Please can you help my DD?

I have name changed because I might show DD this thread.

DD is 10. Since she was a baby she has had a much loved teddy. Currently she sleeps with it and will cuddle it if she is upset. It stays in her bedroom.

Recently she has become convinced that she should not have teddy any more. She thinks others would say it is babyish to still have a teddy.

What do you think? Is it OK for a 10 year old to have a teddy at night? What age should she give it up?

My very cool 13 year old DD still has her husky

bellinisurge · 03/10/2018 20:21

Your teddy knows your story better than even your parents. No age limit.

crashingthunderandlove · 03/10/2018 20:21

I have a teddy that I hold up to my face and smell when I'm very tired or need comfort. I'm 38 and have no intention of retiring him yet!

I am over 60 and Pinky ( the pink dog) still lives on the bedside table. Too fragile to be in the bed- he is stuffed with straw! DS2 was worried last year when he could not find the Hedgehog ( given to him at my Mum's funeral) on his return to Uni. I had to post him- recorded! He also has a teddy at home
DS1 keeps the cat given at the same time on his bed or bedside table and a teddy and he is 25!

Mil (81 this week) always has her two teddies (gifts from DGC) sitting alongside her on her armchair. They are very dear to her and a reminder of how much she's loved.

BlueJava · 03/10/2018 20:23

My son is 16, he has Tigger! Tigger soft toys on his bed, Tigger mugs, Tigger socks...

PeonyTruffle · 03/10/2018 20:23

Still got mine and I'm 30.

My 4yr old has taken a shine to her and has been sneaking her into his bed with him which makes my heart happy!

Squidgee · 03/10/2018 20:23

I am 37, I still have 3 different toys that sit on my bed to the side of my pillow and I always hold one in my hand when i'm falling asleep.

One is Eeyore, Eeyore feels lovely and soft and its reassuring having him there.

MixedMaritalArts · 03/10/2018 20:24

Never to old for a furry friend, although my children adopted a tiny one of the same species in their backpacks for school trips. The imaginary herd of ponies were a tougher gig than the soft toys.

I’m 49. My Mum is 83. Love you Teddy sweetheart as much whenever you want

Please can you help my DD?
WickedGoodDoge · 03/10/2018 20:25

I only got Snuff, the Well Travelled Bear, when I was about 16, as a birthday present from my best friend! He’s still with me, though I have stopped taking him on holiday with me. Grin

MissConductUS · 03/10/2018 20:26

My 18 year old son took his Whinnie the Pooh Bear to uni with him this fall. It sits in an honored place on his desk, where it can keep on eye on him. Smile

Pro tip for new parents - always buy two or three identical teddies or pooh bears when you get your child one. Hide the backups for the day when the original goes missing or is damaged beyond repair. Don't count on being able to buy an identical replacement in the shops. They do make slight changes to them over time and your child will notice.

MissCharleyP · 03/10/2018 20:26

Had one in bed till my teens. Still have lots now, currently watching TV with me and DH on one sofa and my hippo, his sheep and Donkey Kong on the other one!

bluetrampolines · 03/10/2018 20:26

My brother is 38 and has fought in a war and works all over the world. My mum still hides his teddy because shes sure he'd need it again.

Theg00dwife · 03/10/2018 20:27

I had my teddy in my bed until DH moved in. I was 32😁

Justgivemesomepeace · 03/10/2018 20:28

My very cool 16 yr old dd has a Donald Duck that she's had since she was 3. Hes like one of the family.

MissCharleyP · 03/10/2018 20:28

PS - I’m 38, DH is 62.

perfectpanda · 03/10/2018 20:28

My 10 year old is still obsessed with her favourite animal. We've just bought a load of clothes for her best friends favourite toy for her 11th birthday. And she is currently making her a birthday card with a picture of both favourite animals on. It hasn't crossed their minds that they maybe should be growing out of it.. and long may that last!

IAmSproutycus · 03/10/2018 20:29

My 16 year old has just downgraded teddy to under his bed (although it got thrown under whenever friends came over for last two years). 12 year old very much has two best bunnies. They come on hols too.

MaryandMichael · 03/10/2018 20:30

I have the replacement bear I was given at the age of 10. I have my daughter's cuddly rhinoceros. I want the green cuddly triceratops currently on sale in Asda.
I'm 60 and three-quarters.
Snuggle that bear. You're never too old.

IAmSproutycus · 03/10/2018 20:31

Oh, and no need to give it up ever. Why do that to a dear friend? 😳

littlemisscomper · 03/10/2018 20:31

I'm 29 and Solomon tiger isn't going anywhere! He has one eye and his stuffing is so squished he's gone lopsided and his whiskers have rubbed off, but he's all mine forever and I wouldn't dream of parting with him!

WhenDoISleep · 03/10/2018 20:31

DS1 - nearly 10 - still has his (somewhat mangled) comforter toy from babyhood. It gets dropped merrily around the house during the day after he brings it down to snuggle on the sofa first thing in the morning, but at night he still wants it in bed.

I'm trying to encourage him to keep it a bit safer on a daily basis, as it is getting very much worse for wear, but have no intention of trying to get him to stop having it until he is ready. It comes away with us when we go on holiday, but when he is away with Cubs / school, he takes a larger version of it with him (original is animal + blanket, larger version is just the animal). In fact, the packing list for Cub and Scout camps includes a cuddly toy as a required item - everyone takes something and no-one is teased about having them, it is just accepted.

I still have 3 teddies from childhood, plus a lovely fluffly teddy my now DH gave me not long after we started dating nearly 20 years ago - they all sit is various places in our bedroom.

IceBearRocks · 03/10/2018 20:32

I still have my bear .... He's my Thunder Buddy!!! I'm 42 married with 3 kids xx

Orchiddingme · 03/10/2018 20:32

My 14 year old still has her Rabbit and Teddy on her bed. No need to give up EVER if you don't want to, it's tradition!
