A few of you may have had a DH/DP since then. Wink

Not me, quite. But it struck me last night that my favourite fluffy Christy bath towel is now 20 yrs old.

So is a watch I wear every day that my parents bought me.

A couple of baking trays too.

They've stood the test of time.

Can you tell me what I need to add to my indestructible domestic list?

Many thanks.

We've still got the original Binatone 'pong' game which my dad bought in 1981.
The box is brilliant, there's a family on it dressed in 70s type clothes with the saying 'you can have tomorrow's world today'! '

We got it out a few months back and the kids absolutely loved playing it.

redfairy · 05/11/2018 07:04

I have the same second hand ironing board I was given at age 18. I am 51 now. Mind you, I don't iron much so I expect it will outlive me.

vampirethriller · 05/11/2018 07:07

All my teenage mix tapes (from the radio on a Sunday!)
A baking tray over 30 years old and used at least once a week, that was my grans
A 1960s Pyrex dinner set in daily use, also grans.

TheCatWhisperer · 05/11/2018 07:09

My Technics stereo is 27 years old! I can even plug my phone into it for Spotify. The French press I use to make my coffee every morning is over 40 years old and good as new. Both items used daily. I hate today's throwaway culture assisted by manufacturers ensuring nothing lasts too long.

ShatnersBassoon · 05/11/2018 07:16

My pans - just regular stainless steel ones that I took to university.
Towel - the one I use for my hair is the one I took on Brownie pack holiday Grin
Socks - I still wear a pair I bought when I was 16.

EscapeToTheMoon · 05/11/2018 07:17

oldest thing i have is my tumble dryer at 17. Plus loads of bathtowels which i bought when Dd who is 16 was a baby as “baby wanted white towels of its own”. Nice shade of grey by nowz

newmumwithquestions · 05/11/2018 07:23

I have an Adidas bag that used to be my dads when he was at university. He’s early 70’s!

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 05/11/2018 07:25

DPs teddy! It still works, as in comforts our children. When they are poorly, DP always says would you like to look after teddy's name tonight. They always love it. However, DPs face if they play to rough with it is quite a picture!

I also have a microwave around 25 years old!

BillywigSting · 05/11/2018 07:34

A few bits of furniture, a leather jacket that used to belong to my dad, a few peices of bakeware and crockery (mixing bowls, jugs, pyrex dishes and a cut glass trifle bowl etc)

A cassette Walkman and vinyl turntable and a mini cd player.

Quite a few bits of jewellery.

Eiderdown duvet that was my nanas and is lovely and warm and heavy and crinkly.

Buckets of mecano that was my dad's (60 this year) then mine and now ds's. You can tell the oldest bits because they are actually pretty sharp around the edges

I’ve got a pair of socks circa 1997.

LuxuryWoman2018 · 05/11/2018 08:51

I’ve also got a Sony clock radio, it’s indestructable as it’s been sloshed so many times by spilt tea and water.
I just realised my tea/sugar jars are ancient, bought from Woolworths when I bought my first house.

GoldenMcOldie · 05/11/2018 08:56

Dualit toaster. Cost a fortune in 1999 (nearly 20 years old).

Brabantia Bottle opener we received as a wedding present in 1998.

Kazzyhoward · 05/11/2018 09:00

Wow, thinking about it, loads of stuff.

In my home office, I have a 1994 computer (running DOS for Lotus software!), combi telephone/fax machine, printer, all still in daily use and well over 20 years old.

I moved into my current home 21 years ago, and have loads of stuff we bought then, including a fridge/freezer, microwave, dryer, electric tin opener, food mixer, TV & Video(!), cook books, etc.

But probably the most used things of over 20 years old are clothes, both for myself and for OH. I'd say half the contents of our wardrobes are over 20 years old, as we just can't seem to find new stuff that we like or which fits. Today, I'm wearing a business suit I've had about 25 years and it's still going strong despite regular wear!

Kazzyhoward · 05/11/2018 09:07

I hate today's throwaway culture assisted by manufacturers ensuring nothing lasts too long.

Have to agree there. I have more stuff that's over 20 years old that has outlasted newer stuff bought more recently that's had to be thrown out. Not only electrical stuff, but mostly clothes - OH is still wearing M&S shirts that are over 20 years old which have lasted longer/better than Next shirts which seem to last a year or two at best.

myidentitymycrisis · 05/11/2018 09:16

A set of stainless steel pans from Argos 23 years ago. Used daily, seem to be indestructible

myidentitymycrisis · 05/11/2018 09:20

My dads shoe brushes from Ww2

BikeRunSki · 05/11/2018 09:24

Down jacket
Tent
Camping stove
Sleeping bag (has had a new zip)

Duvet (although now a spare)

tinofbeans · 05/11/2018 09:33

My trangia cooking stove. 1 is 22 years old, the other less than a week...

What do you own that works since 20 yrs ago??
PlainVanilla · 05/11/2018 09:52

Dishwasher, oven, hob, fridge-freezer. My saucepans are a bit older, one of them in 24 years old and looks as good as new.
Stereo is older than 20 years, more like 30 or so, but I don't use it any more.
I have a piano that is over 100 years old and still "works".

thetemptationofchocolate · 05/11/2018 09:52

The microwave in my kitchen is 35 years old. My regular oven is 21 years old.

ShatnersWig · 05/11/2018 09:54

OK, 19 years to be precise, but a proper stacking separates hi-fi system (well, the amp, speakers, twin tape deck, record player and CD recorder work, the CD player doesn't, but I can play through the CD recorder). Although I've uploaded 3/4 of my CDs to the cloud now and have put a gadget (£25 from Maplins) that makes the amplifier Bluetooth compatible, so I can just play music from my phone directly through the amp into the fucking shit hot speakers. All bought with a work bonus back in 1999. Money very well spent.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 05/11/2018 09:58

Magimix. Indestructible.

Ariela · 05/11/2018 10:02

For me, it'd be easier to say what ISN'T 20 years old and still working.
Of all our electrical appliances the only one replaced is our fridge. Rest are over 20 years old, Miele dishwasher, washing machine, Zannusi tumble drier. So we bought a Miele fridge.
We just this year replaced the 3 piece suite we bought secondhand in 1996 when we moved in. Our dining table is aGplan that was on its way to the tip in 1996 intercepted by us, chair seats recovered.
Still got my parents George hoover, that's got to be at least 30-35 years old.
Have got new TVs, phones and computers

wendywoopywoo222 · 05/11/2018 10:04

Washing machine. Fridge freezer. Virtually everything in my house is older than 20 years.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 05/11/2018 10:04

DH - well just about.
