Disappointing. Not very Christmassy at all. 👎☹️

EmmaStone · 15/11/2018 10:15

Does EJ really need the promotion? It's a beautiful song, but what has Elton's life got to do with John Lewis and Christmas?

Do JL actually sell pianos?!?

EmmaStone · 15/11/2018 10:16

Oh. They do [weep]

They sell digital pianos.

LucilleBluth · 15/11/2018 10:24

I think that no matter what JL do now people won't be happy, they've set the bar too high. People were moaning last year.

I loved it. EJ is getting on, he was a huge British export, to go back through his life to the moment of the first tinkle on a piano is a lovely idea. I agree with the poster who said that people are taking it literally. It's not about buying a big gift it's about a gift that could trigger something amazing.

FortniteIsTheNewCrack · 15/11/2018 10:29

Well I loved it and cried but I cry if I see a random kitten out of the corner of my eye so...Smile

One of my favourite songs and how nice it is to see a song being done by the original singer not an awful cover version.

FortniteIsTheNewCrack · 15/11/2018 10:29

That last comment makes me sound a trifle...elderly Grin

I agree Lucille. I think whatever JL do now people will have a go. People gave moaned for the last 3 years.

My favourite JL ad was the one where the boy was counting down the days to Xmas on the calendar. People assumed it was because he wanted his presents but really he couldn't wait to give his mum and Dad his own gift.
People moaned about that too.

I love the Sainsbury's ad too this year. Really fun, and the plug is ACE.

JL did a similar children's 'Show' theme to launch there new brand with Waitrose. People hated it.

I think JL can't win whatever they do. I also think people like to be the first to condemn. Twitter us rife with it. Although about 50% love it.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 15/11/2018 10:32

I am clearly conditioned now because from the very first note the tears came. I hate myself for it.

(In my defence, I've had a bereavement this year so it doesn't take much to set me off at the moment!)

KlutzyDraconequus · 15/11/2018 10:35

The John Lewis Partnership made more than 1,800 people redundant in the year to the end of June, nearly three times the level in the previous year, as it cut costs amid a profits slump.

Makes me wonder how many people JL could have continued to employ so they could have as better Xmas instead of handing Elton £5million for half a day sat at a piano.

SassitudeandSparkle · 15/11/2018 10:35

I've already said on another thread about this that I don't feel it's Christmassy and that he didn't speak to his mum for years. It's a good advert about what a gift can do (although I'm not sure if he did get a gift of a piano IRL) but it's not Christmassy.

Agree that Monty the Penguin is the best, just watched it again and got a tear in my eye.

I also love the British Airways bears from a few years back - seeing the passage of time on that always gets me. They've made a new one this year I think.

ReverseTheFerret · 15/11/2018 10:38

I loved the Buster the Boxer one and I love love love how evil Aldi are being with the carrots this year - they've pissed off all the Coca Cola truck fans and the social media response was hilarious and then the evil parsnip.

ShotsFired · 15/11/2018 10:39

People are crying over the ad? Really? Crying?

That's more confusing the the advert itself.

Gonzoo · 15/11/2018 10:44

I like it. Not as much as Mog but Mog is hard to top.

flissfloss65 · 15/11/2018 10:49

I like the sentiment of the ad and feel they didn’t need to have a big celebrity to pull it off.

As it is it is a fantastic ad for EJ.

spiderlight · 15/11/2018 10:54

I'm quite glad it's not flogging a cuddly toy that will create a massive scrum followed by weeks of eBay profiteering (never did get my hare :( ). It's not ragingly Christmassy but I quite liked it.

Sallystyle · 15/11/2018 11:24

I don't like it. I usually love them, but not this one.

Dumela · 15/11/2018 11:35

It is all about ELTON, which, although I like him, does not relate to many people especially kids.!

GingerbreadBlob · 15/11/2018 11:55

Oooh that gave me goosebumps.

Not very Christmassy and Elton and his mum had a tough relationship with his mum. They didn't speak for years, towards the end of her life.

I like Elton, he knows he's a diva and owns it. They made up a couple of years before her death.

This seems like a retrospective tribute to her.

fannyfanackerpants71 · 15/11/2018 16:09

I love it! Then again, I am Watford girl! John Lewis
incorporates into their add the one thing more camper than xmas... ! Love Elton and particularly love that song. Love it!!! Brilliant!

HelenaDove · 15/11/2018 16:24

Not seen this yet but my fave ads are the JL penguin one the JL snowman one. The Sainsburys Mog the cat one from 3 years ago and i love the Aldi ones with the carrot family which they have been running for a few years now.

JL should have kept the snowman couple and had a different scenario with them every year IMO.

Aldi have won Christmas ad wise this year IMO.

Horsemad · 15/11/2018 19:47

I like the JL one, it's poignant. My fave this year is Sainsbury's, love it! Grin

MissEliza · 16/11/2018 11:45

I'm gobsmacked that someone in JL chose EJ for this. It's well known he didn't speak to her for over a decade and they were only just 'reconciled'. Perhaps he had his reasons but it's really hypocritical of him to include his dm in the ad. How many Christmases did she spend without seeing her ds and dgcs?

Partridgeamongstthepigeons · 16/11/2018 12:01

I'm a musician. I loved it. Please buy instruments for Christmas (and lessons!). I still remember getting a treble recorder for a Christmas present when I was 8. I treasured it. 5 years later it was an oboe. I now play in 4 orchestras and have done continuously since my teen years. Well done John Lewis!Smile
