It’s a no from me. Misses the Christmas mark completely.

I think it’s lovely, as an advert for Elton John.

longwayoff · 15/11/2018 08:17

If you are my next door neighbour please don't buy a piano. Even little Eltons need to learn and practice.

Singerleon · 15/11/2018 08:20

Well I cried but I’m pregnant so doesn’t take much ...

What did you think @eloliphant Iv just been and watched it again, the plug makes it for me 😂😂

TheCupboardUnderTheStairs · 15/11/2018 08:31

I read the advert cost £7m to make of which £5m went to Elton.

I haven't seen it, but this was my question. 'He made a donation' pfft, a tenner probably.

It'll be a good Christmas in the Elton Household at least!

JaiNotJay · 15/11/2018 08:33

It's a lovely advert for Elton John but to me it doesn't say Christmas and it doesn't say John Lewis. I'm a bit disappointed that this is the best they could come up with. I like the Sainsbury's ad much more.

LadyR77 · 15/11/2018 09:03

It's just a trailer for the Rocket Man film to me - not Christmassy, just dull.

Rosehip10 · 15/11/2018 09:05

Shit.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 15/11/2018 09:07

It’s whack, Sainsburys are definitely the best this year.

errorofjudgement · 15/11/2018 09:08

I’d mike to see the Sainsbury’s one from 2014 brought back with the soldiers in the First World War sharing gifts on Christmas Day

AnnabelleLecter · 15/11/2018 09:10

I like the song but the rest was very disappointing.
I want it full of animals and cute kids and hope and very Christmassy.
That wasn't good enough.
It was an advert for Elton promotion.

VisitorsEntrance · 15/11/2018 09:10

It doesn’t say Christmas or John Lewis to me.
Also it doesn’t show anything that JL actually sell.

tinstar · 15/11/2018 09:16

Just watched the Sainsbury's ad again on the link errorofjudgement provided and I can hardly see through my tears.

A bloated multi-millionaire popstar at a piano ..... no comparison.

I'm not that keen on Elton tbh and I much prefer the message of the little boy giving to his mum. This advert says to me 'shouldn't you be buying an expensive big ticket item for Christmas or you're fucking your child's future'. Which is out of sync with the general mood of the country which is moving more towards not spending what you can't afford. Elton John is basically a symbol for spending to excess.

Next year I think they should do an eco themed advert encouraging people to buy memory making gifts for Christmas, or crafts, they can supply all of that, and it could be voiced by David Attenborough.

Jemimafuckinpuddleduck · 15/11/2018 09:23

I cried like a baby...

My nearly 12 year old had a 2nd hand piano smuggled in by many, MANY (these things are heavy!!) Elves on Christmas Eve and woke up to it on her 7th Christmas morning and her little face was priceless...

She does have a love hate relationship with it and I have definitely been that encouraging nod at a performance and the grouchy nagging moan just before an exam, but with her just about to sit her G4 I’m immensely proud of her and so it all resonated on such a deep level for me!!

I also think In a world where people are so much more aware effect plastic and greed has on our world and children JL has very cleverly not made another advert about stuff and rather the gift of presence and time invested in your children...

Bravo JL you did great and made my day!!

bobstersmum · 15/11/2018 09:37

It made me cry I think it was really good, and I'm not a fan of Elton or anything, it was lovely.

ree348 · 15/11/2018 09:38

I love this ad! John Lewis always do great Xmas ones.

QueenOfIce · 15/11/2018 09:41

I have no idea how this relates to Christmas. I feel JL have lost their way a bit trying too hard to be deep and meaningful. Personally I thought it was a load of crap.

AlexanderHamilton · 15/11/2018 09:42

It made me a little teary but I have an autistic ds for whom discovering music and the piano has transformed his life. An ex student of dh's wa also sponsored through music college by Elton John who took a very hands on approach)

(Ds auditioned for Rocket Man but didn't cope well with the group workshop aspect of the first round)

eloliphant · 15/11/2018 09:42

@greyspottedgoose I loved it! Loved the plug jumping in to the socket Grin the little girls dressed as a bauble and a star were adorable and now I'm all emotional!

coffeeagogo · 15/11/2018 09:45

I was expecting to hate it but it made me cry - damn.....

SaveKevin · 15/11/2018 09:45

That little boys face is delightful and did tear me up.
But Elton seems an unnecessary addition to the advert

SaveKevin · 15/11/2018 09:47

I love the Sainsbury’s ad. The plug was bloody hilarious.
Well done sainsburys

CheeseTheDay · 15/11/2018 09:57

I understand the meaning of the advert, how a gift can have a lifelong effect on your child, and that's very sweet, and very John Lewis. Could have been a bit, okay a lot more Christmassy though.
