When we were younger apparently there were no trails behind planes. I’m not sure tbh.

I don't doubt that he saw fewer contrails when he was young .... because there were fewer planes flying around then.

I’m 50, my dad worked in aircraft engineering and I spent my childhood gazing up at planes and their trails while dad explained engines and flight.
There were definitely con trails in the early 70s.

(slightly off subject) remember watching a (very bad) medieval nights & castle film & they rode up to the castle & the camera panned upward & you could see this jet trail over the castle - hilarious! It was a 1950's film so they had jet trails then (Obviously not 1050! :) )

That's not quite right Midge. They can under certain conditions persist and form cirrus cloud. That can block heat from radiating from the earth which probably has its greatest impact at night because cirrus clouds are strong blockers of IR but have some reflecting impact of visible light, so can reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the earth in the first place.
