I’ve just been listening to Disturbeds version of Sound of Silence and I have to say I honestly love it more than the original, it nearly brought me to tears this evening and I find it so emotional, however I can’t really think of any other songs where the cover is better than the original, so is there any songs you love more than the original version?

Frankie Miller's version of Jealous Guy & Janis Joplin's version of Me & Bobby McGee

I'm still undecided but love this version of Wicked Game - Ursine Vulpine ft Anacca

Jeff Buckley singing hallelujah. And I'm a massive Leonard Cohen fan. He just brings something to the song (maybe his youth?) That Leonard does not. Having said that L C version is pretty fantastic too

With a Little Help from My Friends - Joe Cocker

Deftones version of Duran Duran's The Chauffer. Quite a faithful version until the heavy guitars kick in and it takes on a whole new life. Magical. Marilyn Manson does good covers of 80"s songs. Have heard some horrible covers recently. Usually in shops. Puts me right off shopping.

thebigmaniswatching · 13/11/2018 18:33

user1471453601 totally agree on that one!

The first time ever I saw your face by Roberta Flack is wonderful and the version everyone knows. The original by Euan McColl is dire. He detested all cover versions of it.

I love Elvis Costello's version of She, but maybe that's because Charles Aznavour's one is naff -and yes I also thought so in the 70s; I was astonished to hear EC's version and realise it was a lovely song.

Johnny Cash's version of If You Could Read My Mind is fab, but so
are most covers by him.

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Do Love Sound of silence by Disturbed

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2018 18:36

I love Duran Duran's Perfect Day. Also Boy George's Crying Game.

Tainted Love by soft cell is so much better than the one by Gloria Jones

CMOTDibbler · 13/11/2018 18:40

Johnny Cash's Hurt is just amazing. I like the NiN original a lot, but JC pours a life of hurt, mistakes, and regret into that

RolyRocks · 13/11/2018 18:41

Alien Ant Farm’s Smooth Criminal

oatmilk4breakfast · 13/11/2018 18:42

Dear Theodosia from Hamilton - on the mixtape - check out the reprise version by Chance the Rapper. It blew me away - does every time

Singletomingle · 13/11/2018 18:42

I like Lordes version of Everybody wants to Rule the World and I've just discovered recently Lxandra covering U2's pride off the trailer for Man in the High Castle

ZackPizzazz · 13/11/2018 18:43

Birdy, Skinny Love.

NuttierThanSquirrelShit · 13/11/2018 18:43

Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind

DesperatelySeekingSnoozing · 13/11/2018 18:47

I was talking to DH about this the other day and Mariah Carey ticked a lot of better than the originals for me.

Her versions of:

I'll be there (young michael Jackson)
Without you (Nilsson)
Open arms (journey??)

We also prefer Mariah and Luther Vandross' version of Endless love to Diana Ross and Lionel Richie's.

Onthebrink87 · 13/11/2018 18:47

Nirvana's cover of man who sold the world (I'm shocked as I adore David bowie) and yes yes Jonny cash hurt!!

twattymctwatterson · 13/11/2018 18:47

I second The Futureheads version of Hounds of Love. It's amazing

Greensleeves · 13/11/2018 18:49

Pet Shop Boys - Always On my Mind
Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah
Guns n Roses - Knocking on Heaven's Door
Joan Baez - The Famous Blue Raincoat
Joan Baez - Suzanne

are covers I prefer to the originals

Onthebrink87 · 13/11/2018 18:52

OP have you heard the cover of the sound of silence by a woman called Nouela? Beautiful!

Clawdy · 13/11/2018 18:52

Another vote here for Janis Joplin's version of Me and Bobby McGee. It's the only one.

thebigmaniswatching · 13/11/2018 18:56

I’ve jst thought of two more

Whitney’s I Will Always Love You
Either George Michael or Adeles I Can’t Make You Love Me
