yorkshire coast this year, we went on the bus for just a couple of stops, as our elderly dog could walk no further.
I had two pound coins ready in my hand, thinking they would give me the change.
It was £5.20 for me and DH, and we were only on the bus for a few minutes.
Fair enough, I hadn't been on a bus since about 1987, but I came over all Mrs Brady, Old Lady with the shock.

CassandraCross · 23/11/2018 14:11

The price of sweets and popcorn in cinemas, it is beyond ridiculous.

BareBelliedSneetch · 23/11/2018 14:12

This is why I like supermarket cafes. (If I don’t know any nice indies nearby).

Sainsbury’s mug of tea is £1. And a mince pie is currently 50p with any hot drink.

Unfortunately our nearest supermarket is Tesco. And their cafe is a Costa 🙄

MrsPatmore · 23/11/2018 14:14

I'm always shocked at bus prices when I go anywhere outside of London. To take me and three kids into town is £10! All kids free in London and two journeys for about £1.50 for adults.

MrsPatmore · 23/11/2018 14:15

I also find wine in pubs a rip off - I buy one small glass then top up with a small bottle I have in my bag.

User1983 · 23/11/2018 14:17

Just been into Gap and have seen a lovely fleecy pyjama hoody...so like a hooded robe but short. £59.95!!! Not worth it even with 50% off Black Friday.
