As in tousled hair?

I thought I knew how to pronounce tousled, but my DP and friend say it differently.

Possible it's a regional thing I guess.

How do you pronounce it?

Toozled, or maybe tou rhymes cow. Never heard tussled! I have always wondered though! I’m in Scotland.

PippilottaLongstocking · 30/09/2018 22:00

I’ve just discovered that I say it differently depending on context and I had no idea! I’d say ‘I tussled his hair’ but ‘he looked towseled’

I’d never had noticed I did that if it weren’t for this thread!

Aridane · 30/09/2018 22:02

Sulled, not sullied!

TOW AS IN COW

StripySocksAndDocs · 30/09/2018 22:02

Tuss uld (which I think is your way). Not noticed another version- suppose it's not up there as a high frequency word!!

I say toss-ld I think I probably just say it wrong!

Ohyesiam · 30/09/2018 22:05

Tow as in cow. London

mikado1 · 30/09/2018 22:06

I used to say tussled but that's a different word (yes I know I've also spelt it differently!), as in, the two girls tussled in the corridor. I think that's why it's often mispronounced as it sounds right and familiar. My sister picked me up on it v publicly and I bitterly disagreed..but she was right. However, you know what they say, don't make fun of people who mispronounce words, they've probably read them in books, and never heard them said. :)

BertieBotts · 30/09/2018 22:07

I don't think I've ever heard it said out loud, but I'd have guessed tows-eld.

hugoagogo · 30/09/2018 22:13

I am from Norfolk and have lived in Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Meet0nTheIedge · 30/09/2018 22:14

Tows-uld. Not a word you hear very often, but that's how I pronounce it in my head when I read it. SE England.

Welshmaiden85 · 30/09/2018 22:15

I say halfway between Tow-sl’d and Tas-l’d.

Friolero · 30/09/2018 22:16

Tow suld

I'm from the SE

IloveJudgeJudy · 30/09/2018 22:18

DH and I (born and bred SE) both say Tow (as in cow) z'ld with a z sound rather than an ess sound

AliciaMayEmory · 30/09/2018 22:18

I would say tousled as tow-sulled. The word tussel means something different.

Regingaphalange · 30/09/2018 22:18

I'm from Scotland and would pronounce it Tooseld

Helpmemyhairisterrible · 30/09/2018 22:21

Towsled. East Scotland. My DD's pet name is Toosie from the Scots for curly hair.
