As in tousled hair?

I thought I knew how to pronounce tousled, but my DP and friend say it differently.

Possible it's a regional thing I guess.

How do you pronounce it?

OP posts:

It's not a word that comes up very often, but it's tow-zuld isn't it? The 'ow' as in 'cow' ? Never heard there was another way, and a pp's links to online dictionaries seem to confirm that's correct.

BumDisease · 01/10/2018 01:18

Tow (cow) selled. I've never heard it your way OP!

HeAteAFatball · 01/10/2018 01:35

Isn't it tozzled?

PawneeParksDept · 01/10/2018 01:36

Tow-seld (NW)

PawneeParksDept · 01/10/2018 01:39

Never heard it pronounced any other way either, than tow, how odd

The one I find odd is those who pronounce tongue like curling tong and not tung which is obviously the " right"way.

brieandcrackers · 01/10/2018 02:45

I've never heard anyone say it any other way than tuss-uld (W. Mids) and now I'm questioning everything I've ever known.

PawneeParksDept I'm a guilty 'tong' pronouncer - not sure where I picked it up though as both my parents pronounce it correctly!! Possibly a Brummie thing in the same way that some of us say 'mom' instead of 'mum'.

HeAteAFatball · 01/10/2018 02:47

Pawnee I have never heard people pronouce tongue as tong- is that a NW thing?

I am in SW, but I think I just have been saying tousled wrong all these years. Blush

MakeItStopNeville · 01/10/2018 03:05

I pronounce it Tuss-uld. But then I only just learned how to pronounce Hypoerbole and I still think you’re all wrong.

MakeItStopNeville · 01/10/2018 03:05

Hyperbole obviously.....

EnidButton · 01/10/2018 03:06

Toss ulled

But I'm aware it's wrong. I thought it was supposed to be Tows ulled.

Tussled means having a physical fight doesn't it?

NW England

Bluesheep8 · 01/10/2018 05:57

Tussled but I've heard towselled.

Bluesheep8 · 01/10/2018 05:59

I'm wondering about a physical fight and messy hair though and if the pronunciation is different for each? I pronounce both tusselled....

MrsFezziwig · 01/10/2018 09:39

EnidButton, genuine question - if you know you’re pronouncing it wrong, why don’t you pronounce it right?

EggMayonnaise · 01/10/2018 09:43

Tow as in cow for me as well. Never heard it pronounced as tussled before.

Dowser · 01/10/2018 10:10

Tow.seld

ToeOfFrog · 01/10/2018 10:17

towzled

Vanillamanilla1 · 01/10/2018 10:20

Tow sulled - Essex

Ontopofthesunset · 01/10/2018 10:25

When I was a child and had only read the word in Enid Blyton type books, I thought it was pronounced 'tuzzled' but then I heard people saying it and realised it was 'tow-zuld'.

PeanutButterLips · 01/10/2018 10:36

I pronounce tow-sulled.
I've recently been using google when doing spelling with my son so he can hear the right pronunciation.
Google also says tow-sulled.
Just press the speaker icon when on google and it'll play the word.

How do you say tousled?
amusedbush · 01/10/2018 10:36

Tow-selled.

KathDayKnight50 · 01/10/2018 10:39

I say "TOW-SELLED"

which is how the Cambridge dictionary say it is pronounced both in the UK and the US.

Agentornika · 01/10/2018 10:47

Tow suld, I'm in Manchester. Tuss uld just sounds wrong

Doyoumind · 01/10/2018 10:51

Towsuld. It's definitely tow. Never thought or heard of it being any different. Have lived in both south and north.

CalonGlas · 01/10/2018 10:55

Towzld.
