Didn't like it all all. I get the sentimentality of it but I've no desire to feel sentimental over Elton John. I'm guessing he's got the double whammy of being paid handsomely for the ad (unless he's donated his fee) & advertising his new film which is out next year. I'm assuming the flashback clips were of Taron Egerton playing him in Rocketman. I'm guessing they don't have the merchandise to go along side the ad (don't fancy a cuddly Elton) & do JL even sell pianos? It's a 0 from me!

FiveNightsAtMummys · 15/11/2018 07:36

I liked it

4forkssake · 15/11/2018 07:38

Actually it's different actors playing him so not a clip of his new film, but it still seems like a heavy plug for it.

@4forkssake haha a cuddly Elton!

@namechangedyetagain I'm sorry to hear that 😔

@DoveSecret Apparently he has a film coming out!

@greyspottedgoose Agreed! I haven't seen the Sainsburys one yet I'm off to watch it now. M+S' ad wasn't that great ether

@4forkssake initially I thought I was watching an advert for his film that was playing before watching the JL video then I realised that was the ad!

Well I just died crying - that's me and Dh's song SmileSmileSmile lovely, lovely tribute

BadgersBiggestFan · 15/11/2018 07:45

Love Elton but am not overly impressed with this on first watch.
It’s not really Christmassy at all and does this mean it’s going to have a sleb in it every year now?

I think JL peaked already.

tinstar · 15/11/2018 07:48

Oh what a let down.

Have loved EJ all my life since Rocket Man was released. My youngest, piano playing dc has lust left his teens. I'm predisposed to loving a JL. So I ought to be moved by this one - but I'm not!

One of the things I miss about Xmas with small dcs is reading the beautifully illustrated xmassy books with them. JL ads always gave me the same warm fuzzy feeling. But not this one.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/11/2018 07:48

It tugs on my heart strings because sometimes a gift is life changing - like Elton's piano. That's Christmassy

My grandmother bought me a gift once that was life changing

errorofjudgement · 15/11/2018 07:50

I read the advert cost £7m to make of which £5m went to Elton.
It does say he made a generous donation to the charity he set up....
Personally I think if he’s going to spin this as a charitable idea his fee should’ve been paid direct to the charity of his choice.

Theknacktoflying · 15/11/2018 07:52

Eh ...

  • upright pianos are all over our freecycle pages - no-one has room for one
  • EJ is not the first person who would come to mind to be the poster boy for a middle class department store - he has a well documented problem with being a bit of a shopaholic and he has spent ££££ in the high courts keeping his husband’s sex life out of the media ...

Perhaps next year Winona Ryder might be free ...

MawkishTwaddle · 15/11/2018 07:56

'Buy your child a present that will turn his life into a media circus and lead to him developing a monstrous ego and a life-threatening coke habit!'

'No, you're alright, thanks.'

Couldn't they have picked someone for the ad who handled it all a bit better?

Jamie Cullum?
Bobby Crush? Grin

Trampire · 15/11/2018 07:57

Well I love it.

Imam old fart and my kids are getting older. I also lost my beloved dad last year so maybe I'm just melancholy about time passing.....

It's not about Elton John ( well it is but stay with me...) it's about giving a gift could spark a lifelong talent. A 'gift'

I think that's lovely. Some people are so limiter always and can't see past "Elton John???"

WhoisyourDaddyandwhatdoeshedo · 15/11/2018 07:58

the Jhon Lewis (2012) snowman was the one for me, I adore the Version of "the power of love" by Gabrielle Aplin. It really makes me tear up. I want it as i walk up the isle when I get married xx

Trampire · 15/11/2018 07:58

Limter= literal.

ThreeGlasses · 15/11/2018 07:59

Nope nope nope

Missed the mark here and we love JL advert day. I watched it without the kids and then showed them. They weren't impressed at all.

StylishMummy · 15/11/2018 08:00

I love it, and it's not promoting useless tat either, the idea being that you consider what you buy your children now as it may help to shape their future lives and career. They could have used any famous musician but Elton and the piano is iconic. I love it!!

cjt110 · 15/11/2018 08:02

Hmmm. Didn't really feel Christmassy to me.. but a lovely tribute to his Mum who he lost this year

4forkssake · 15/11/2018 08:02

Just looked to see what the merchandise is to go with the a. So far it appears to be Yamaha keyboards, Elton John T-shirt's, cd's & tour merchandise. So just another cash cow for Elton!

peanut2017 · 15/11/2018 08:03

Not doing it for me unfortunately. Didn't give me that nice Christmas feeling

tinstar · 15/11/2018 08:04

but a lovely tribute to his Mum who he lost this year

Wasn't he estranged from her for many years?

bookmum08 · 15/11/2018 08:06

I haven't seen it but I should imagine it's the same as all the ones from the last few years.... as in it gives me know clue as to what John Lewis actually sells. John Lewis is a department store so you generally find them based in cities so for a vast amount of the population it isn't a shop you regularly pop in to. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to travel to a specific retailer if I have no clue what they sell.

Birrdy · 15/11/2018 08:09

I really love it but it's not Christmassy enough. Just a tree in the corner at the beginning and end.

GoldenBuns · 15/11/2018 08:10

Made me cry. Sitting here sniffling now - and I don't even particularly like Elton John.

OzzyMadBat · 15/11/2018 08:10

I loved it and found it surprisingly moving even though I knew what was coming.
