Things you have tried due to MN and failed miserably at?

Am I the only one who has tried some stuff out due to MN threads and it turned out well not good?

Today getting ready I was thinking about a MN thread I read some time ago about drying in the shower or outside the shower. Usually I dry outside however the towel we usually have on the floor has been " replaced" (I am looking at you ds) with a normal towel and it was pretty wet.. So I figured I would try what MN post had suggested and dry inside the shower.

Currently nursing a bruise on left arm where I hit it into the folding door (it folds inwards so actually not a lot of room for drying I found) Ok I think stupid of you not to close the door. So I close the door and manage to scrape my left wrist on the door frame..

I will be drying myself outside the shower in the future.. More room

Ok, with the shower thing... how do you dry yourself in the shower? Where is your towel?

I would have to get out the shower to get my towel off the towel rail and then get back in?! Madness.

I can't think of anything I've actually tried because of Mumsnet, but I will say that oil cleansing works wonders on my dry skin! Unfortunately credit for that one has to go to my Wedding Make Up artist who told me to do it ;)

Getting rid of the toilet brush. Bought another one.

Ginkypig · 25/09/2018 11:39

What's the microwave cheese sauce?

SuperSange · 25/09/2018 13:28

YY; what's the cheese sauce?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 25/09/2018 14:12

The curly girl method isn’t a Mumsnet thing, it’s an actual thing! And it works for me so ner Grin

I bought a Babyliss Big Hair - didn’t like it. Sent it to someone on here actually.

Most other things I’ve tried have worked well for me. I can fold fitted sheets and everything Grin

FapandSnart · 25/09/2018 14:46

Lakeland airer - load of shit
Drying in shower - I do this now, it’s ace
Babyliss big hair - takes a while to get used to and did get my hair tangled a few times but I do like it now

Mumsnet microwave cheese sauce

INGREDIENTS
300ml milk
25g flour

25g butter
50g grated cheese

METHOD
Start with a Pyrex jug/bowl that can go in the microwave. It needs to
be quite big - 0.5 litre is a bit risky as the sauce may rise in the jug as
 it cooks.

Put milk in jug first, then add flour and butter.
Give it a very quick whisk before you start.

Heat for 1 minute in the microwave on high, whisk and put back in.

Repeat until it's had 4 minutes in the microwave in total. At that point, it will have thickened.

Then stir in grated cheese.

PerkingFaintly · 25/09/2018 15:55

Everlasting thanks to the original author but also apologies for not crediting them. They're my heroine, whoever they were.

I just copied and pasted it at the time and will KEEP IT FOREVER.

Xiaoxiong · 25/09/2018 15:57

You melt the butter in a jug in the microwave, then mix in flour and salt to make a paste and microwave 20 seconds. Then you add a small amount of milk and mix furiously till smooth , then add all the rest of the milk and cheese, mix again, microwave 30 seconds and whisk again. Done.

I actually have a shit microwave and a wonderful non-stick saucepan so use the stove now, but I know the microwave method works for people who often get lumpy cheese sauces or find it sticks unless they stir for ages.

Xiaoxiong · 25/09/2018 15:59

Ha Perking our methods are different!! I only did it twice, now I use the stovetop - I'll need to try yours now!

funmummy48 · 25/09/2018 16:04

I've been making microwave cheese sauce for 30 years but don't use butter! I put 1pint of milk in a large microwaves jug/bowl, then take about 3tbsp out and mix it with 2 healed tbsp of cornflour. I hear the large jug/bowl of milk in the microwave for 3 mins, then add in the cornflour/ milk mix and stir. It goes back in the microwave for 50 second bursts & stirs until it's thickened. Then I add the grated cheese and stir until it melts.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 25/09/2018 16:15

I had a microwave cookbook when I first moved out of home which featured microwave cheese sauce.. Melt butter, stir in flour, pour in milk then cook for 3-4 minutes whisking every 30 seconds until bubbling and thick, then stir in grated cheese. I made it like that for years!

Beacauseisaidso · 25/09/2018 16:26

Yep mn hair = disaster
Bbalm = much wasted time in Waitrose + spots
Babyliss thingy = mushroom head
Dishwasher tablet = mess but worked v well (need a lot of water)
Sure there must be loads of others ......

LaDameAuxLicornes · 25/09/2018 16:30

Cleaning the oven door with a dishwasher tablet. It shredded everywhere and made a huge mess without actually cleaning the door. eventually asked the cleaner to do the door as an extra, and now put it through the dishwasher regularly to ensure that it never ends up in the disgusting state it was in before.

On the other hand I love my All Saints leather jacket that I bought thanks to a thread on here, my Newtons foot sponge has saved me a small fortune in expensive pedicures, Ocado and my cordless vacuum are amazing, I like my (non-Lakeland) heated airer in the winter to deal with non-tumble-dryable stuff, Marie Kondo's book was indeed life-changing, I still store bedding inside a matching pillowslip, and cutting up pizza with scissors instead of a knife has been one of life's tinier but more pleasing revelations.

thebear1 · 25/09/2018 16:47

I love my Lakeland airer but zoflora is horrible stuff.

missmouse101 · 25/09/2018 16:53

Love Cocoa chocolate. Totally overrated!

Womaningreen · 25/09/2018 17:51

LaDame, you put your oven door in a dishwasher?

I wanted to like zoflora because it's a glass bottle!

I cut my own hair but it's curly so that's easy enough. I am not convinced by the method described here but I have layering scissors to shape the front.

Glad I'm not the only one to regret getting rid of the loo brush!

Winterlight · 25/09/2018 18:07

Bra intervention!

Wasted £60 on two bras, was like I was being cut in two when I breathed out.

Meet0nTheIedge · 25/09/2018 18:40

I wanted to like Zoflora too, in its tiny glass bottles, but it stinks.

00100001 · 25/09/2018 18:51

missmouse I agree! Moser Roth all the way for me

LaDameAuxLicornes · 25/09/2018 19:12

womaningreen just the glass! It slides out of the main door and is dishwasher safe.

IhatetheArchers · 25/09/2018 19:21

Ah yes, the mn haircut...
Also vegan banana pancakes, and vegan icecream. Not a pleasant experience.

Womaningreen · 25/09/2018 20:47

LaDame I wish mine did that!

I am tempted to try the microwave cheese sauce, I'm terrible at making it in a pan.

Trills · 25/09/2018 21:03

I have heard that the bottom butter was a wind-up, you know...

Grilledaubergines · 29/09/2018 17:38

I don’t get the point of if the micro cheese sauce. The method and timing is the same as making it in a pan, but without the risk of molten lava hitting the microwave ceiling.
