How do you say tousled?

As in tousled hair?

I thought I knew how to pronounce tousled, but my DP and friend say it differently.

Possible it's a regional thing I guess.

How do you pronounce it?

Tow to rhyme with cow but was never really sure if that was right... Even had a convo with a friend once where we both wondered. Twas the days before smartphones and online dictionaries with pronunciation!

lostinjapan · 30/09/2018 22:35

Tows (rhyming with cows) - elled.

I’m in the south east. I didn’t realise there was any other way to say it.

starkid · 30/09/2018 22:43

I would say toss-ulled, but then again I have good form for pronouncing words very wrong when I've only read them and never heard them said out loud! I won't be able to change how I say it now though, so will just avoid it haha!

hmmwhatatodo · 30/09/2018 22:45

Toosled.

AfterSchoolWorry · 30/09/2018 22:48

GinIsIn · 30/09/2018 22:48

FrangipaniBlue · 30/09/2018 23:11

This thread has blown my mind Confused

moredoll · 30/09/2018 23:13

MamaRaisingBoys · 30/09/2018 23:15

Tussled

ElioElioElio · 30/09/2018 23:18

Towz-uhld

I'm originally from the southeast, but I don't think it's regional; I think it's just some people getting it wrong!

I’ve never heard anyone say anything other than tow-sulled (tow as in cow). This is quite a discovery. I’m from the midlands, have lived in the NW and London

SerenDippyEggs · 30/09/2018 23:20

Tuss- uld. Midlands!

6SpringCats · 30/09/2018 23:24

Tow sulled and also a Midlander 😀

AngeloMysterioso · 30/09/2018 23:26

To rhyme with house

PlatypusPie · 30/09/2018 23:32

Tow seld - London

Tousled is specific to hair.

Tussle is a different word, means a minor fight, not untidy hair ( though it might be a tussle to de tangle tousled hair !)

HMC2000 · 30/09/2018 23:38

Dictionary says tow as in cow. As pp have said, tussled is a different word with another meaning. I agree that mispronunciation comes from reading it rather than hearing it! Here you go (I love these things):

Sorry @Elio! I'm repeating you!

naivetyisthenewblack · 30/09/2018 23:49

I had no idea anyone said it differently!

Tow-sulled hair sounds wrong to me!

Tow to rhyme with cow - in my 39 years, never heard it pronounced a different way?! I'm in Surrey....

MrsFezziwig · 30/09/2018 23:59

I have never in my (long) life heard it pronounced other than tow-suld (as in cow) - I’m from the North of England.

Tussled is a completely different word (and meaning).

My pedantic nature is soothed by the fact that the dictionary agrees with me!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 01/10/2018 00:01

MrsFezziwig I was going to post the exact same thing, except I’m from down south!

PickAChew · 01/10/2018 00:01

Tussle.
