Things you have tried due to MN and failed miserably at?

Am I the only one who has tried some stuff out due to MN threads and it turned out well not good?

Today getting ready I was thinking about a MN thread I read some time ago about drying in the shower or outside the shower. Usually I dry outside however the towel we usually have on the floor has been " replaced" (I am looking at you ds) with a normal towel and it was pretty wet.. So I figured I would try what MN post had suggested and dry inside the shower.

Currently nursing a bruise on left arm where I hit it into the folding door (it folds inwards so actually not a lot of room for drying I found) Ok I think stupid of you not to close the door. So I close the door and manage to scrape my left wrist on the door frame..

I will be drying myself outside the shower in the future.. More room

The Big Hair. Best hair dryer ever! I love mine just wish they weren't so expensive to replace

DinosApple · 30/09/2018 07:16

I bought a mooncup.

It pinged my cervix and got lodged. Took a half hour, more pinging and some blind panic to remove, then I had the shakes for hours afterwards. Binned!

batshite1 · 30/09/2018 07:49

Nellyelora
My mum has the Ikea high chair, I always trip over the bloody legs!

LuubyLuu · 30/09/2018 07:50

Likewise, a mooncup.

Just no.

batshite1 · 30/09/2018 07:55

Been wanting to try a mooncup but now...

Have the Lakeland dryer but unrelated to mumsnet however I am
a Zoflora fan thanks to mn.

exLtEveDallas · 30/09/2018 08:26

Detest Zoflora but that's not a MN thing, that's a "my mum using it on holiday and making me puke" thing.

Dishwasher vodka was my proudest moment on MN. I still do it every Christmas and for parties in the summer.

greeneyedlulu · 30/09/2018 08:32

Been doing the hair cut for a while now but found it on Google not here and it works but I'm thinking of going to a salon for something different.
Love zoflora linen fresh, the house smells great.
I fell for the Waitrose baby bum cream on your face joke but found that else where before I'd heard of mumsnet.
And cutting pizza with scissors is so much less fuss

cranberrymoon · 30/09/2018 09:07

Happy to sell my barely used Big Hair if anyone wants it.

millimat · 30/09/2018 09:11

Grin ooh yes the penis beaker thread! No I've not tried that.

I'm confused over the shower thing - why such a big fuss over getting dry?Confused
I bought zoflora and used it once.
Love my mooncup though - that was a life changer.

Italianmeringuebuttercream · 30/09/2018 09:13

I just discovered zoflora, it's great! Does cone in many different smells. Country garden and linen are my faves.

CosyLulu · 30/09/2018 09:19

Penis beaker Grin I tried to sell the idea to dh but he wasn’t having any of it.

Someone suggested using white wine vinegar to get the smell of vomit out of a sofa (dd had had an awful bug). God it was awful - vomit and vinegar. Had to get rid of the sofa.

Has anyone tried to snap and fart by any chance?

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/09/2018 09:21

I loved my Big Hair. DD1 has taken it off to uni though...

goldopals · 30/09/2018 10:14

I dry off in the shower. The walls and door don't reach the roof, so I just hang the towel over and grab it when I turn the shower off

PierreBezukov · 30/09/2018 10:35

Most MN tips have been brilliant - hands down the best was the moon cup. Totally life changing. Also do the half a dishwasher tablet per load to save money.

Worst - MN haircut. Embarrassed I even tried it. And the microwave cheese sauce seems like a terrible idea to me - so much faff when it's easy to make on the hob.

MrsMarigold · 30/09/2018 11:06

I like drying in the shower, we've always done it in my family, towel left on the floor by the door.

Heated airer useful in our cold house and for non tumble dryer stuff.

I got some jeans and bb cream I loved.

Hated the steam mop and lentils in bolognese

Canary123 · 30/09/2018 11:18

What's wrong with drying yourself outside the shower? What's the perk of drying inside the shower?

Sgtmajormummy · 30/09/2018 11:38

I made an eggy cake recommended on a MN thread as a game changer. As it coked it was supposed to separate into crust, cream and base.

No it didn’t. I’m a competent plain baker and it went against everything I know (from experience). It sort of half heartedly did none of those things and nobody could stomach it after one bite. What a waste of time, effort and ingredients.

But I have wholeheartedly embraced the Ninja T-shirt fold, Nuxe Rêve de Miel lip balm and 5-minute microwave jam (apricot is amazing).
I also inflicted the MN haircut on DD when she was small. Worked a treat on her wavy hair.

Sgtmajormummy · 30/09/2018 11:39

*cooked

Isleepinahedgefund · 30/09/2018 11:41

That Collection mascara recommended all over style and beauty a while back. Bloody awful - dried out my eyelashes before running all down my face over the course of the day.

I love my Lakeland airer. Can’t see the point of making a cheese sauce in the microwave, so easy to make on the hob - chuck in all the ingredients together, stir until it thickens, add the cheese and off you go,

As well as wondering if anyone has tried snapping and farting, im also wondering if anyone has tried bleaching their doors after reading about it on here?

TheMythicalChicken · 30/09/2018 11:41

cranberrymoon, please can I buy your Big Hair! Mine broke and they don’t sell them in my country.

DixieTrix · 30/09/2018 11:59

How do you do dishwasher vodka please ? I couldn't try it when it was a craze on MN as had no dishwasher then. Now I have and can't remember what you do !!

Reaa · 30/09/2018 12:03

I have always bleached my doors and skirting boards, have never seen it mentioned on here.

TheCrowFromBelow · 30/09/2018 12:04

Zoflora was a big fail here
Love the microwave sponge but to be fair my mum used to do it in the 80s I’d just forgotten about it
Love my Lakeland dryer
Underwhelmed by footer
Not sure I want to know what snapping and farting is Confused

Tartyflette · 30/09/2018 12:37

We have a large walk-in shower but I'm not sure what the benefit of drying yourself in it would be -- I'd still have to get out of it to fetch the heated towel off the heated towel rail and the bathroom is lovely and warm anyway after I've finished showering. Confused
Also I like the Babyliss Big Hair but I think it's mis-named, on my thick hair it works as a smoother/tamer rather than giving lots of volume.

As for the cheese sauce, I remember Delia showing how to make it by the all-in-one method in a pan. Dump all the ingredients in the pan except the cheese, slowly bring to the boil whisking all the time, add cheese after it has thickened. Simmer two minutes.
But 'Mumsnet Swears By' is a different kettle of fish. I'm a sucker for lots of stuff recommended on there, although I try to be am wary of covert advertising..... Grin
Among my purchases - Next relaxed skinny jeans (fine, a bit thin) F&F jeggings (very long in the leg) Freezyderm tinted moisturiser (weird silicone texture, jury's still out) and Nip and Fab Glycolic pads -- no visible difference whatsoever. (only bought when they were half price. )

exLtEveDallas · 30/09/2018 12:46

@DixieTrix

It's really easy. One 1ltr bottle of vodka, take out about 1/4 (and drink!)
500g boiled sweets or large bar of galaxy/dairy milk.

Things like Kola Cubes, Cough Candy, Rhubarb and Custard work really well. Skittles are good but anything with gelatin in leaves a 'scum' over the top that needs to be skimmed. Percy pigs were a nightmare (but tasted great). I really liked werthers and Murray mints. The chocolate is to die for but ridiculously potent because you will drink it neat.

Smash up the sweets as much as poss and add to the vodka bottle. Put the lid on and wrap some cling film around the top just in case. Lie on its side in the top shelf of the dishwasher and put through a normal 70 degree wash (with your dishes - it's fine).

Give it a good shake when it comes out of the washer then leave aside to cool.

Drink!

(If you want to drink it like a liqueur then put it in the freezer for a couple of hours, it goes really thick but doesn't freeze)
