REALLY Panicking about new blue kitchen

Hi All, we are at the end of a pretty extensive build project. I have spent a year researching and organising my dream kitchen. I’m not usually very bold but wanted to try and be braver than my usual grey so opted for the vision a dark blue and white kitchen.
Was feeling really excited it all, even when it turned up..... but now they have started to install it really isn’t the colour I thought it would be and think it looks way too blue and overall a bit of a design disaster! We have literally spent a fortune on the house and have nothing left to improve anything else. My husband says he likes it (but he says that about everything) and now I’m in proper panic mode!!!
Anyone have any thoughts on whether I am over reacting or if I have made a terrible judgement, what I could do put it right??? Help! I’m really panicking and now feel gutted that rather than feel excited about showing off our new home, I am embarrassed about my design fail! 😫😩🙈

I think it's gorgeous!

Cambalamb · 10/11/2018 20:11

How does DIY compare to Howdens price wise?

Loopytiles · 10/11/2018 20:17

Grin at “my electrician told me it looks like a Smurf’s kitchen and clearly all the workmen are not a fan”

Our workmen were like this: couldn’t seem to reign in their inner Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen! Though unlike him they were pretty conservative in their tastes, they got snippy if we didn’t go with their colour recommendations!

It is gorgeous. I have kitchen envy.

manicmij · 10/11/2018 20:55

Who wouldn't love that. Colour is bold and more depth than the horrible shiny black that is/was fashionable. You are a very lucky lady. Something I dream of.

MyAuntyBadger · 10/11/2018 21:06

It's really lovely op. I'm at about the same stage as you - part way through installation, but ours is an off white kitchen. I'm looking at yours and now wish I'd chosen blue. I'll have to liven mine up with tiles etc. Another request for finished pics please.

Lindtnotlint · 10/11/2018 21:31

I cried when I saw my kitchen at this stage in its development... now it is done I LOVE it. Hold your horses and have confidence!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/11/2018 21:41

It looks fab op.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/11/2018 21:42

You can always paint the units if you decide you really don't like them.

GoAwayScaryVampire · 10/11/2018 21:45

I went for dark grey in what looks like an identical extension to yours... and I really wish I had gone for that blue!! I adore it.

PLINKY · 10/11/2018 23:39

Hey, your kitchen is so gorgeous! I thought it was Hague Blue in the beginning, but it looks a little different. Amtico herringbone in Oak sounds beautiful and copper tones will give you such a glamorous room. I agree with another comment that it looks modern and period at the same time. Well done for doing something so daring and exciting. Seriously don’t worry, you’ve made a great decision! 👏

1forAll74 · 11/11/2018 02:35

I should not be writing here really, but I don't like kitchens like this.. it looks too clinical, like a laboratory..and the most hated colour for me in a home, would be blue.. I have always been more into warm looking, countrified kitchens, although I can't say that now, as my kitchen is crap where I live. like think.very old terrace cottage, damp walls, and the odd slug on the floor . But it is surely great, that you have been able to design your kitchen. Stop worrying about it though, it will surely look super good when its all complete.

Leontine · 11/11/2018 04:53

It looks wonderful and I’m not even into blue!

SuzieCath · 11/11/2018 09:23

Personally not my taste but I think you need to relax and very greatful that you have such a lovely big space to work with. Sure it will all look great once finished.

Terf2Terf · 11/11/2018 09:54

I love your kitchen! Ours is a similar size and I went for cream doors and slate grey tops and floors but lots of stuff in it is dark blue, inc two huge sofas, and it's a fabulously warm and homely colour.

THIS is a smurf kitchen! (It's a retro display at DIY kitchens)

We have blue kitchen like yours ... Don't panic!
It's absolutely fab and gets lots of compliments..

YetAnotherSpartacus · 11/11/2018 10:54

I LOVE the Smurf kitchen!

ClaireAnne1976 · 11/11/2018 11:03

Relax, it’s fabulous and much better than a bland option. We just had a bold kitchen installed and love it. Half way through I also had a melt down. Have faith!

gamerwidow · 11/11/2018 11:07

All colours look at bit weird in bright sunlight. If you’re in the UK you won’t have that problem most of the time. I think it’s very striking not my choice but I’m boring and sticktl white and change the walls. As others have said that colour is just getting very fashionable and will be around for a long time.

Strawberry2017 · 11/11/2018 11:14

I absolutely love it! I want it! X

ElBelle · 11/11/2018 11:43

@EdWinchester yes I think that’s what I should have done. I fear it is expensive to get all that re painted/sprayed though. 😟 I felt very brave in planning but now they are here it feels like a lot of blue.

@Faffandahalf they were exactly the 2 we were choosing between. The kitchens are good (so our builder says) but there is a lot to think about. They do help to some extent but think they are now really popular (more so in london apparently) and so some of the extra help my friend had from them we didn’t get. You really need a good plan up front. We checked and checked and still got bits wrong, maybe where the panic started tbh.
I also picked a colour as you can get them both paintable, but in hindsight I would have got a stock colour maybe as you can’t return any of the bespoke stuff for obvious reasons.
My friend has Helmsley and Norton so we just went to hers instead 🙂 but when we were looking they didn’t have Helmsley in the showroom so call and check before you make the journey.

@Cambalamb similar price wise, really depends on which kitchen you go with. DIY just have so much more choice (a draw at the outset) and lots of them you can choose your own colour. We looked at Magnet, Howdens and Wren. Wren has lots of choice but quite a bad reputation for follow up etc. Howdens was the most competitive but more limited in ranges. They do paintable but you have to paint it yourself. DIY will spray it for you for not much extra.

@Suziecath you are totally right. We went from having a tiny galley kitchen to this space and I am very grateful for it. I think it’s just knowing that where as before if I didn’t like something that was someone else’s choice..... now any (expensive) mistakes are down to me.
I think it will be better once we actually move back in and can enjoy the space as a family. It’s too easy to obsess at a distance!

@1Forall74 I genuinely appreciate the honesty. I think that is the thing.... what I have picked is not for everyone. I just need to get my confidence around that as I usually just pick crowd pleasers!
