We have four distraught dc. the police are still here. I don't know what to say to people. I don't know what to ask when they offer to help.

I’m so sorry. My husband was killed in a car crash nearly eleven months ago. What a truly horrible situation you are all in and my heart goes out to you and your family and his family.
Concentrate on getting through your next breath, accept help from any one who offers and go to your GP to get help and support for you and your children.
I am so terribly sorry.

Been here all too recently. I have to words of wisdom though as different circumstances and the way your family reacts is unique in every situation. The night after my husbands death though I dragged all our mattresses and bedding into our living room so we could watch a movie, listen to his fave songs, but more importantly just be together.

Bowerbird5 · 22/10/2018 19:45

So sorry to hear your news.
I would ask GP to visit actually. Mine certainly would in circumstances. the whole family needs support. Offers of help ask for a meal.If you have a freezer you can put some in so you don't have to think for a while. I have done this for friends and it was welcomed. Things like casserole as it can be reheated at any time. You might not feel like food but the teens might.

I would just say not to send them to school for a week or so as it is quite harrowing for them. I have supported children in school and really they don't take anything in and walk around in shock. Leave them with a trusted friend at your house if you need to go out to make arrangements.Let them be part of choosing something like music or a poem to be read. Don't be surprised if they break down in a few months time and use any services for bereaved children as they wont want to tell you in case they upset you.Children are often very protective of the remaining parent.
Later on get them to make a little book each as that does help. Photos, envelopes with special memories in. lots of good things in The Range/Hobbycraft.
Keeping you in my prayers.

@Knittinganewme That's a great suggestion for the OP, I didn't know that fund existed. Thanks for sharing the info.
